View 7 Replies View RelatedIm planning a spring clean and of my hard drive including a re-installation of XP by creating a Bart PE disk, slipstreaming it with SP3, critical updates and my current drivers. At the moment my My Documents folder and sub-folders are on a completely separate HD so I shouldnt really need to touch those.I carry out regular backs of both drives to an external drive using Acronis True Image. When I re-install XP it will obviously recreate a My Documentsfolder of its own. How do I go about pointing Windows to my existing My Docs folder on the separate drive? I moved it originally by clicking on MOVE in PROPERTIES on My Docs in the START MENU, but if I use this method this time I will just end up with 2 My Docs on the second drive.

of it. Can you tell me or show me step by step documentation as to how to
partition my drive (or refer me to documentation as to how to do so), install
a clean copy of WXP from my Dell OEM Windows XP SP1a CD into the new, empty
partition, update everything necessary on it (note, again, I received the WXP
SP2 CD from Microsoft by mail a few days ago), transfer any files from my current installed O.S. copy into this newly installed copy that I want to install, and then delete this current (then old, once I do this) copy of my O.S.? Are there any Microsoft documents about this? Would this be better than just reinstalling the O.S. over the one I currently have in my computer?

I can easilly re-download the driver from the Dell website, but for some reason my computer won't let me go to Monitor settings. In order to install the monitor's driver I need to access this. I have a Compaq Armada E500 laptop, 4GB, 2.81 GB of used space, 1.18 GB of free space, running on "Windows 2000 Professional" ("Built on NT technology"). I'm having problems downloading certain softwares, it seems "Windows 2000 Professional" just doesn't let me do it. Plus, I've found there's other things I just can't do with it. I've been told Windows 98 is the best way to go for me + it'll free up some more space (you can see my laptop has very little space) + it'll let me download the softwares I need with no problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhy do people spend $200-$600 on a single piece of hardware (such as a graphics card, processor, or monitor), spend upward of 1 to 4 thousand for the entire hardware collection, and then pirate a copy of Windows XP Home that only costs like $100 for an OEM version if you don't even feel like shopping around for a good deal on it?I don't get it!What good is all of that hardware without any software to run it?And why to people whine about how bad Windows is, but then pirate it instead of running Linux? I mean if M$ software is so awful, then why use their software?

View 14 Replies View RelatedFirst of all, hello everyone! I'm happy to have joined your community. I feel sort of bad for joining only to ask a question, but the boards just seemed so helpful I couldn't resist. Anyway, I recently installed the .net framework to a stable build of windows XP SP2, and now I'm having some problems. I deleted the asp.net account and checked the "don't use welcome screen" box in user profiles because I don't really like the login etc... that comes with it.
That was two days ago. This morning I turn on my computer only to have it take a long time at the windows loading screen, and hang at the off-blue loging screen without bringing up the login box. Now, I wanted to somehow get rid of the .net framework after I realised I didn't really need it, but now it's not even possible. I tried both entering in safe mode (hanging black screen with "safe mode" in the usual places) and using the last known working setting (and got the same off-blue login screen.) I don't mind reverting to a saved state, but I can't even access the desktop to be able to.
Windows XP. I already have a current anti virus - the ESET NOD32 Antivirus. My room mate who isnt familiar with sanity (Hehehe), installed Kaspersky. When she restarted, it hangs. You can only move your mouse cursor and that's it. When you try to click the Start Menu the mouse icon changes to processing (the hour glass icon) and forever remains like that. Nor can I display the Task Manager - mouse cursor still displays the everlasting hour glass icon.
When I got home and tried to boot the pc (it is a desktop computer by the way. not a laptop), it still hangs like crazy. So, I reboot, went to SAFE MODE and did the SYSTEM RESTORE, date before the Kaspersky installation. And it didnt work (obviously since I am here in this forum posting my problem). Computer still hangs like crazy and this time, it doesnt show any desktop icon. I didn't get mad with my roomate since I see no point of it. :P So, I just want this resolve. My last resort will be to reformat my Windows Drive C: but I am not ready to say farewell to some of my softwares that I have no soft copy.
I have aquired a second (also very legal) copy of XP Home thru my company/MS HUP. What I'd like to do is install it on my daughter's computer's data drive D:. She's soon to be living several hundred miles from me so any problem with the computer's OS will necessitate a long trip to work on. I don't want to build a backup computer becasue it's cost is greater than I can afford right now.A full install of XP on both drives and then boot from C: or D: based on setup's boot sequence at startup. I know it'll work; I saw it done on a buddy's computer but I never learned how it worked out over time.

View 7 Replies View Relatedhad virus on system, I tried running as many anti-virus, malware, spyware, trojan programs in Safe Mode to no avail. I came to the conclusion that I should do a fresh XP install (SP2). Everything was fine after re-formatting and installing until I got to the "Installing Network" segment with "32 minutes approx remaining". The first time I waited well over 40 minutes and nothing happened. I restarted and started over with a re-format and the same thing happened.
I've tried everything I can think of:disconnecting the ethernet, removing all my expansion cards, making sure all of the on-board devices were enabled in the BIOS.
I've had triple boot on my PC, 1st partition Windows Vista, 2nd partition Windows XP and on the other 3 partitions Debian Ubuntu (extended partition). I'm using Grub as my boot loader, everything was working fine, booting all 3 OSs was no problem. About 3 months ago my Vista OS stoped working (because I did some bad things with it) ... actually it isn't that important how I did that, because XP kept working (and Linux, of course, too). Like 2 weeks ago I decided to remove Vista, so I removed it using gParted by simply formating the 1st partition to an empty partition. Now my XP stoped working I thought it was because the boot.ini was placed on Vista's partition. So I used my XP installation CD to do fixboot etc, even fixmbr and I ran a chkdsk over the XP partition.
