I clicked on the Icon for windows updates on my PC, and after the updates were done, my PC will not boot up.I keep getting one of those blue screens with one of those wonderful error messages.I have tried doing a system restore, several times, but it will not even let me do that
View 11 RepliesJust bought a pre-owned Dell Inspiron 6000D, running XP. On first power-up, after what appears to be a normal boot-up, it displays a message window headed "lsass.exe System error". The error description says, "When trying to update a password this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is incorrect." It never asks for a password to be entered, so this is puzzling.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe computer uses XP home and is set for automatic updates.Every time I switch off it says it is installing update 1 of 1 even if I have not been connected to the net.When I tried using manual update I was told that the installation of <Windows Installer 3.1> had failed.Is the computer trying to install this same thing every time?If it is how do I get it to install properly or remove it from the list of programs ready to be installed?I think that when I installed the drivers for the motherboard this installer, or an earlier version, was installed by the Intel download.
View 11 Replies View RelatedLast night my PC said it was installing'needed' updates, when it go t the point it was going to reboot, it hung up.
After quite awhile I manually re-booted it, and now it only gets to the first two lines in the boot sequence and hangs again. F9 for express recovery and other options do nothing.
BTW It doesn't recognize my floppy or CD ROM so booting from CD it not an option. I do have a full install CD of XP Pro though.
System will not boot pass Dell welcome screen. Does not respond to F2/F12/F8 and this all began after i clear cmos. Original problem was BSOD so now i wish to do a clean install but unable to enter the bios to set PC to boot from CDrom. Got into safe mode once but it freezes. I piggy back the HD to another pc, did a virus/malware clean then defragged and clean the hd. Now i am ready for a fresh install but cannot get pass the dell screen. I tried 4 keyboards but still the same. The dell screen shows the F2=SETUP, f12 = Boot menu and Bios revision 1.0.10.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a friend, seriously - it's a friend not me, that had to do the windows genuine updgrade. She paid the $150 and instead of just plugging in the new product key she inserted the CD they mailed her and started a new install of windows. It seems it had trouble locating files and now she gets a option to select which operating system at start.The setup won't continue (it can't locate files on CD - maybe bad disk) and when she selects the original XP pro setup it won't let her past the login screen.

Found 2 "Hardware Updates: 1.ALPS pointing device and 2.Storage-primary IDE channel.(don't have a pointing device on my desktop) Tried to download updates on both desktop and notebook computers.Immediately got warnings from my virus software and computers crashed. Tried to reboot and got message that the registry was corrupted. I used Acronis to restore hard drive images and all is well now, but can anyone explain this? Don't know whether this was a virus or whether the downloads caused the crash but I trusted Microsoft.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSuddenly yesterday my laptop (HP Pavilion zt3019ea, with windows xp on it) stopped working and i got this black screen with "your computer didn't start successfully`" but that was just the beginning of all my problems.First I had to disable the automatic rebooting because the blue screen flashed too quickly.
the error message is "0x00000024 (0x001902FE,0xF8AF7378,0xF8AF7874, 0x82E94805)" which is apparently a problem of corruption in the NTFS file system (i don't really know what it means)
When I install my BT Broadband PCI card (the one with an aerial sticking out the back), it crashes my system.Which is understandable because after a new install XP (recovery disk) on new hard drive, I am running on XP SP1 - and XP doesn't understand this new card. But should it crash in Safe Mode?If not, do you think this might indicate the motherboard is at fault?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was goin to restart my computer b/c my internet connection wasnt working well, and when i went to the start menu-restart, the shut down button said something along the lines of "updates for your pc" so instead of restarting, I clicked on that. When i did that, the pc was telling me it was updating, then it went tot the blue "windows is shutting down" screen Well, it stayed like that for about 20 minutes, so I thought it may have froze (it's done this before when i wasnt updating, just shutting down) When I went to turn it back on, i got the black screen with the white text that said "We are sorry for the inconvieniece, windows did not start successfully"
View 14 Replies View RelatedI work with 8 identical PCs at work and at home, they all have same Win XP Pro (bulk license), 6 update automatically, 2 have never been updated.This 2 un-updated, still work fast, (as if windows was freshlly installed) the other 6, keep getting slower, & sluggish. In 4 of them Windows was reinstalled 2 and 3 times; and the remaining 2 became ultra-slow.Software and use is the same on all of them.(office work) No additional software downloaded or installed in any.Should I forget about the "risks" of not updating and reinstall and use the no update option???

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am getting the message "C:WINDOWSAppPatchdrvmain.sdb is corrupt or missing. Insert the original Windows XP cd and type r for recovery console." Safemode operations or copying the drvmain.sdb file from the original cd doesn't work. Is there any other way to disable this file or is there any other solution?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI first noticed a problem when a command prompt window popped up during startup.1.exe. After some searching I discovered it was a trojan located on c root directory. I decided to try and scan to remove it. I used Adaware and AVG free and didnt get it. (only found a few low risk tracking cookies) I then tried SpyBot but during the update process it decided it needed to install the new version so it went ahead and did this then informed me i needed to reboot. I selected not to right away. I scanned with System Mechanic to remove junk and obsolete files and got rid of them all. I then did a registry scan and deleted everything system mechanic found.
I then deleted the installation .exes and shortcuts that had been added to my desktop by Adaware and Spy bot.I also have zone alarm running all the time.When i came to restart my pc, it passes the windows XP main screen but then freezes on the Acer brand screen. It also will not boot into safe mode. I just get the normal safe mode screen but with the operating system details printed across the top and no start menu/input options etc.Ive removed and reseated the RAM and the battery.Im really stuck as to what to try next!Its an Acer Aspire laptop about 2 years old.Ive done something to kill it but nothing massively different to what i have done in the past.Im fairly good with these things but im feeling a little lost for ideas!
I am having trouble viewing power point slide shows people send me via email.I recently did my critical and security updates and since doing that it hasn't worked to view these files..they worked before the updates. View 1 Replies View RelatedI know that this is a lot to ask in one thread but they all do relate (I think ) I spotted a program listed in program fills that I have never seen before: Authentium. It had a file listed in it as: AuthFw.exe. When I Googled that it led me to a link to Tech Support Guy were member LOgic posted the following post: "As of late My computer has begun to lock up for no apparent reason. What happens is the following. When i go to click on any program none of them respond. I cant alt ctrl delete cause that window doesnt come up. I then click on the start menu and all the icons for the window update and microsoft update and such are not there as if the it doesnt recognize what program to read them with. I then proceed to restart my computer And The old menu pops up. As in not the 3 big red buttons that confirm log out, turn off and restart but a grey box that gives me the same options plus asking me if i want it to hibernate or stand by. Then when the computer is turning of normally it gives a big blue screen saying " windows is shutting down" But what happened when this computer locks up is that a logo of home edition appears in a small grey box and tells me its shutting down. Is my computer going into some kind of safe mode on its own? Every time i leave the computer own on its own?If someone can please help me with this problem it would be great.
I was in shock because it repeated the problems that I have been having and after many attempts have failed to solve. Let me add that I have as LOgic started using a different sound card. actually I removed SoundBlaster and started using the onboard audio on the motherboard (ECS 848P-A) which has Realtek AC97 Audio. I have updated the drivers for this and searched everywhere I can think of to see if this is the problem. LOgic's problem was apparently solved when he went to windows update and updated a driver. My problem is that often when I go to windows update it will down load updates but fail to install them. When this happens as it did just tonight, it takes me days to get support from Microsoft to help me resolve this issue. I have reached a point that MS is a dirty word that I try not to say anymore.
I found a BIOS update for my system, but I don't know how to install it. It is a .bin file (ak31s20p.bin to be exact). I was told to make a bootable floppy and do it that way, but the instructions that were given, are for .exe and .rom files. Does anyone have any idea on how I can install this file?

Following that the boot up screen would keep cycling without ever logging into Windows. The BSOD error is STOP: C000012a. I have read many forums and I believe the best course of action is to reinstall the OS. It seems there is an error with the Windows updates when being installed on a version of XP which is bundled with SP3 already installed.

I have a Compaq Armada E500 laptop, 4GB, 2.81 GB of used space, 1.18 GB of free space, running on "Windows 2000 Professional" ("Built on NT technology"). I'm having problems downloading certain softwares, it seems "Windows 2000 Professional" just doesn't let me do it. Plus, I've found there's other things I just can't do with it. I've been told Windows 98 is the best way to go for me + it'll free up some more space (you can see my laptop has very little space) + it'll let me download the softwares I need with no problem.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAm attempting to delete three old zip/unzip driver folders so I can install updated versions of the drivers, but every time I go to delete, a warning pops-up stating ...."nothing to do"......, then it slowly (crawls, actually) begins, stating..... "deleting from archive". The files are full, so there's obvious data that needs to be removed despite the warning that there's nothing to do. At the speed this thing is deleting, if at all, it will take days. My question is, why can't I do a conventional uninstall/deletion the way most files are deleted, and why is it requiring so much time? (FYI, once this process starts, the only way to stop it is to do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE- just canceling doesn't do a thing), I have to remove thes drivers before installing the new versions. Is there another method of removing these files
