I am trying to uncheck one item in config in an attempt to avoid a conflict with Roxio Media Centre 9. I can uncheck the apprpriate box but when I click apply I get the message 'access denied - you may need to log on as administrator to make changes'. The snag is, I am logged on as administrator. However, even after signing on as an administrator and unhiding the "Protected Operating System Files" in Windows Explorer (Tools - Folder Options - View), these folders come up as "Access Denied" both in Windows Explorer and Treesize. I just recently tried making changes to the startup using msconfig to try to fix a different problem, and in doing so, came across another. Whenever I try to make a change to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes".
However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes.
Please login with adminstator privilegages and try again? I'm logged in as Admin on my Windows XP Home. It happens when i try to start COD and The Sims.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell 4600 with with 769MB Ram and Windows XP Pro. My XP boot sequence got corrupted (according to Dell) on my "C" drive. They wanted me to reformat the drive (and lose all my work). Instead I installed XP onto my secondary drive and nenamed it "C", set up a special partition on my secondary drive to receive the old files ("D") and renamed the "bad" drive to "G". Though I can access/copy most files from "G" onto "D", my "Documents and Settings/Administrator" directory on "G" (not password-protected, but contained a lot of files) are all "access-denied". I can't open/view these files on "G" or even copy them to "D". If I try to open them, I get a "files inaccessible, access is denied" msg.

I can enter my password and use my account as the administrator.However, when I boot in safe mode there are now 2 password protected accounts. "Tom" which works with my password and "administrator" which appears locked as it will not take my password. I set my computer up myself. I have always been the password protected administrator. No one should have access to my account without my password, right? Where did this additional "administator" account come from? Without the password how can I delete it so that I am the sole administrator?

PC is Extreemly slow to logon taking over 15min to display the background and icons. Launching even the Task Manager then takes 3-5mins and even longer to update. Action Taken to-date: all executed in *SAFE MODE*
Un-installed numerous suspicious apps (eg 3 copies of Kazaa), re-created the hosts files which was blocking access to all AV sites. Using CWShredder, Ad-Aware, SpybotE, Ewido Antimalware and AVG's "vcleaner.exe" I have removed all "extras" from the Start-Up menu, removed 6 viruses and isolated at least 2 "auto-dialers" as well as eliminating a number of wacky non-windows services.I have run SpyOnThis and HijackThis to produce some logs but this is off-course in SAFE-MODE
I have some nasty virus. My computer rebooted after a serious error and after I could not start IE nor could I run virus scan I tried several system restore points but each time the computer was not able to restore. I tried to open in safe mode but after using F8 on reboot my arrow keys would not work to select safe mode and the boot continued with normal startup. I went into cmd and selected safe mode startup but once again my arrow keys wouldn't work to select safe mode anything other than normal which is a highlighted on page. Since I selected safe startup in cmd and I cannot choose safe startup on the boot page my computer is in a loop of constantly trying to bootup

I don't want any of the limited user domain accounts to be able to log onto safe mode, as it allows them to circumvent certain restrictions that I need to have in place. After running virus scans in Safe mode I attempted to restart into Normal mode but the computer just hung at the boot screen indefinately. I finally forced it off. When I switched it back on it gave me the usual black screen saying "Windows did not shut down successfully" and instructed me to use the arrow keys to choose how to start windows, otherwise it would load the "last known successful configuration"
However at this screen only the arrow keys do not react, making it impossible for me to select Safe mode, and although Safe mode was actually the last successful configuration, it proceeds to attempt to load Normal mode and stops at the login screen every time

Clicking f8 and trying to access safe mode doesn't work either. my question concerns an HP Pavillion Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition Operating System. About a week ago my computer was degenerating to such a condition that it would no longer start up properly: it would not load some of the host process properly at start up and the desk top would not appear. The system would hang up, and the only way I could access files was in safe mode.So I decided to do a Full System Recovery and allow the computer to restore itself to some sort of usable condition. Upon completing the initial set up I was presented with, I pressed FINISH and the system froze again, refusing to load the desktop.
So, perhaps foolishly, I attempted a System Recovery from the Recovery DVDs the computer had prompted me to make a while ago, as well as a few more System Restores and Recoveries
Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file,50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it,I get the message "cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied" Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.
