System Hangs - Windowssystem32DriversMups.sys?
Dec 28, 2008
I've had triple boot on my PC, 1st partition Windows Vista, 2nd partition Windows XP and on the other 3 partitions Debian Ubuntu (extended partition). I'm using Grub as my boot loader, everything was working fine, booting all 3 OSs was no problem. About 3 months ago my Vista OS stoped working (because I did some bad things with it) ... actually it isn't that important how I did that, because XP kept working (and Linux, of course, too). Like 2 weeks ago I decided to remove Vista, so I removed it using gParted by simply formating the 1st partition to an empty partition. Now my XP stoped working I thought it was because the boot.ini was placed on Vista's partition. So I used my XP installation CD to do fixboot etc, even fixmbr and I ran a chkdsk over the XP partition.

Looking for some help, started having problems yesterday when i noticed that my PC took a bit longer to boot than usual.I've had a few crashed when writing to disk, i presume this as i was downloading a dj mix (perfectly legit, from a music forum!) and the screen would freeze, no error messages and i had to turn off. Same thing happened again, i defragged my drive and still has issues, almost freezing, stuttering but if i stop surfing, it recovers.System is C2D E6400, Segate SATA 160GB, 1GB Corsair value ram no over clocking.

stays hung for about 52 seconds, then unhangs for 52 seconds, then hangs for 52 seconds, I am running an older Compaq desktop with a Pentium III processor, and a 30 GB hard drive (approx. 11 GB free). The system has 256k RAM.It is running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301_1519). It also has Norton Internet Security 2004 (v7.0.6.17) and Norton Antivirus (10.0.1.13) with current virus definitions.Sometime in mid-September, my husband (who uses this machine, not me) complained that the machine was hanging on a regular basis. He bought and installed System Mechanic 5 from ioio. (No other new software or hardware was installed immediately prior to the appearance of the problem.)He found a number of problems, cleaned them up, defragged the disk, but the hanging problem remained..
He asked me for my help several days ago, and using the information gleaned from this site, we've downloaded and run the Ewido 3.5 scan (and fix - both free), and then Xoftspy v4.16. I purchased a registration key for Xoftspy, and we've run the fix utility from that, cleaning up the threats, but the hanging problem remains.I'm attaching a log that was created tonight from Hijackthis v1.99.1 in the hopes that you can save us from this problem! I have better things to do than struggle with this.

IE8 downloaded and hangs. tried to cancel and it just stayed on the screen running the IE8 downloading screen. I used the start menu to shutdown the pc.
on restart it lets me go to the bios. nothing I see there helps. I know just enough here to be dangerous restart if I pump the esc button the option to "start from" appears, but, if I choose anything it just hangs. I cannot access safe mode by pressing f8. it does nothing . goes to a black DOS like screen with a blinking cursor won't let me type anything and beeps at me except it will let me turn num lock on and off and use crtl+alt+delete to restart

So I'm running XP on a pretty decent laptop...
3 GHz P4
768 DDR
64 MB Radeon
60 GB HD(40GB free)
The problem i am having is that when i right click on a FILE i get the hourglass for about 10 seconds and just the context menu is not loading. Nothing else on my computer is hanging. When i right click on a FOLDER it goes instantly.I KNOW WHAT YOUR THINKING, that i have some shell extension installed to do something special with files. Well, just to prove that wrong beforehand... I have two external hard drives. When i right click on a FILE located on one of those drives, it goes instantly.
So i thought maybe it was my hard drive... So i moved 30 gigs of music off of it, and i defraged it.

I have an old computer. My uncle threw it together from scraps and sent it to me. It ran very well for about a year or two. It runs off Windows XP Professional. The problem with it now, and i just cannot figure it out, is when i go to start the computer. The computer boots normally, and so does windows, however when it displays "windows XP" just before showing the users list, it freezes. The mouse still is able to move, but it is as if there is no more users at all on the computer. I have been tinkering with it for over a year and still cannot find a way of getting into it, or getting it to work. Reformatting the computer is not an option because i have important information on the hard disk. Got any advice?

Using XP Pro - installed SP2 two days ago. I did everything recommended prior to install, such as updating everything possible (including BIOS). Ad-Aware and NAV 2004 (up to date) both indicate a clean system. NAV 2004 disabled during SP2 install. Defragmented and checked disc, etc, etc.Since installing SP2, System Restore has stopped working. I noticed it first when auto update downloaded updates after the SP2 install. When I tried to install them, the install just hung (because it tries to create a restore
point prior to installing the updates, and System Restore won't run). So I can't install updates either. I'm not even sure what 'HarddiskVolume2' refers to? I only have one disk (C with a very standard XP Pro configuration. In September last year I tried installing SP2 but ran into the same problem. I spent days trying to sort it out, but eventually the MS people recommended I remove SP2. They said it may have been a corrupted download, so this time I ordered the CD. This install was from the CD, but exactly the same problems have occurred.Booting in safe mode doesn't help because it doesn't let you create a restore point, only to restore to a previously created one.System Restore was working perfectly for 2 years prior to this under SP1. I would rather not turn it off, because I don't want to lose the restore points I have to get back before the SP2 install! What else can I do???

I installed a clean win xp professional OS on a new rig (quad processor), no issues. Then I did a Acronis recovery from a uniprocessor pc, and installed the correct mobo drivers. Still no issues. The I did a restart and a repair install to load the mobo sata and AHCI drivers. The pc restarts, but everytime I open a program from windows, for example Windows Explorer, or Software from the configuration screen, or Network Connections, I get a window with "Windows Installer", waiting for something to load. The version of windows on my old pc is sp3, after the repair install (I used a win xp slipstreamed with sp2), I see sp2 on my info screen of computer properties.

I am running Windows XP, and a number of system upgrades were downloaded and being installed during shutdown. Unfortunately, the power got turned off partway through this, and now the computer won't boot up. I tried putting the Windows CD in to run a repair installation, but it still gets stuck.I get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, but when I press a key there are two lines of text that appear and disappear too quickly for me to read them, and then it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, and doesn't do anything else.

I did a big no no I know. I changed a key in the registery without backing up. I am now unable to run .exe files. For example I am tring to install drivers for a USB PCI 2.0 card. I entered in the disk and double click on .exe file and get error> Cannot find the file d:usb2.0 cardviavia6202setup.exe. Make sure the path and the filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. This error is consistant when I try and run any .exe file. 2nd example start>run>iexplore.exe get error cannot find file iexplore.exe. Make sure..... and the rest of the error message. This started when I was tring to manually remove a virus. I followed the directions from this website. http://www.symantec.com/security_res...445-99&tabid=3 see step 6 Delete the current value data, and then type: "%1" %* quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.

I am trying to install driver for blackberry storm. I installed the driver but Wizard installer wouldn't find it, even when I identified specific location. I did workaround on device manager by pointing to the device (USB controller) then browsing to the driver's location and when it recognized it I hit the "next" button for the install, the file transfer hangs.

A Dell Dimension 8200, I can start the computer just fine in safe mode, but when I try to log in normally it lets me type in my password and then either just hangs after that saying loading personal settings or it'll get to my desktop background, but no programs will appear and it will just hang there. I've deleted any old programs I could find in safe mode and the only thing I've recently installed is a Java update. I also used system restore to go back before the Java update and I'm having the same problem.

it wasnt problematic when i 1st set it up about a month ago. the startup was defo alot quicker.the system sometimes hangs during a game, it used to hang on startup but i fixed that with system restore in startup because of the slow startup (where it doesnt seem to be actually doing anything! no cpu of mem usage just ages to load startup programs) i used some startup removal programs to delete all unnecessary startup program, it hasnt speeded anything up it takes the same amount of time but just loads less programs.i have also run ccleaner, reg cleaners, tried running ad-aware but never completed a scan as it freezes. i have always had zonealarm pro runing and bitdefender
when powering up it seems to show the blackscreen very often, asking to turn on in safe mode? even when the pc had been shutdown properly. othertimes on powering on the pc hangs on the windows loading page or when enering the password.the pc can also restart randomly during general use or gaming.this is very fustarting and was hoping you guys could give me some of your advice? i was thinking maybe do a system restore to the day when the pc was first built? would this be a really dumb move? what would be the consequences?

This problem surfaced when I was editing a movie, (in "Movieshop") playback became a problem. Although I don't believe that movieshop was the cause of the problem, during the edit process, outlook played a sound to tell me I had mail - there was none.I have tried to repair my o/s but I am still experiencing problems, including:"Unable to complete the operation on "Application/Security/System/Antivirus" the interface was unknown" when trying to read the event viewer. My drivers seem to have rolled back. Moviemaker crashes, microsoft say that this is due to my soundcard driver, I have updated and rolled back about 5 times - no change.Boot ups take forever, the "windows is starting up" screen sits for far too long.

When XP Pro was functional I had 4 partitions on my 30 gig laptop drive in the following order as the appeared physically on the disk:
1: C: - a 2 gig dos partition for ancient non xp emulation compatible software
2: A linux partition for a common distro
3: the swap partition for the linux distro
4: E: - a 14 gig xp pro ntfs partition with my xp pro system files on it..
Now I believe my CD-ROM was using D: at this time for some reason or another... I don't quite remember for sure, but I am 100% positive that my system part was on E:
So I grab paragon partition manager and wipe the linux partition and merge it with the E: partition.. I must have really messed something up in the merge because it ended up changing my e: system part to d:. So now the system goes all the way through the first windows xp splash screen and hangs on the second one, after it loads the gui and before it provides the login prompt. I've set up a BartPE disk so that I could load the hkey_local_user hive to rename the mounted drives, but I must be doing something wrong because it saves the changes i make to the mounted drive d: to e: but it does not actually change the name of the mounted drive... it's still showing up as D:.. I have not tried a repair install because I assume it will not work due to the fact that it will detect the windows OS on d: and will probably just correct the OS and not any of the applications installed. Instead of attempting this I would rather blow away the part and start over from scratch which I will when I get tired of fooling with this.

Hi! I've been working on a friend's kids pc that had 250+ viruses on it and it would only boot in safe mode. I removed the viruses, and attempted to run chkdisk/f, the system said it had to reboot to complete chkdisk, I rebooted and forgot it would only boot to safe mode and now it hangs at loading the mup.sys driver. I'm unable to get back into safemode or anything. I was able to launch the emachine recovery cd, but all I could get to run was ghost, and it advised running chkdisk cuz the drive has errors, I'm stuck, should I try and use my pc's winxp disk and try the recovery console on it? At this point we're ok with formatting and starting over anyways.

when closing my computer down it hangs on saving your settings. You can hear the 'tower' closing down, but the screen doesn't disappear and the pc won't close down. I have to do it at the tower. I have run spywareblaster, avgspyware, avgantivirus, housecall x2 and spybot. Nothing shows up except the odd tracking cookie, which I delete, but the problem still continues. Would I have a virus or anything else that these can't find. Is there anything else I can try.

I recently assembled my new system and did almost exactly the same installation process as I have done for my old system many times (except drivers for my new hardware). But now I experience random freezes at the blue Welcome screen. If logon process goes normally, there are three stages I have noticed:
1- right after boot screen disappears and welcome screen appears there is some HDD activity
2-hdd activity stops for 1 or 2 seconds
3-hdd activity starts again
But one time out of 10 or 20 everything freezes at the stage 2. I can move the mouse, turn NumLock on/off on my keboard, but I cannot select any user name to log on they are frozen. I tried using Windows Logo key + U (usually this brings up Utility Manager for Accessibilty) but it does not work.
So the only choice is do a hard reset.I did not find any errors in Event Viewer or any hardware conflicts. I have tried to use /bootlog option in boot.ini file but it logs only drivers and nothing about what happens at logon stage.Any ideas? Or maybe a good utility which can log everything that happens when my pc boots up and after that until Desktop appears?
