View 1 Replies View RelatedThe my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

Now I cannot even get passed the startup screen.It is like its frozen,the on/off button at the front doesn't work,only the restart. This is the strangest thing I've seen in the past 10 years of using computers. I have an Acer Aspire 7535-5020 laptop that came with windows 7, but I'm very picky and I wanted Windows xp back so I went onto Acer's website and downloaded all of the windows xp drivers and then formatted the laptop to Windows XP with intergrated Service Pack 3.The computer works just fine except for one very strange oddity - the USB mouse I'm using only works when plugged into the first USB slot, it will refuse to work in the other 3 USB slots.I'm using a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 USB which is my favorite mouse and I have 3 of them at home. View 8 Replies View RelatedMy problem is is when I booted my comp up yesterday, norton comes up with some odd error about not being able to scan e-mail or instant messenger for viruses, and my internet on just this computer will not work. Now this happened with my other comp when the hard drive was failing. The computer will also at some reboots take forever to get into windows.Sometimes when I try to get into network connections or my computer, it will just hang or I get the flashlight icon scanning. I was able to back up most of my stuff, but when I tried to reformat, it kept saying to close all windows and I ended every program I could think of.I also tried a system restore to Saturday when it was working normal, but I have had no luck. Is it something with windows or is another HDD going? I'm thinking of just RMA'ing the HDD and do a whole new install. My only other option is to use a Linux Suse disk I have and boot from that and see if it works. Basically, it just sends an IM to anybody I'm talking to, saying check this out: and then a hyperlink. I don't know if this is the best place to come but its the only place I could find. I have the required system specs, but out of the 512 RAM on my pc (also the amount needed to run the game) the computer tells me only 265 is free, even when I am not running any programs. View 6 Replies View RelatedI just install SP2 the other day and there are a few fixes I need, I've gotten more of the compatitbility issue Number 1 is with Excel. When I open up any workbook it treats the left mouse button as pressed. So when I go to click on any cell is highlights it and tries to select an entire group. The only way for me to close the program is to use the taskmanager or right click the program on my start bar.Number 2 is WMP. Some video files I had don't play sound anymore and I have all the same codecs as before.

I am about to get rid of norton system works and would like to knowabout some alternatives.I have been using norton systemworks for years and also use AVG as asecondary virus checker.I have sourced some alternatives for most of the utilities i.e zone alarm, may try avast (instead of AVG), regclean.But what I will miss is the 'one button checkup' from norton that scans your system and detects any probs before fixing them. Is there any other free program that do this?If anyone has any other suggestions as to what alternatives to use (preferably free!) instead of Norton System works.
i put together a system the other day after my old one totally pooped out on me. i installed the hard drive from my old system into the new one as a second hard drive, and installed xp pro onto a different hard drive (primary master) in the new system.
how can i use all my old programs that are installed on the old hard drive without confusing the heck out of xp? many of the applications on the old hdd are confused when i run them, i am guessing because when they reference files in locations where they think they should be, but they are not finding them. i don't even have enough room on the primary master drive to install all the programs, its a very small drive. nor do i have enough room to fit xp onto the second hard drive.
A friend of mine in a craft site created a document in WORKS. There were problems for others on that site opening it that have WORD and not WORKS.
Is it necassay to have WORKS to receive WORKS files??
turn on my computer, nothing loads. internet explorer will not open any internet pages despite me being connected to the internet. all programs seem to freeze. ive tried everything, ive cleaned history cookies etc. and ran norton, ran anti spy. ive done it all. the only way i can get things going back to normal is if i system restore. something is obviously going wrong.

After the update I rebooted XP.When I logged into my account and started using my keyboard the mouse would not move, and the keyboard would stop working. I would even push the caps lock or num lock keys to see if the indicator lights wold turn on/off, No. I have to use the on-screen keyboard to type.

It does same with safe mode.I'm not sure, but I think it is caused by display driver I tryied to install. I got a nVidia 8600GT-m card, and nVidia doesn't provide official driver for it, it must come from the vendor or I need to use modified driver. I had to reset the computer and after log-in there were no icons and you couldn't open anything. Decided to do a repair install using original XP CD. This was okay until it got to 'installing devices' (about 35 mins left), it started asking for files such as 'sunbelt counterspy.msi' (which I don't even want it to install) and won't complete the installation as I can't locate the files it wants
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't use System Restore all that often, but when I tried to use it after the last Windows Update, it didn't work. I didn't think all that much of it at the time, until I found out that someone else I know has a similar problem. I tried it again and it still didn't work. I have tried disabling it and then re-booting, turning it on again, re-booting and then setting another resore point, hoping this will clear any corrupted files as well as all the other restore points. Again, this hasn't worked. It is refusing to go back to any restore point I set. What is wrong? I have found this facility really helpful the few times I have needed to use it - in fact a life-saver and wouldn't want to be without it. I am using Windows XP Home - SP3.

"This application has failed to start because Msi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem" so I went to add/remove programs and I got a error saying something like windows installer is not installed. so I went and looked how to fix that.. went through the steps of fixing that. restarted my computer. and went to click on add/remove programs under control panel. and it will no longer open.So then I had the bright idea of doing a system restore. and everything before the day of the uninstall of AOE3 is gone. and so I went to do the system restore to the day I uninstalled it. and I click the date. click the first next. then where it goes to the page that gives you the warnings. and says you wont lose documents and e=mails and I click next and it goes no further.

I'm experiencing problems with Internet explorer which cannot open full pages and shows error in script (I think that's what it is). It opens the top of the page but not the content or it just indicates that it cannot find the server or the page.
I installed SP3 as a security update download for my XP. Everything went fine till after the reboot, where my D-Link program would not work. A message came up, saying it "can't find an entry point to Wlanapi.dll" I un-installed SP3 and everything is fine again.
