My wife just got an Gateway M320S notebook with WinXP Pro, SP2. It also has a built-in wireless card. From the very first bootup, it took several minutes. First I thought it was the Norton Internet Security 2005 that came pre-installed, but when I disabled all of it's elements in msconfig, it doesn't boot any faster. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router in my home, and the notebook has a built-in wireless card. The internal card is set for 802.11.b., and my router is set to "Mixed" (because I have a PDA that

When I reboot my PC it takes a good 3 minutes to get from the "Welcome" screen to being ready to work with only 4 items on System Tray, volume, Sunbelt Vipre, Zone Alarm Firewall, and Win Patrol. The, "RECGUARD" isn't shown but is there also RECGUARD, Vipre, Win Patrol, and Zone Alarm is all that's present under msconfig Startup. I have ran CCleaner, Defrag, Disc Cleaner, and Registry Mechanic to no avail. Under, "Startup Programs" under, "System Information" there is one heckuva bunch of programs listed if that has any bearing on my problem, I can maybe do a Copy and Paste of the list if needed?

I recently downloaded and installed the latest security updates for Win XP. The computer runs fine, but when
it is time to shut it down it takes an extremely long time to complete the shut down. I defragmented the hard
drive thinking that would solve the problem but it had no noticeable affect

WIN XP Pro SP3 (+NortonSecurity2009) Two days ago & ongoing: On BootUp CHKDSK NTSF started running automatically on Blue Screen every time I turn on the computer. "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" and proceeds to check C: for 'Files' 'Indexes' and 'Security Descriptors.' (command line 'parameters' are needed for all these) Then Windows boots up normally. When I went to defrag I was not allowed to proceed because of CHKDSK and something about damaged files. Where did this CHKDSK automatic behavior come from & what is it doing? Is my disk corrupted? Will all my files get eaten from the inside out? (BTW-this "DUMMIE" [me] has NO backup) At the Very Same Time - My Norton Anti-Virus became Completely Disabled. An icon appeared on my desktop where I've not had one before - but I cannot access the program from there, from Start-AllPrograms, or even from C:ProgramFiles, open, run. Nothing. The System-Tray Norton icon is gone too! Tried to download a quick, free good antivirus program for right-now protection: AVG and/or Avast - both failed. My behind is hanging in the breeze. (hoping that Windows little Virus Protection & the Firewall will do ok short-term) I've run Malwarebytes, Spy-Bot, & Terminator, but those aren't AntiVirus. HELP! These issues look like maybe 2 separate problems? Maybe not. Has something really bad gotten in? I'm really stuck! Is CHKDSK the priority if there is corruption of the HD, or is AV the priorty? Seems like I can't do either.Should I run Registry Mechanic, assuming all the responses are true and clean-sweep it? Last time I tried, System Restore didn't work,

I click on install, they install, I reboot - then, hey presto, they're back again!! I know the easy way is to turn off automatic updates - but, surely, there's a way around this?

I am working with a Dell 2400 running Windows XP Service Pack 3 with a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor and 1.2 gig of ram. It still seems particularly slow. I am not sure if it some of the applications that I am running like Norton 360 or some of my settings.

Most XP Bootups take at the most 6 or 7 passes - passes being the number of times the progress bar runs on the bootup screen. But mine takes 12 - 16 passes I did have a problem with Gagp30kx.sys before but i have just reinstalled XP and it still takes 12 - 16 passes to bootup.

Gateway Pentium 3, 700 mhz - 256mb ram, 20gb hard drive.Until a few weeks ago my system booted up fine. Now it boots up to my windows desktop and then takes 20 minutes minimum to complete start up. The SVCHOST.exe hogs 99% of the CPU so nothing happens until it has completed its tasks.I have tried starting it without the start up items and this has no effect. I have cleaned it, defragged it, virus checked it, tuned it.

my pc is taking a lot of time 2 boot up. I have 2 stare at the welcome screen 4 a few secs, then the wallpaper and the taskbar applications come up, but no icons on the desktop. After maybe 20 secs the icons show up but then the wallpaper vanishes, and comes back a few secs later. After all this, the pc connects 2 the network. Why has it gone so slow? I just have avast! antivirus, the xfire firewall, the HP imaging solution center and Free Download Manager in the tray

I recently had to reformat, but ever since I did My computer doesn't go straight from the bios readouts to the Win XP loading screen, but instead shows me the old white loading bars (similar to windows 2000 startup) at the bottom of the screen where it waits for about 4-5mins before taking me to the Win XP boot screen...

the startup is VERY VERY slow. After the Welcome Screen, it shows your desktop and then you gain control and do whatever you want right? Well that's the part my PC lags or slows down a lot. I think the part it lags is when it's loading the icons on my taskbar, like the icons on the bottom right hand screen. I don't have a lot of icons, and they're not resource usage intensive AT ALL. My PC lags during that loading part for about 3 mins or more, and i can't do anything or else it'll make it lag more, i.e i can't open programs or games, i can't even open folders and even if i try to, it takes forever to show up.
The lagging part only shows everytime during startup, but after that it's all good, i can play hardcore games like Crysis etc on maxed setting and do multi-tasks, but i just don't get why it lags so much on startup. In fact, on my crappy Toshiba laptop, it's loads way way WAAAAY faster than my PC, but my PC is way better so i don't understand why. And they both have the same programs and settings, in fact my laptop has way more stuff running on startup and my PC has nothing but games, it's a full on gaming PC only with nothing else, so it shouldn't even lag..............

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):"Some updates were unable to be installed..."This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440).

I recently had a corrupt file and ended up doing a full repair of XP-home. That wiped out IE7-- replacing it with IE-6. I had some trouble downloading updates so replaced IE-7---- Now almost everything works fine. The exception is that I get notified that "Updates Are ready for your computer-- Click here to install these updates". I click on it and it looks like the updates are being installed-- just to be notified that "These updates were not able to be installed" (Words close to that). A few seconds later I am informed that "Updates are Ready for your computer" And the cycle continues. I have tried "Custom" (my normal way of doing them) and "Express" (in frustration)--- all to no avail.

Security Update for Windows Media Format Runtime 9, 9.5 & 11 for Windows XP SP 3 (KB968816).I have tried over and over without success to perform this *crucial* update. At first there were several items failing to be updated but as I did them individually, this one seems to be the trouble source.I install using automatic updates, express and manual, with no luck. So then I head over to the microsoft download website and try installing from there, but still no luck. My little yellow exclamation point shield has camped out permanently on my task bar, and Microsoft seems to think this update is critical to the safety & performance of my pc. I am running Windows xp, (idk what version, don't think it's pro) and any other information you need I will get to you if you would just talk me through how to do that.

I have a genuine XP pro system (Laptop) , already WGA verified. The problem is since 3 days I cannot install updates. Automatic updates are being downloaded there are altogether 76 updates to be installed, windows is downloading them after initializing them it takes 30 sec and it says the following updates(the 76 updates) cannot be installed. The updates were working fine before. Please look at the screenshot. Another reason could be I have recently changed my drive name from C to Z then switched it back to C. All the programs are working fine except the 'updates cannot be installed error'.
