Access Denied To Docs And Settings Folder For Administrator
Jan 15, 2007
I have a Dell 4600 with with 769MB Ram and Windows XP Pro. My XP boot sequence got corrupted (according to Dell) on my "C" drive. They wanted me to reformat the drive (and lose all my work). Instead I installed XP onto my secondary drive and nenamed it "C", set up a special partition on my secondary drive to receive the old files ("D") and renamed the "bad" drive to "G". Though I can access/copy most files from "G" onto "D", my "Documents and Settings/Administrator" directory on "G" (not password-protected, but contained a lot of files) are all "access-denied". I can't open/view these files on "G" or even copy them to "D". If I try to open them, I get a "files inaccessible, access is denied" msg.
I have a used laptop and have removed all of the previous owner's data. I have created a new user. I have changed the owner's name in My Computer and in the registry. Everything works well and I can find all my new files in My Documents as I expect. However in C:Docs and Settings there is a folder with the old owner's name. XP will not let me rename it or delete it and says it is "a Windows system folder and is requred for Windows to run properly". Apparently some part of XP is still using some files/folders in the old owner's name folder. How can I get around this so I can clean up my disk and delete the old owner's folder?
My computer died so I took the harddrive out and put it in my other computer as a second drive (not the drive to boot from). Now everything under the F:Documents & SettingsLen" directory cannot be accessed. If I look at the "Len" directory and all of it's subdirectories on the second drive "Make this folder private" is not check so I don't understand why I can't read it. In fact the "Make this folder private" is not checked. If it helps any the drive is an NTFS drive.
Everytime I boot I get an "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD DRIVES and removable storage devices" All of my USB ports and my CD are greyed out with a red circle and bar symbol. I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am the only user of this computer and I did not restrict them. I have gone in with the secret administrator account and it is also locked.
Okay, yesterday I downloaded 12.2MB .msi file for ActivePerl(Used for interactive Perl AI Bots), I got it, put it into My Documents and had to go to sleep after 30 minutes of downloading(Dial-up, gotta love it). Anyway, I got up the next morning and much to my dismay I got an error message saying "C:Documents and SettingsSammehMy DocumentsActivePerl-5.8.7.815-MSWin32-x86-211909.msi.Access is denied."Anybody know why this could be happening? The only idea I had was that I downloaded the wrong file, but I wanna be certain before spending 30 mins downloading again.
I was reading Medicatedsoap's thread about freeing space on a hard drive, I too would like to investigate freeing up some space from the C:|RRbackups and C:System Volume Information folders. However, even after signing on as an administrator and unhiding the "Protected Operating System Files" in Windows Explorer (Tools - Folder Options - View), these folders come up as "Access Denied" both in Windows Explorer and Treesize. How can I get access to these folders?I'm running Windows XP Home sp3 on an IBM Thinkpad laptop.
I just recently tried making changes to the startup using msconfig to try to fix a different problem, and in doing so, came across another. Whenever I try to make a change to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes".
However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes.
I am trying to uncheck one item in config in an attempt to avoid a conflict with Roxio Media Centre 9. I can uncheck the apprpriate box but when I click apply I get the message 'access denied - you may need to log on as administrator to make changes'. The snag is, I am logged on as administrator. I have tried to boot in safe mode but can not Despite trying f8, f12, :sfc / scannow
Please login with adminstator privilegages and try again? I'm logged in as Admin on my Windows XP Home. It happens when i try to start COD and The Sims.
I am using Windows XP Pro. I have three user profiles on our family computer. They all have administrator rights. On my profile when I click on the "program files" folder in windows explorer I can view all the program folders and files. When I go into the other profiles and click on the "program files" folder I get an error message that says "c:program files is not accessible. Access is denied." I know that in the past I have not had any trouble viewing this folder in any profile.
The rest of the message says "Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use".In Folder:Properties, the file shows as 'Read Only'. Unticking this box followed by the option to do the same for all folders and subfolders, then using 'Apply' was unsuccessful, as when I tried to rename the folder after doing this, the message reappeared, and the folder was again 'Read only'.As Administrator, my understanding is that I have full permissions under the Security section of Properties, which appears to be the case, as all boxes are ticked. The path is as follows:- C:FOLDER:Sub folder 1Sub..1 cannot be renamed. It contains four additional folders, (each with loads of subfolders),of which 3 can be renamed, whilst the fourth one cannot, with the same "Access denied..." message appearing.
I wanted to move a folder from one location to another.I cut the folder, went to the desired location and pasted it.When when trying to open the folder it said access was denied.I went to it's properties and unchecked read only, tried to open it again, access is denied.I checked properties again and read only was still checked.I then did a system restore to 2 previous dates. Both resulted in the folder going back to it's original location.I was then able to go into the folder but did not have access to view any file in the folder.
Files on my second hard drive were shared on the network (level 4, Network users could only read) and primary hard drive was reformatted and Windows XP sp2 was installed.(without the files being unshared) Now when trying to access the files the error "Access Denied" occurs and I cant access or delete the files (would really like to recover the data about four years worth of work taking up about 75% of the hard drive)
I am the Admin, and I can't change any of the folders propertys as I again get the "access denied" error. I've been looking everywhere for a solution to this, this is what I found from MS help (not very helpfull) A file's permission may differ from the containing folder if one of the following conditions is true:
After the installation of windows xp the access to my computer is denied i have followed the instructions until "click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box" because there appears to be no check box under this description. I have over 20gig of ireplaceable files in this folder i would really appreciate some more assistance. I'm using Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition sp2
I just completed a system restore on my eMachines computer. I have Windows XP. Now, I had one folder that I backed up, but now everytime I try to enter it, it says Access Denied. I did hide this folder on my hard drive before, but all of my other hidden folders that I backed up work fine. I would really appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to gain access to this folder, I have very important information in it.
I would like to conceal the presence of an admin account.I am not referring to the account "Administrator". User name will be part of the group "Administrators". I would like "C:Documents and Settingsuser name" to not appear, unless user name has logged in to the computer. The computer is not part of a domain.
I have a new Dell computer with windows xp operating system. My old computer was a gateway with windows xp also. The mother board on the gateway crashed and I could not find a replacement thus I purchased the new dell. I extracted the hard drive from the gateway and installed in an external drive case. All works well and I am able to retreve data from the gate way hard drive with one exception. While the hard drive was installed in the gateway I elected to make some of the folders private, ie right click on folder, click on sharing and security and clicking on private. This worked fine in the gateway but when I installed in external hard drive I am getting an "access denied" error message when trying to open with the Dell.
I have a drive (D:) that I am trying to delete remnants of a corrupted OS (XP Prof) and am having a difficult time trying to eliminate 3 folders: a) My Documents; b) Recycler;c) System volume information. I have gone into Safe Mode, to take ownership of these folders but to no avail. I am logged on as Administrator, and have gone this route because in normal and safe modes, the message of "ACCESS DENIED" comes up. Need some direction.
I have stupidly deleted the username from the win2000 pc that i use to store pics. now logging in as administrator 'my documents' cannot be accessed. is there any way to restore an old username or can i link the old 'my docs' to a new username? i cannot restore to an old config as i have neglected to back up anything and its really buggy so internet access is not an option! if this pc was a car it would be delboys 3 wheeler, but i need my pics.
It says I am unable to access certain folders when I click on them.. Now that I have all my space cleaned out I am downloading a demo paint program for my school work.. and I get a message that my Temp folder is unable to to be accessed and I have prove access.
Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file,50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it,I get the message "cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied" Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.
When I D/Load some programmes I get access is denied. I had previouly reformatted my HD and now have drive F, when I try to access certain folders or /and executable programmes access is denied. Currently trying to install Roboform in Firefox
I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.
Well I am having Windows xp pro with sp 2. and I want to apply hide drives settings for the other users rather than the admin account. so please let me know if I can restrict the single user with the help of Gpedit.
I reinstalled Windows with the backup feature provided with the backup (emachine). After I had updated windows completely & replaced my extensive collection of fonts I went to put all my personal files back. I get this message: Quote: "FOLDER LOCATION" is not accessible. Access is denied. It's the "C:Documents and SettingsOwner" folder
It has all my music, videos, photos, & work for things I do in it. I can get into my 'WINDOWS' folder and 'Program Files' but not that.
My computer started acting up. I ended up having to do a system recovery. When I did this though, it deleted all of my names (User accounts). In Windows Explorer I can still see them though, and even access the old files of that one.
Now, the main user account I used on this computer needed a password, so I assume that is why it is giving me an access denied message when I try to open it.
Is there any way I could be able to see these files? As I said, the accounts are erased from the main welcome page, so I wouldn't be able to click on it from there to type in a password.
I had to re-install Windows XP Sp2 and I'm having a problem with the mailboxes and other files in my Eudora directory. Eudora is receiving access denied to the mailboxes and I cannot rename, copy or move the email box files with Windows Explore. I get an "access denied" error.
I've tried using an app to remove controls from the files but it says they aren't being controlled by another program. And "properties" says they are NOT read-only.
i wanted to merge 2 partitions using partition magic 8. i igot the thing started but got an error 1552: frs entry is free
so i booted and the new partition was unaccessible (small hd icon with a question mark). i rebooted again and the partition was online but i couldnt access my data on it. i ran chkdsk /f, it corrected loads of errors but i still cant access my data. it says: "access is denied". i really cant afford to lose this data.
My brother was on the phone to India (HP) and a tech had him "repair" the op sys.Ever since then his administrator folder has been gone. We did a full install of the op sys after that and I thought the folder would appear after that, but it's still gone.Does anyone know what happened to it?Or how he can get it back?
