Unable To Erase/ Format Old Operating System And Installing New?
Jan 31, 2006
I think I need to change my operating system! I have a Compaq Armada E500 laptop, 4GB, 2.81 GB of used space, 1.18 GB of free space, running on "Windows 2000 Professional" ("Built on NT technology"). I'm having problems downloading certain softwares, it seems "Windows 2000 Professional" just doesn't let me do it. Plus, I've found there's other things I just can't do with it. I've been told Windows 98 is the best way to go for me + it'll free up some more space (you can see my laptop has very little space) + it'll let me download the softwares I need with no problem.
I tried to format my windows XP but it gives me the following message "windows did not find any hardisk installed in your pc" it is not the exact words but it is something close to it in other words windows could not find my hardisk
I have 65 Computers need to format and install new window for the deployment this weekend. But unfortunately, 3 of these computers cant format and install new windows using installation cd. It can detect and boot from cd but when I hit any key botton to boot from cd after a minute the installation screen turn black then stop installation but the machine is still up.
I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
I have Vista,I have another drive, but it's currently not available to use. What I want to do is to get a Cruzer Micro 2GB,and format it to have a bootup for Windows XP. Would it permanently damage the flash drive in any way?
I did a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro on my Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop. My hard drive has a capacity of 11gb. After the clean install I only have 4.8gb left on the hard drive. I have followed reformatting instructions and installed again, but get the same result. It is taking forever to test different suggestions, since I have to keep reinstalling. File system is ntfs. A good portion of the gig being used is in Documents and Settings, but I thought that should get wiped out. I don't understand why I am still seeing folders for iPod, Lexar, etc. I have burned 16 hours on this.
Without going into too much detail. My hard drive has XP O/S on it. All I want to do is to format it. NTFS. So I have a clean hard drive with no operating system on it. How can I do it?
I have WIN XP PRO SP2 on my system. I have a 120G Harddrive. is it possible to reformst to a dual partition, 50% WIN 98 SE FAT the other half XP NTFS ? I dont have my original XP disk So I dont know if I will be able to reinstall my XP off of my backup disc.
Hello Friends,I have problem regarding my hard disk!I have 2 hard disk's. 160gb segate barracuda (SATA) & 80gb segate barracuda (SATA).I was having windows vista. My computer was running smoothly that time with 2 hard disk's.I formatted my PC and installed windows xp.While installing windows xp i didn't connect my 80Gb hard disk. But after installation, when i tried to connect it , my computer started hanging.160Gb is my primary hdd and 80gb is secondary hard disk.I never had any OS on 80Gb. My computer hangs at windows xp boot screen.I tried at my friend's place also... tried all jumper settings also but no use. What could be the problem?
Im planning a spring clean and of my hard drive including a re-installation of XP by creating a Bart PE disk, slipstreaming it with SP3, critical updates and my current drivers. At the moment my My Documents folder and sub-folders are on a completely separate HD so I shouldnt really need to touch those.I carry out regular backs of both drives to an external drive using Acronis True Image. When I re-install XP it will obviously recreate a My Documentsfolder of its own. How do I go about pointing Windows to my existing My Docs folder on the separate drive? I moved it originally by clicking on MOVE in PROPERTIES on My Docs in the START MENU, but if I use this method this time I will just end up with 2 My Docs on the second drive.
mi pc hangs always in 3x% percent i removes all devices and try again ..low format to my hdchange ramchange hd update biosreset cmoscheck temp nothing worksalways crash
Trying to use the system recover cd.to try and repair windows xp pro. I get to the part where the screen is supposed to offer repair. My screen comes up showing partitions on the drive. It also says unknown disk but it lists the c: drive with 76246 MB and two other partitions. It just gives me the option to setup windows xp on the selected item or to select a different partition or delete a partition.I'm not getting the screen shown in the sticky. When i hit enter on the large partition it warned about installing two Operating System on the drive.Afraid to go farther, hoping I can save the files on the hard drive.
I have built a computer and when i go to install windows it gives me this error message it says Error:SXS.DLL:syntax error in mainifest or policy file D:I386asms6000MSFTWINDOWSCOMMON|CONTROLS.MAN on line
I have a friend who has a pentium 2 350 which is currently running on Windows 98SE...yikes!My friend has been complaining that their computer has been running slow and that pop ups are appearing everywhere. I told them that it sounds like their computer has been hijacked and that I would recommend that they format their computer and start from fresh.I want to format their computer and install a newer windows OS (perhaps windows xp) and install a couple of spyware/antivirus programs.
I'm currently using Acer Travelmate 650. I need to reinstall the windows as i'm passing my notebook to my friend. how i reinstall my windows as i don't have a cd-rom for install.
Is it necessary to reinstall windows when you put a new mobo in your pc? Especially when you change from an Nvidia board to an intel board. Or will reinstalling only the chipset drivers do the trick?
I’m having problems with my operating system. I want to install a fresh copy of it. Can you tell me or show me step by step documentation as to how to partition my drive (or refer me to documentation as to how to do so), install a clean copy of WXP from my Dell OEM Windows XP SP1a CD into the new, empty partition, update everything necessary on it (note, again, I received the WXP SP2 CD from Microsoft by mail a few days ago), transfer any files from my current installed O.S. copy into this newly installed copy that I want to install, and then delete this current (then old, once I do this) copy of my O.S.? Are there any Microsoft documents about this? Would this be better than just reinstalling the O.S. over the one I currently have in my computer?

Attempt to install XP Pro on a new hard drive, towards the finish I get errors cannot copy various files, although I'm trying 2 different new XP Pro CD's, and reformatted the drive after unsuccessful attempts. The CD drive has never been malfunctioned before.
Recently reinstalled Windows XP SP2 Home, due to a messed up Registry and upon reinstalling my screen resolution became 640 x 480 px, and whenever I try to change it, my computer won't let me. According to Microsoft.com, I have to install the driver for my monitor. I can easilly re-download the driver from the Dell website, but for some reason my computer won't let me go to Monitor settings. In order to install the monitor's driver I need to access this. Below is an image of the Advanced Display settings window when I open it. Note how the Monitor Properties is unclickable.
Why do people spend $200-$600 on a single piece of hardware (such as a graphics card, processor, or monitor), spend upward of 1 to 4 thousand for the entire hardware collection, and then pirate a copy of Windows XP Home that only costs like $100 for an OEM version if you don't even feel like shopping around for a good deal on it?I don't get it!What good is all of that hardware without any software to run it?And why to people whine about how bad Windows is, but then pirate it instead of running Linux? I mean if M$ software is so awful, then why use their software?
How much space should I plan to partition for a new install of Windows XP pro? My current setup has 3 partitions on an 80GB drive. My system drive is about 5GB and I keep getting the low disk space message. Is 10GB enough or too much? I install all of my software and documents to another partition.
