I have this ongoing prob with XP sp2 that most often when powering down I get a "saving your settings" screen, the only solution I have is to power down. How do I find out what is causing this problem and deal with it?
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to get my Nvidia Display settings to save under the Change Display Configuration panel and every time I reboot they seem to revert back to regular settings under another resolution.I am using a laptop with a LCD monitor and I'm trying to get the "Only use one display (Single)" setting to stick, and it works when I hit apply but after the reboot it gets removed back to (Clone).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a major problem with XP Home Edition. When I start my computer, I get the Loading Settings screen, which automatically switches to the Saving Settings screen and then goes back to Loading Settings, Saving Settings, etc, etc, (the "Windows XP Startup" and "Windows XP Shutdown" sounds repeat themselves one right after the other). By the way, I have the XP tweak that skips the Welcome and log on screens at startup since I'm the only person that uses the computer. I've tried Debugging, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Restore To Last Working Settings and a few others, but nothing is working. I ran Spybot just before shutting down the computer the last time it worked and got the "Congratulations! Your system contains no spyware" message. When I restarted the computer, I started having this problem. I also have Norton Anti Virus 2004 and did a Live Update (manually) a few hours before this started happening.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get a computer to output the same thing to at least two seperate monitors. All I can seem to manage to do is get an extended desktop, which means I can drag things off of my screen onto the other monitor instead of displaying the same thing on both monitors which is what I am trying to do. When I uncheck the "Extend my windows desktop to this computer" on another display it disables the monitor, and when I enable the display it automatically checks it.
In this Compaq (I know Compaq sucks) computer I have 2 video cards. One onboard, and one PCI. The PCI video card has 2 outputs, the onboard has one. I have reached a point where in Windows XP I can output to 3 seperate monitors utilizing the extended desktop feature, which means I am outputting from the PCI video card and the onboard video card. In order to do this I used a microsoft work around in which you must disable hardware acceleration on each driver.
I changed the DPI settings on the display from 96 to 120. Now everything is messed up and I want to change it back. Here is where the problem lies... I can get back to where I did it but the box is so big now that the option of hitting "apply" is not able to be seen. Is there any other way to restore my display settings?
View 13 Replies View RelatedMy computer has gotten to where it no longer will save folder settings. I don't know why this would happen? It no longer opens my folders full screen and all of the folders are the same style. I go to my pictures folder and set it to view thumbnails. As soon as I back out and go back in, they are back to tiles. Every folder is in tiles no matter what I try to set it to. It got this way because I set it to save every folder as that option because, before, it would randomly change the view setting to any folder. One day, my pictures would be thumbnails, the next a filmstrip, the next tiles, and so forth without an increase or decrease in the amount of pictures there. I even change the "type" of folder to something different: Music, lots of pictures, few pictures, documents, etc. Still the same settings.NOW it is getting to where it won't even save the order I put my quick launch icons in. I had them in the same order for over a year and now they won't stay that way. Nothing has changed?Oh, and it's also giving me a blue screen of death when I try to open pictures with Windows Media Player.Virus software and adware software don't find anything suspicious.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided to run a registry cleaning programme a couple of nights ago without setting a system restore point, which may be one of the dumber decisions that I've made as of late.Right now, Windows XP is not saving my settings and acting rather peculiar.In particular:
-When I boot up, it does not remember to display the Quick Launch bar. I have to put it on manually every time.
-My folder toolbar settings are never saved - when I click on My Computer, I want the "Address Bar" toolbar to always show. As soon as I click off My Computer, the setting is forgotten and the address bar is gone.
-When I boot up, my desktop icons are arranged by name and not in the custom arrangement that I created for them.
-Most frustratingly, once I arrange my desktop icons back into the order I want and align them by grid, they instantly revert back to the old "by name" settings as soon as I make any kind of application change. (I'm not sure I described this well, so I'll give an example. Go into My Computer, click on Tools, Folder Options, View. If I check any box or make any change and hit "apply," all of the icons revert back to the by name order and my 'align by grid' setting is completely forgotten).I have tried restoring my system to a variety of points within the last week, but I have had no success; whenever I try, Windows XP gives me an error message upon booting up.I am quite certain that this problem is somehow linked to the registry alterations I made a couple of days ago, but have no way of knowing for certain. It appears that my Windows XP is locked into a particular brand of settings that I do not want. But I could be quite incorrect about this.I hope have described this well enough that someone can come along and help.
i need to do a clean install but half way through some pc games is it possable to save them and restore them to a clean hard drive if so how.

I get a window that says "Setting up Personalized Settings" when I logon to my account, or any others I create.I've Google'd it and the only one I've found was not fixed, and all the others are talking about a file called loadwc.exe, which does not exist on XP.

I set them to my own settings but after I restart my computer the settings go back to default. Does anyone know why this might happen? Could it be that I deleted a windows registry key?

View 2 Replies View RelatedRunning windows XP Pro and networked wirelessly to a windows XP home with admin priveleges. Both have latest service packs. Had same problem as some past threads regarding recalling folder view settings. Followed that advice and deleted the recommended registry lines + applied Kelly's BAG Limit fix. Reset individual folder views/settings and these now saved OK. EXCEPT as follows:Through My Comp I open Drive C: and window opens at size/pos saved but does not remember that I set VIEW/FOLDERS for a split pane.If I then continue and expand, say, My Documents, or any other folder which has had its view defined and saved, then close current window, the next time I open a folder from my desk top (eg My folder, Download, etc) it opens at the size and view settings of the "Drive C:" window. I can then reset that window view again until I repeat steps above when it is again lost.

View 23 Replies View RelatedThe monitor started showing graphic distortion. I ordered a new monitor but had the same distortion on it. I updated the ATI drivers but it did not solve the problem. In trying to trouble shoot the problem following directions on the ATI website, I changed all the graphic settings to the lowest and slowest available. This got rid of the distortion but the settings need to go! Now I cannot open the display settings.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAll my text/font display settings seem to have changed. I downloaded a freeware program today called avi2dvd, to convert avi video files to iso files for burning to DVD. I tried it out, got frustrated with it, and uninstalled it. After I uninstalled it, I went to check my email. That's when I first noticed that all the text in my yahoo email account had changed - it seemed smaller, like it was at a lower resolution.
I clicked on a few more pages and it was the same for all of them - the text was just not as...smooth. Not as readable. And definitely smaller. It's not just a font size thing, I'm not that much of a newbie, I tried enlarging the font and it's definitely a resolution thing, not just a font or size issue. Then I tried out some other programs, and found out that the problem was system-wide. I use a writing program called Final Draft, and the text in that is also less readable.I found one program that hadn't been affected: IE all my web pages display fine in Explorer.
my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.
For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features

View 8 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to adjust the brightness of my monitor other than using the Menu/Controls that are on the monitor (using a SyncMaster 172n). I calibrate my monitor using Pantone Huey, having set the brightness / contrast both to zero, but it is still too bright.
I went through the Control Panel > Display settings but didn't see anything. Maybe it's hidden somewhere?
while changing the background colour to my desktop from blue to black, i was told to "please wait" while it changed the colour. as i was waiting, the whole monitor except for the "please wait" box went black and white. you know, i actually kind of liked it. it wouldn't be bad to work in black and white from time to time for a change.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWindows XP. In the Display Properties, under Desktop, there are 3 Position settings: Centre, Tile and Stretch. While the PC is on, I cannot change the settings. But if I change the settings before shutting down, the Display will have the new setting at Startup. As glitches go, I can live with it. It's not driving me to drink. But I'm curious. A friendly geek looked at it for about 2 hours and couldn't solve the problem. If there's anybody out there with nothing better to do --and this describes a lot of us-- have a look, will you? View 10 Replies View RelatedBoth browsers (IE and Firefox) display pages with no background on one of my computers (Sony laptop running WinXP SP1.) I have two more computers on the same wireless network and there is no problem there. Everything works fine on the machine in question, except of this problem. Since the problem is the same in TWO browsers, I think it might be some wrong setting in XP. Attached are screen shots from two of my computers. The image on top is how a web page looks on one of my other computers and the image at the bottom shows the problem I have on the machine in question. Every single Site (not just this one) looks like the bottom image, BOTH in IE and Firefox, on this machine. This looks as if some "global" command "do not show background" is set, but, as far as I know, there's no such command.

View 10 Replies View Relatedwhen I open some games, the screen is off center and there is a large black bar at the bottom of the screen and the top of the game screen is not visible. When I change the screen resolution or just the resolution or window for the game to run in, it does not make a difference. After searching for a long, long time, I came to the conclusion that perhaps the driver for my video card needs to be updated. I have no idea what my video card is so I was trying to find out.
When I right click the desktop to bring up the Display Properties and click on the Settings tab... when I try to click the Advanced button to bring up the properties for the monitor and video adapter, I get a Windows Error Message that reads:

My friend installed a video game on his HP desktop (w/Windows XP) and changed the resolution settings to some odd selection that was 756x??? - something I had never seen before. Every time he loaded the game, it was illegible. In trying to change the display settings to make them compatible with the game, he chose this odd resolution (which was now available for some reason) for the desktop display settings, and now nothing can be read on the screen.
