Can't Delete Old Owner File In Docs / Settings Folder

Jun 19, 2008

I have a used laptop and have removed all of the previous owner's data. I have created a new user. I have changed the owner's name in My Computer and in the registry. Everything works well and I can find all my new files in My Documents as I expect. However in C:Docs and Settings there is a folder with the old owner's name. XP will not let me rename it or delete it and says it is "a Windows system folder and is requred for Windows to run properly". Apparently some part of XP is still using some files/folders in the old owner's name folder. How can I get around this so I can clean up my disk and delete the old owner's folder?

Access Denied To Docs And Settings Folder For Administrator

Jan 15, 2007

I have a Dell 4600 with with 769MB Ram and Windows XP Pro. My XP boot sequence got corrupted (according to Dell) on my "C" drive. They wanted me to reformat the drive (and lose all my work). Instead I installed XP onto my secondary drive and nenamed it "C", set up a special partition on my secondary drive to receive the old files ("D") and renamed the "bad" drive to "G". Though I can access/copy most files from "G" onto "D", my "Documents and Settings/Administrator" directory on "G" (not password-protected, but contained a lot of files) are all "access-denied". I can't open/view these files on "G" or even copy them to "D". If I try to open them, I get a "files inaccessible, access is denied" msg.

Display Issues- Graphic Distortion And Cannot Open The Display Settings

May 8, 2008

The monitor started showing graphic distortion. I ordered a new monitor but had the same distortion on it. I updated the ATI drivers but it did not solve the problem. In trying to trouble shoot the problem following directions on the ATI website, I changed all the graphic settings to the lowest and slowest available. This got rid of the distortion but the settings need to go! Now I cannot open the display settings.

Display Issues-all The Text/font Display Settings Seem To Have Changed But Not IE

Apr 3, 2008

All my text/font display settings seem to have changed. I downloaded a freeware program today called avi2dvd, to convert avi video files to iso files for burning to DVD. I tried it out, got frustrated with it, and uninstalled it. After I uninstalled it, I went to check my email. That's when I first noticed that all the text in my yahoo email account had changed - it seemed smaller, like it was at a lower resolution.

I clicked on a few more pages and it was the same for all of them - the text was just not as...smooth. Not as readable. And definitely smaller. It's not just a font size thing, I'm not that much of a newbie, I tried enlarging the font and it's definitely a resolution thing, not just a font or size issue. Then I tried out some other programs, and found out that the problem was system-wide. I use a writing program called Final Draft, and the text in that is also less readable.I found one program that hadn't been affected: IE all my web pages display fine in Explorer.

Display Settings Changed: Wont Access Features In Display Tab?

Apr 18, 2006

my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.

For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features

Monitor / Display Settings (XP)

Sep 21, 2008

Is there a way to adjust the brightness of my monitor other than using the Menu/Controls that are on the monitor (using a SyncMaster 172n). I calibrate my monitor using Pantone Huey, having set the brightness / contrast both to zero, but it is still too bright.
I went through the Control Panel > Display settings but didn't see anything. Maybe it's hidden somewhere?

Display Properties Positional Settings

Oct 16, 2009

Windows XP. In the Display Properties, under Desktop, there are 3 Position settings: Centre, Tile and Stretch. While the PC is on, I cannot change the settings. But if I change the settings before shutting down, the Display will have the new setting at Startup. As glitches go, I can live with it. It's not driving me to drink. But I'm curious. A friendly geek looked at it for about 2 hours and couldn't solve the problem. If there's anybody out there with nothing better to do --and this describes a lot of us-- have a look, will you? Or if you've had this problem and know the answer, I'd like to hear it. OK? But don't waste too much time on;

Display Settings Effect Browsers

Apr 30, 2006

Both browsers (IE and Firefox) display pages with no background on one of my computers (Sony laptop running WinXP SP1.) I have two more computers on the same wireless network and there is no problem there. Everything works fine on the machine in question, except of this problem. Since the problem is the same in TWO browsers, I think it might be some wrong setting in XP. Attached are screen shots from two of my computers. The image on top is how a web page looks on one of my other computers and the image at the bottom shows the problem I have on the machine in question. Every single Site (not just this one) looks like the bottom image, BOTH in IE and Firefox, on this machine. This looks as if some "global" command "do not show background" is set, but, as far as I know, there's no such command.

I'd like to change it to one of my accounts if possible, (I primarily use a university based webmail account), and if I can't change it to anything but hotmail or msn then I would like to remove it.

I haven't been able to figure out where to find this setting.

Display Properties > Settings > Advanced Error

Aug 24, 2007

when I open some games, the screen is off center and there is a large black bar at the bottom of the screen and the top of the game screen is not visible. When I change the screen resolution or just the resolution or window for the game to run in, it does not make a difference. After searching for a long, long time, I came to the conclusion that perhaps the driver for my video card needs to be updated. I have no idea what my video card is so I was trying to find out.

When I right click the desktop to bring up the Display Properties and click on the Settings tab... when I try to click the Advanced button to bring up the properties for the monitor and video adapter, I get a Windows Error Message that reads:

Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Display Settings Changed / Having 2 PCI Cards On One System?

Dec 7, 2005

I am trying to get a computer to output the same thing to at least two seperate monitors. All I can seem to manage to do is get an extended desktop, which means I can drag things off of my screen onto the other monitor instead of displaying the same thing on both monitors which is what I am trying to do. When I uncheck the "Extend my windows desktop to this computer" on another display it disables the monitor, and when I enable the display it automatically checks it.

In this Compaq (I know Compaq sucks) computer I have 2 video cards. One onboard, and one PCI. The PCI video card has 2 outputs, the onboard has one. I have reached a point where in Windows XP I can output to 3 seperate monitors utilizing the extended desktop feature, which means I am outputting from the PCI video card and the onboard video card. In order to do this I used a microsoft work around in which you must disable hardware acceleration on each driver.

Hidden Files And Folders Display - Default Admin Account

Aug 7, 2005

I'm having trouble with the 'Show hidden files and folders' setting in the folder options. No matter how many times I try to set the computer to display hidden files and folders, the computer completely ignores it and resets it to 'Do not show hidden files and folders'. The account I am using while trying to change the setting is a admin account though not the default admin account. I have tried to change the setting in the default admin account and the same thing happens. I'm running XP Pro with SP2. As far as I can tell this problem started after I uninstalled a browser hijack program that got installed without my consent though I am not positive that this problem did not start before the browser hijacker problem occurred. I'm assuming the registry is corrupted and short of reinstalling windows I don't know how to fix the problem.

How Many My Docs Do Have?

May 24, 2006

I'm new to WIN XP, when I got my new computer a few months ago, it wouldn't let me go on until I put in a user name. It gave options for setting up separate names for different users. I'm the only one who uses this, and would have bene okay with just this. But, I didn't know how to NOT do it, so put in my name (Carrie) as a user.Since then, I've noticed there seems to be several "My Documents" folders. One for All Users (I can understand this) with samples in it. But, one is just "My Documents" and one is /Carrie/My Documents. Going back and forth between them they seem to be the same files. When I click on the shortcut on the desktop it goes to "My Documents" but when I scroll down with this open, I find Carrie/My Documnets. They both seem to be alike.

when I look on C drive, it only has Document Setup (and Administrator, and all users) When I click to open this it has Carrie/Documents. It doesn't show separate folders one "My Documents" and one "Carrie/My Documents".My question (and I once read there "there are no stupid questions" is this all the same? Not TWO separate file folders, one a plain MY DOCS and one a Carrie/My Docs? (thus taking up double space on the hard drive) Maybe it's just two names, leading to the same (one) folder? It's not saving everything TWICE taking up double the space? When I save something to MY DOCS, it says only that, without my name in it. But, if I look for something in SEARCH, when it finds it, it says it's in Carrie/My Documents.Maybe there's a way to get it set for just one user? Like my old WIN 98 just had "My Documnets" (simple) (I think this could be set up for users to log in). My WIN XP isn't set up for anyone to log in, but seems to automatically separate into more users.
