When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):"Some updates were unable to be installed..."This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440).

I click on install, they install, I reboot - then, hey presto, they're back again!! I know the easy way is to turn off automatic updates - but, surely, there's a way around this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedTo start, when I try to play an .avi file, real player and windows media player both encounter a fatal error. Thinking there may have been a windows update I went to update.microsoft.com to get updates. I was able to download all of the updates, but I could not install any of them. I tried to install them via express and custom updates on the website, via automatic updates, and virtually every other method I could think of. After researching the problem I came across similar problems with an array of solutions, including trying in safe mode, running sfc /scannow, uninstalling and reinstalling .net, shutting off and turning back on both automatic updates and cryptographic services, changing .dll files (lccwiz & pidgen), renaming the Software Distribution folder, downloading one update at a time, and other things that I can't even begin to think of at this moment, obviously with no success, as well as running SpyBot, AdAware, and Norton.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe computer uses XP home and is set for automatic updates.Every time I switch off it says it is installing update 1 of 1 even if I have not been connected to the net.When I tried using manual update I was told that the installation of <Windows Installer 3.1> had failed.Is the computer trying to install this same thing every time?If it is how do I get it to install properly or remove it from the list of programs ready to be installed?I think that when I installed the drivers for the motherboard this installer, or an earlier version, was installed by the Intel download.

I then get a list of the updates that were not installed with the ever helpful message "updates were unable to be successfully installed". I had some trouble downloading updates so replaced IE-7---- Now almost everything works fine. The exception is that I get notified that "Updates Are ready for your computer-- Click here to install these updates". I click on it and it looks like the updates are being installed-- just to be notified that "These updates were not able to be installed" (Words close to that). A few seconds later I am informed that "Updates are Ready for your computer" And the cycle continues. I have tried "Custom" (my normal way of doing them) and "Express" (in frustration)--- all to no avail.

At first there were several items failing to be updated but as I did them individually, this one seems to be the trouble source.I install using automatic updates, express and manual, with no luck. So then I head over to the microsoft download website and try installing from there, but still no luck. My little yellow exclamation point shield has camped out permanently on my task bar, and Microsoft seems to think this update is critical to the safety & performance of my pc. Automatic updates are being downloaded there are altogether 76 updates to be installed, windows is downloading them after initializing them it takes 30 sec and it says the following updates(the 76 updates) cannot be installed. The updates were working fine before. Please look at the screenshot. Another reason could be I have recently changed my drive name from C to Z then switched it back to C. All the programs are working fine except the 'updates cannot be installed error'.

My computer slows down to a point that I cannot use it at all. The problem started last Sunday, right after I uploaded pictures I also noticed that sometimes after the computer comes back to normal updates are being installed. View 9 Replies View RelatedIve recently come across a problem all starting after using windows xp disc to recover from a virus that made the pc not log in (some virus called ntso.exe which i got rid of)....I used the windows xp disc with SP2 to do a non destructive install which kept all my files but had to reinstall gfx drivers / sound / mobo chipset and ai gear for asus mobo.I then came across the problem , windows update says it was downloading ,downloaded then said "express install" so I did install them but after about a minute it says error installing these updates and just closes and then update.exe keeps coming on and off in processes.

After reopening My screen had gone to some weird colours which made text look all shadowed and hard to read. I managed to change both colour and contrast to make it readable, but it still has grey lines across the screen. I changed the monitor but it made no difference.

Following that the boot up screen would keep cycling without ever logging into Windows. The BSOD error is STOP: C000012a. I have read many forums and I believe the best course of action is to reinstall the OS. It seems there is an error with the Windows updates when being installed on a version of XP which is bundled with SP3 already installed.

However this system did have over 300 different types of malware, but I have removed these using MS Antispyware and Norton Antivirus 2004. I even got SP2 installed from a CD.

I have a HP Pavilon with Windows XP Medica Center Edition SP2. I had to have the hard drive replaced recently and restored everything from the HP CDs. It worked fine for awhile until a couple of days ago the computer froze and when it started up again the desktop was back to the original after that the computer came with.
I've installed all of the security updates except for SP3, ran Hijack THis, Spybot, AVG and it all came back clean
I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP. It was running fine until last night, when it automatically installed 8 updates before shutting down. This morning, there is a problem. I turn on the computer. It works fine for about 2 minutes, then slows down and won't respond for at least 20 seconds to anything. The fan is running loud as though it is "thinking" about something or working really hard even though I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. If I want to shut down, I have to do it manually. Then, when I restart, it works for 2 minutes and slows again. In those first 2 minutes, I tried checking my email, using a couple programs, etc. and they work fine until it decides to slow down. I have restarted it about 5 times with the same results every time.
