Windows XP Home : My desktop boots only in safe mode and system restore fails. Last known good configuration doesn't work too. Normal boot falls in a restart loop. Can somebody help, please ? Problem created by malware (trojans,worms,etc).I use Avast antivirus.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 running Windows XP that doesn`t do anything after start page is loaded except turn off or restart. I can ONLY (won`t allow me to do it in normal mode) do a system restore in safe mode & then it works perfect. When I turnoff or restart it goes back to the same problem - freezes up after start page has loaded. I have to do system restore in safe mode only all over again.
View 3 Replies View Relatedpc wont boot. its a sata hard disk which is detected upon boot. however i dont even get the windows splash screen. in the bios - the hd doesnt show up. safe mode doesnt work neither does last known good settings. i put the xp disk in and attempted to do an (install followed by a repair ) rather than system console. nothing works because the xp disk claims no hard drive exists. is it cos its serial ata. im not exactly sure if its got raid setup etc although i do possibly remeber a viaraidtool popup that might have come up on the odd times ive been over and used my dads pc to educate him on eBay. :-) anybody got an idea. sorry i dont have specs.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI tried System Restore a week ago, but it didn't work. It ran but at the end I got the error message that it didn't complete and couldn't restore to the earlier point. It displayed the red "X." I deleted all of the restore points and set the amount of store to the maximum and set a new restore point. Still it didn't complete. I also ran Malwarebytes - it couldn't find any issues.I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked - it set the new point and renamed three files - two of them were Norton files, the third I didn't recognize. I set a new point and again it DID NOT COMPLETE - I got the same error message!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a new cpu awhile ago. When I moved my old cpu to my other desk and restarted it, it would only let me start in safe mode. It was working fine prior to this. I tried system restore to many differnt days, but nothing would work. I think I probably need to reinstall windows, but before I do, I was wondering if there is anything else I can try.

I press on f8 at the begining, I do get the menu where I chose the option "safe mode" and then it seems to boot up but after a few seconds all I get is a black screnn and a blinking cursor on the top left (this lasts for more then 15 mins when I get fed up and try again) What can I do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows XP SP2 Fresh after I had some other hardware problems. Everything seemed to work fine until I managed to get into Windows. The OS refuses to read ANY dvd/cd that I put inside. If instead, I boot to Safe-Mode, the DVD-RW works fine. Of course I tried to switch the DVD-RW with another one but the results were the same.

im on a Dell laptop with windows XP with sp2..My internet was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working. If i restart it works for one or two IE pages but is really slow. AIM works but is also really slow. But I can use both fine on Safe mode with networking. Any thoughts? I'm assuming its some sort of process messing it up.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently got a few notifications of viruses on my computer. Along with it came a lot of adware pop-ups. I downloaded Kaspersky AV 7.0 from their site and am using it as a trial version. I had an older version of McAfee, but hadn't renewed and do not have up-to-date virus definitions. As the title reads, my computer will only work when I boot windows in safe mode with networking. When I try to boot it up regularly, it goes very slow at the log-in screen and then once I log in, there's only a black screen with the mouse pointer. I left it at that window for a few hours hoping it would eventually load. Not the case. Same thing happens when I boot in safe mode with the exception that ctrl+alt+del works and will bring up the Windows Task Manager and then I can run/terminate programs from there. But no start toolbar or icons or anything else. I have done several full scans and they come up with viruses every time.

I ran all the usual checks and balances; virus, spyware, updates, etc. Also, I have researched the issue in this forum and followed the great advise. I have also run tests on the drives, memory, etc. but they all pass. Next, I cloned a new drive, thinking that the old one may be failing (needed a larger HD anyway), but the same problem persisted.

When i run the diagnostics for IE it says there is a problem with my HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP ports (error 12029). I do not have any firewalls besides the normal windows one and sometimes I have gone as far as to turn that off too but that doesn't work either. The wierd thing is that all the web browsers work in safe mode with networking but not in the normal mode so my ISP says there is aproblem my computer.. any ideas what it is or how to fix it?

It boots up in safe mode fine, I have tried system restore and ran multiple virus/malware scans.
I am using windows xp and just moments ago I get a problem. windows will not boot at all. Nothing unusual at start up but no windows icons/usual windows start up appear and computer sits there fans running. If I try to start in safe mode the computer hangs at system32/config/system along with the usual prerequisites and does nothing after that.Circumstances right before this started.I plugged in an old IDE harddrive(making 2 harddrives plugged in) in order to retrieve some old data. Everything starts up fine but windows freezes 30 sec into startup and the mouse moves but nothing happens(much like my previous registry problems).Restarting leads to the problem stated above.

View 11 Replies View RelatedWell I seem to have encountered a problem numerous other people have encountered and well im rather desperate to fix it though i must list 2 important details
1. I have a HP- Pavilion Windows XP mediacenter edition.
2. My recovery mode does not work and my computer never came with a recovery disc of any sort (grrrr stupid idea to put the recovery on the computer IMO)
3. I have little money to spend as of right now. Buying a new computer not an option and buying a new windows operating system is MAYBE a option but one ide like to avoid.
4. Im more curious as to how i should tackle this. Ive read up on a few sites found a site that gives a bootable disc containing the NTLDR file ( I dont know a whole lot about this stuff)
This is all just very aggrivating for me. My computer works and runs better than most new computers despite bieng 4 years old. This is the first issue ive had with it in awhile other than my recovery not working due to a error about a hive file not working ( i figured ide make a seperate thread if i choose to worry about this issue but if some one finds this to be a important detail please do tell me) Also ive looked into purchasing the spotmau disc for it 'adervtises' it is able to fix this problem. How reliable they are i am not sure of how ever.

I had probs, so I did a system restore. When rebooting after that, it asked me for passwords to get in, both my account and Guest. Niether of them should have actually had passwords on them, therefore I can't get into the pc now. Tried everything, including using Administrator and password blank, still doesn't work. So on some peoples advice, I decided to do a Xp reinstall, choosing upgrade instead of formatting (so I don't lose everything). When going through that process, it gets to the point where I choose R for repair. It then askes which version to install on, so I say option 1 - Windows. THAT is when more probs come in. It now asks for the Administrator password. I've never given one in the past, and if I have then it's one of two options - either my surname or the word 'computer', so after trying both of those, and also trying a blank password, it then restarts the computer because I've given 3 incorrect passwords. The point is that there IS NO password!! I can't understand why it's asking for one??!! This is really getting me down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedVery recently I managed to open a .exe file which contained a rather nasty strain of something which has come back to bite me. When I start up Windows XP SP2, I get an error message telling me that "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close." In addition iexplore.exe starts up in the task manager on every startup, without the browser launching and my baseline RAM usage is 80MB or so higher than normal. Now I have blocked iexplore.exe with my firewall, I have scanned my computer with Norton internet security 2007, Spybot S&D, Adaware SE and I have deleted the .exe file from which the infection originated. Unfortunately, though some minor infections were discovered, the problem at hand remains unresolved. MSConfig does not show anything about iexplore.exe opening up on startup., or any other program I do not want for that matter. I am at my wits end, and I hope someone here can figure out what I cannot....
View 14 Replies View Relatedmy computer hasnt been able to go into safe mode the last two times some bad thing has happened to it. i can easily get into the menu where you have to select how you want to start up, but when i select safe mode, it just sends a wall of text down, and stops at "mup.sys" each time. from there i have to reboot to get it to do anything.now my main problem is that i disabled the graphics card i have installed in the pci and the motherboards default graphics card (i wanted to use the original one so i could transfer my graphics card to a different computer), so i cant really do much about getting into windows to change that, with out being able to run in safe mode.

The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.
All 3 safe mods work fine.
Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.
Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.
The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.
I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.any help?
When I'm trying to start up Windows XP Home Edition I receive an error box without an error message, I can just click YES or NO. Neither option let's me continue. When starting up in Safe Mode, everything works fine.
