Loop Problem At Start Up But No Access To Safe Mode
Mar 21, 2006
I am not really a computer whizzkid but am not afraid to give most things a go ever since powering down for a holiday my xp start up is in a loop. Clicking f8 and trying to access safe mode doesn't work either. Have tried "last known settings" but still no luck although it does get me a bit further but then I get the message ODBC32.dll was not found in the winlogon.exe box. Then MPR.dll was not found message appears. Is there anyway I can access the c prompt and do anything or should I have a restore disc somewhere that I haven't found supplied when I purchased the PC

I'm working on an IBM ThinkCenter Desktop PC.On bootup, it goes through the IBM logo and then the Windows logo flashes quickly and then is gone and then the Safe Mode screen appears. No matter which option I choose from the Safe Mode screen, the result is the same: The Windows logo flashes quickly and then the system reboots, and then the IBM logo and then the Safe Mode Screen.I have tried running the repair module from an o/s disk I have here, but when I get to the c: prompt and type "dir" it says "error occurred during directory enumeration".There is only one partition.I have a copy of UBCD4WIN, if that would be helpful in diagnosing the problem.I do not have the o/s disk that belongs to this computer.

I was attempting to boot into safe mode through the BOOT.INI /SAFEBOOT function in MSCONFIG. After restarting to boot into safe mode, my computer would restart ten seconds into the login screen. This happens every single time and I cannot get back into Windows to uncheck the /SAFEBOOT box. The computer that I am typing on right now allows the user to choose the boot method before entering Windows. It has an old ASUS board and is running Windows XP Pro w/ SP2.
My primary computer (the one that is restarting) has an ASUS A8N-E and is running Windows XP Home w/ SP2, latest updates. Is there anything I can press (one of the F keys, perhaps?) that will prompt me to choose the booting method? Safe mode has restarted on me before, but not like this. I tried setting the motherboard to defualts in my BIOS, but that was just a stab in the dark, as I don't see what that has to do with this problem. I am thinking about setting my motherboard to defualts by opening up the case, etc. but I don't think that will do anything.

I was incredibly bored and I downloaded an old DOS VGA version of The Oregon Trail from the-underdogs. I used VDMsound to run it, and everything seemed to work alright until i got sick of the game and tried to quit. It locked up, i used ctrl-alt-del a few times, got impatient and stupidly switched off the computer just as i was being dumped back to windows. When i turned the computer back on, i was given the "safe mode" prompt, so i chose to start in safe mode. It then showed that list of system files(?) it was loading until it gets to "d347bus.sys" and asks if i want to press escape to skip loading it. Regardless of whether i press esc or not, it moves on to "SPTD.sys" and asks the same question. After i press escape (or not), i get a black screen, then the computer restarts again back to the safe mode prompt. If i try to "start windows normally" i get to the Windows XP loading screen, the progress bar moves a bit then the whole thing restarts again. Safe mode with command prompt, safe mode with networking, last known good configuration, none of these work, they all result in this maddening infinite loop.

My computer is stuck in what i think of as a restart loop. After powering on, windows xp screen appears (w/moving bar at bottom) sits there for about 7-10 sec then screen goes blank and about 3 sec later it restarts. Windows login does not appear. It will continously loop thru this process. At first Safe mode only started with out networking options. But now I can't start in safe mode at all it just reboots the computer after the scrolling screen of items being started. I am not sure what this could be, and have no idea how to get at least safe mode working.

My desktop is stuck on an infinite startup loop, I can see the standards Windows starting screen then there is a quick BSOD flash and the computer restarts and does the same thing - lucky I have a spare old laptop which will allow me to jump onto this site. Safe mode options do not work I tried the Windows recovery console - typing 'R' booting from the CD but then I get stuck at the console black screen not knowing what DOS commands I should be pushing. I tried goign the other way and choosing to install XP but then I get a message saying C: isn;t configured and will need to format to continue.

this is the best way I know to explain all of this. I am running a 3 yr old Gateway with Windows xp and Sp 1 & 2. I have always stayed up to date with my Windows updates deleting cookies, defrags and so on. I am running Avast anti virus and Armor 2 Net firewall. I have noticed over a period of about a mth that my system has been getting pretty slow to boot up and load up web pages. Now I am having to manually start my PC and I have to do it in safe mode F8 and click on debugging mode. If I don't do it this way then everything loads up and then my PC just turns itself off. I have PC doctor and I have done a complete diagnostic test and I have gone to antivirus.com and did a virus scan there as well as with my Avast. I am thinking that I may have to totally take everything out and reinstall everything back in. The only thing is -is that I don't know what to type in to get the whole thing going. Also I have been getting a message but only sometimes that says RTL cannot locate HPOIPMO7.exe (HPOIMO7.exe) I haven't a clue what this is. Might it have anything to do with what is going on. I don't mean to write a book here but there is one other thing, the other day I had a window pop up that said that windows needed me to reinstall my xp software and when I tried it said that the version that I was already running was newer than the cd software I was trying to install and wouldn't accept it.

An infinite loop it seems. i was trying to start my pc in safe mode, to delete a .exe file from C:WindowsSystem32 which was suggested by a post to fix the "windows not genuine problem". To be able to do that, i ran msconfig and selected /safeboot under BOOT.INI tab. now everytime i try to reboot my pc it asks me to select an operating system (windows xp pro/microsft windows) if i select windows xp then it asks me to select a startup mode (safe/normal/last successful) and then no matter what i select it will reboot it self, and do the same again. If i select microsoft windows (instead of xp) then it shows MS Windows 98 screen and then goes into DOS prompt. from what i have read in some of the threads is that, i have a virus which is preventing my pc to boot in to safe mode, and because i have selected /safeboot from msconfig windows will only boot in safe mode, meaning i am stuck. the workaround these threads were suggesting was to find the boot.ini file and rename it to something else, which would fix the problem, because this file holds the info about in which mode your pc should boot. i tried to rename this file from command prompt (i cant get into windows, thats why), using "ren c:oot.ini boot.ini" but it says file name invalid. i think this is because its a hidden file. then i tried "attrib -h boot.ini", but it says attrib cannot be used in DOS mode.

Computer restarts before login screen unless I interupt boot to choose debugging mode (or set it using msconfig). I've disabled everything in msconfig with no change. I've removed all hardward except the minimum. No change. The error I get if I prevent auto restart during boot is a "Multiple_IRP_Complete_Requests) error. This problem started without anything being installed or removed. If I go in to the BIOS and disable ANY devices (i.e. sound), then the Debugging mode trick to get the computer started doesn't work which seems backwards.

PC is Extreemly slow to logon taking over 15min to display the background and icons. Launching even the Task Manager then takes 3-5mins and even longer to update. Action Taken to-date: all executed in *SAFE MODE*
Un-installed numerous suspicious apps (eg 3 copies of Kazaa), re-created the hosts files which was blocking access to all AV sites. Using CWShredder, Ad-Aware, SpybotE, Ewido Antimalware and AVG's "vcleaner.exe" I have removed all "extras" from the Start-Up menu, removed 6 viruses and isolated at least 2 "auto-dialers" as well as eliminating a number of wacky non-windows services.I have run SpyOnThis and HijackThis to produce some logs but this is off-course in SAFE-MODE

I have some nasty virus. My computer rebooted after a serious error and after I could not start IE nor could I run virus scan I tried several system restore points but each time the computer was not able to restore. I tried to open in safe mode but after using F8 on reboot my arrow keys would not work to select safe mode and the boot continued with normal startup. I went into cmd and selected safe mode startup but once again my arrow keys wouldn't work to select safe mode anything other than normal which is a highlighted on page. Since I selected safe startup in cmd and I cannot choose safe startup on the boot page my computer is in a loop of constantly trying to bootup

I have a lab of computers all running Windows XP Pro sp2, hooked up to a domain. Is there a way to restrict safe mode access to only administrators (or only local accounts? I don't want any of the limited user domain accounts to be able to log onto safe mode, as it allows them to circumvent certain restrictions that I need to have in place. Is this possible at all, and if not, is there some sort of work around I could use?

Computer running Windows XP SP3 which appears to be horrible bogged down with viruses. So much so that when I simply tried reinstalling avg the next time I rebooted the computer I found myself unable to do anything other than log in. From that point the system freezes
I've been trying to get into safe mode since then, holding down f5 or f8 at startup brings me to the boot selection screen but if I select anything other than Start Windows Normally it will just restart and bring me back to the same screen. I've also been unable to get into msconfig from windows

Updated my computer using automatic updates. I unfortunately didn't pay attention to the updates that were being installed. After a restart, I got the following error:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen sppears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a drive is identified in the stop message, disable the driver of check the manufacturer for driver updates. Check with our hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable any memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then slect safe mode.

After running virus scans in Safe mode I attempted to restart into Normal mode but the computer just hung at the boot screen indefinately. I finally forced it off. When I switched it back on it gave me the usual black screen saying "Windows did not shut down successfully" and instructed me to use the arrow keys to choose how to start windows, otherwise it would load the "last known successful configuration"
However at this screen only the arrow keys do not react, making it impossible for me to select Safe mode, and although Safe mode was actually the last successful configuration, it proceeds to attempt to load Normal mode and stops at the login screen every time

I'm using Windows XP Professional. I am not able to log back into my Administrator account. I'm stuck in a limited user account and though my Administrator account is set w/o a password, I still can't login, even through my computer's Safe Mode (which is was the Dell service person suggested
This problem occurred yesterday while I was trying to eliminate the login screen from my computer's startup. Initially, I used a tip from Annoyances.org by entering "control userpasswords2" in the Run menu and turning off the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option

When I tried to access safe mode I don't know any of the local user names or passwords. I also don't know the admin password. What options do I have to access safe mode somehow clear this trojan? I was told I had a trojan before I restarted my computer

Have been trying to fix my dad's computer which has been having a series of Blue screen problems realated to BAD_POOL_CALLER. Followed advice on Microsoft site and invoked Driver Verifier Manager and used Standard settings.
system won't reboot at all. I can get into BIOS area but once it continues past that the wireless keyboard is disabled and therefore I can't select Safe Mode or Last working config mode. It continues into Windows XP and then crashes and reboots again.Ideally I need to be able to make the wireless keyboard work so I can get into Safe Mode, uninvoke the Driver Verifier somehow at the BIOS stage

stop working was a Microsoft update error or i deleted something wrong using regseeker. I had to install another system but i want to use my old windows media version. Every time i try to use my old system it automatically boots on safe mode. I press F8 on when i'm booting up and press run windows normally but it still runs in safe mode. I can't do anything. I tried checking the disk for errors and nothing helped. I tried too restore my system right after the system failure but for some reason there were no restore points. I took some screen shots of the 1st few system and application errors shown in the event viewer.

When I tried to restart it, I got a screen to say do I want to start in safe mode or normally or whatever. If I want to start in safemode it tells me to use the arrow keys but when I attempt to use them they don't work. It does a bit of a countdown and then trys to start in normal windows mode but it can't.
