I installed Norton 2009 and I have noticed my computer was different. Now I cannot even get passed the startup screen.It is like its frozen,the on/off button at the front doesn't work,only the restart. When I click on my user account to log in, nothing at all happens.I am on my husbands laptop right now. It is an old computer,but can it just die like that?
View 4 RepliesSystem will not boot pass Dell welcome screen. Does not respond to F2/F12/F8 and this all began after i clear cmos. Original problem was BSOD so now i wish to do a clean install but unable to enter the bios to set PC to boot from CDrom. Got into safe mode once but it freezes. I piggy back the HD to another pc, did a virus/malware clean then defragged and clean the hd. Now i am ready for a fresh install but cannot get pass the dell screen. I tried 4 keyboards but still the same. The dell screen shows the F2=SETUP, f12 = Boot menu and Bios revision 1.0.10.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to fix a new hp computer. the problem is when you start it up and it goes to log onto windows it starts up the typical light blue screen but an hour glass just sits in the middle and it does nothing, you can move the mouse bbut nothing else. to be more decritive, it the welcome screeen listing the users name to log on but it doesnt get that far, right before that but it just stalls and does nothing.

She paid the $150 and instead of just plugging in the new product key she inserted the CD they mailed her and started a new install of windows. It seems it had trouble locating files and now she gets a option to select which operating system at start.The setup won't continue (it can't locate files on CD - maybe bad disk) and when she selects the original XP pro setup it won't let her past the login screen.

View 1 Replies View Relatedthe Windows Installer screen opens telling me it is trying to install a program that is already installed,(usually driver for HP 4110 printer drivers). If I don't cancel it immediately, eventually an error screen appears telling me the file I'm seeking is not available and to insert the installation CD. I've tried re-installing the drivers by inserting the CD, but then an error message appears saying the drivers are already installed. This is getting frustrating?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI first noticed a problem when a command prompt window popped up during startup.1.exe. After some searching I discovered it was a trojan located on c root directory. I decided to try and scan to remove it. I used Adaware and AVG free and didnt get it. (only found a few low risk tracking cookies) I then tried SpyBot but during the update process it decided it needed to install the new version so it went ahead and did this then informed me i needed to reboot. I selected not to right away. I scanned with System Mechanic to remove junk and obsolete files and got rid of them all. I then did a registry scan and deleted everything system mechanic found.
I then deleted the installation .exes and shortcuts that had been added to my desktop by Adaware and Spy bot.I also have zone alarm running all the time.When i came to restart my pc, it passes the windows XP main screen but then freezes on the Acer brand screen. It also will not boot into safe mode. I just get the normal safe mode screen but with the operating system details printed across the top and no start menu/input options etc.Ive removed and reseated the RAM and the battery.Im really stuck as to what to try next!Its an Acer Aspire laptop about 2 years old.Ive done something to kill it but nothing massively different to what i have done in the past.Im fairly good with these things but im feeling a little lost for ideas!

View 11 Replies View Relatedi rescently had to format the drive for a fresh copy. I have installed xp home retail version and realised i wanted to try something diferent. At system start the computer starts up prior to the windows boot screen and displays COMPAQ in big bright bold letters with option of F10 for system restore which is no longer on system (reformated) as well as other options for boot select pres ESC and F1 for setup.Can i remove this from my system? and then can i create a menu with 2 options 1 load windows normaly and 2 install a disk image stored on a hidden partition? maybe like the F10 key assighn that to access the imge and install it.
my friend loaded ABIT drivers for his motherboards ethernet port . after loading the driver he reset the computer and it loads til windows then turns blue and resets. his keyboard will not work so he cant load safe mode what should he do?

So I ran Windows XP repair and off the disc and it seemed to all work fine. When logging into my desktop, however, the mouse and keyboard now freeze up. I've tried last known configuration during boot, a BIOS hard drive test and still no go.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just cleaned out a slightly infection of spyware and viruses on this computer and everything looks nice a clean but unfortunately there seems to be some residual problems.My startup is much slower, the 'loading your personal settings' can take upwards of 2 minutes. But, it can by by-passed by hitting ctrl-alt-del. Once I get to the desktop I notice that Norton Anti-Virus is disabled and it stays disabled until the icons load which ALSO takes another 2-3 minutes. I can open programs and they run fine but I am unable select anything on the desktop or right click on it.
I've never had slowdown like this on here before. It also only seems to be happening on this one windows account, the other ones load up much faster. I've cleaned it the best I can running all the normal apps and some other cleaners. Even tried restoring the desktop back to the windows xp default appearance.
i looked through the folders and files in windows [xp pro] and notice some of them were created in 2009, any ideas why? everything seems to be running ok

I think that I have a virus which is stopping me from 1) Installing Norton Internet Security 2005 properly, and 2) Stopping me from accessing all anti-virus related sites, for example - www.symantec.com, ww.grisoft.com, www.pandasoftware.com, and when i tried to download AVG 6.0 from another site which was unrelated to antivirus, I found that I could access the site but the download failed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIve just installed a new motherboard and cpu but are now having issues getting going. The cpu is a AMD 3700 939 single core.The MOBO is a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939.
I have 1 gig of ram running on single channel and have tried swapping them out and moving them around with no success.I have a X850XT graphics card installed.
If i try and boot with the existing os on the harddrive it just keeps going through the boot cycle over and over.If i try and run the XP setup it locks up where it says Setup is Starting windows at the bottom left of the screen.
If i run Knoppix from cd all is good and i can get going and explore my harddrive etc.
I finally got sp2 installed and most things seem to be working ok. I had a problem with Nikon Capture software but got that resolved with Nikon tech last night. Now the only thing left that is bugging me is after boot up it goes to a black screen and hangs for about a minute, then goes to a black screen with a black and white progress bar across the bottom of screen and it takes about 2 minutes before it goes to the windows startup screen and boots up normally from there. I have been to Microsoft support site and looked thru the archives for this particular problem and can't find anything.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi don't know if this problem is hard ware or software, but here goes.my friend brought me a laptop that had a dark screen. this thing had lots more problems. it was running XP SP1. with an out dated 2005 norton AV. the first thing i did was put an external monitor on it. i was then able to see what was going on. i upgraded to SP3 and uninstalled Norton. i then installed AVG. ran a full scan. i installed spybot and adaware. ran both the only thing left is 3 instances of "wieldtangent" that i am not able to remove. i thought that the screen problem would go away, with the virus scan but it did not. when you boot the laptop you can see the splash screen, then it goes dark. (you have an image but it is not lite up) then about 1/2 way through the boot screen comes back on and then it goes out. then you are able to see the desktop and about 5 sec. later it goes dark again.
