I am trying to uncheck one item in config in an attempt to avoid a conflict with Roxio Media Centre 9. I can uncheck the apprpriate box but when I click apply I get the message 'access denied - you may need to log on as administrator to make changes'. The snag is, I am logged on as administrator. I have tried to boot in safe mode but can not Despite trying f8, f12, :sfc / scannow

Why doesn't this forum bump posts when you reply to them? What good does it do me to reply when the thread keeps sinking
Anyway...I did a search on my computer and have only found these 2 files relating to msconfig

PC is Extreemly slow to logon taking over 15min to display the background and icons. Launching even the Task Manager then takes 3-5mins and even longer to update. Action Taken to-date: all executed in *SAFE MODE*
Un-installed numerous suspicious apps (eg 3 copies of Kazaa), re-created the hosts files which was blocking access to all AV sites. Using CWShredder, Ad-Aware, SpybotE, Ewido Antimalware and AVG's "vcleaner.exe" I have removed all "extras" from the Start-Up menu, removed 6 viruses and isolated at least 2 "auto-dialers" as well as eliminating a number of wacky non-windows services.I have run SpyOnThis and HijackThis to produce some logs but this is off-course in SAFE-MODE

I have some nasty virus. My computer rebooted after a serious error and after I could not start IE nor could I run virus scan I tried several system restore points but each time the computer was not able to restore. I tried to open in safe mode but after using F8 on reboot my arrow keys would not work to select safe mode and the boot continued with normal startup. I went into cmd and selected safe mode startup but once again my arrow keys wouldn't work to select safe mode anything other than normal which is a highlighted on page. Since I selected safe startup in cmd and I cannot choose safe startup on the boot page my computer is in a loop of constantly trying to bootup

I have a lab of computers all running Windows XP Pro sp2, hooked up to a domain. Is there a way to restrict safe mode access to only administrators (or only local accounts? I don't want any of the limited user domain accounts to be able to log onto safe mode, as it allows them to circumvent certain restrictions that I need to have in place. Is this possible at all, and if not, is there some sort of work around I could use?

The Windows Installer device could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. My OS is Windows XP with sp2. I am not running windows in safe mode.

Computer running Windows XP SP3 which appears to be horrible bogged down with viruses. So much so that when I simply tried reinstalling avg the next time I rebooted the computer I found myself unable to do anything other than log in. From that point the system freezes
I've been trying to get into safe mode since then, holding down f5 or f8 at startup brings me to the boot selection screen but if I select anything other than Start Windows Normally it will just restart and bring me back to the same screen. I've also been unable to get into msconfig from windows

Updated my computer using automatic updates. I unfortunately didn't pay attention to the updates that were being installed. After a restart, I got the following error:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen sppears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a drive is identified in the stop message, disable the driver of check the manufacturer for driver updates. Check with our hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable any memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then slect safe mode.

After running virus scans in Safe mode I attempted to restart into Normal mode but the computer just hung at the boot screen indefinately. I finally forced it off. When I switched it back on it gave me the usual black screen saying "Windows did not shut down successfully" and instructed me to use the arrow keys to choose how to start windows, otherwise it would load the "last known successful configuration"
However at this screen only the arrow keys do not react, making it impossible for me to select Safe mode, and although Safe mode was actually the last successful configuration, it proceeds to attempt to load Normal mode and stops at the login screen every time

I'm using Windows XP Professional. I am not able to log back into my Administrator account. I'm stuck in a limited user account and though my Administrator account is set w/o a password, I still can't login, even through my computer's Safe Mode (which is was the Dell service person suggested
This problem occurred yesterday while I was trying to eliminate the login screen from my computer's startup. Initially, I used a tip from Annoyances.org by entering "control userpasswords2" in the Run menu and turning off the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option

My dad accidentally installed Windows XP Over the current working Windows XP Service Pack 2.THis is on an old laptop which has some important school work which I have been trying to get copied to memory stick but with no luck.My dad thought the laptop was running ever so slow and thought that reinstalling XP would make it quicker again. Now after it has done, the laptop not running well at all.It loads but when you choose ANY user account it loads up till the desktop and nothing happens after that. THe start menu and icons don't show up. Its like its got nothing else to load. The task manager can be run (control+alt+del) and everything is responding. have also tried running it in safe mode but the same still happens.THe closest I have got was to use the XP disk and use the recovery console and try to use the command promp to copy the documents and settingsmy documents into the memory stick but when it tries to go to documents and settings it says that the access is denied .

I am not really a computer whizzkid but am not afraid to give most things a go ever since powering down for a holiday my xp start up is in a loop. Clicking f8 and trying to access safe mode doesn't work either. Have tried "last known settings" but still no luck although it does get me a bit further but then I get the message ODBC32.dll was not found in the winlogon.exe box. Then MPR.dll was not found message appears. Is there anyway I can access the c prompt and do anything or should I have a restore disc somewhere that I haven't found supplied when I purchased the PC

I have a IBM Thinkpad that was setup for use on a domain. I know I have a trojan that has affected my ability to start my computer normally. After I enter in my username and password I let it sit for over eight hours today but I never came to the desktop. I could move the cursor but I never was able to access the desktop
When I tried to access safe mode I don't know any of the local user names or passwords. I also don't know the admin password. What options do I have to access safe mode somehow clear this trojan? I was told I had a trojan before I restarted my computer

Have been trying to fix my dad's computer which has been having a series of Blue screen problems realated to BAD_POOL_CALLER. Followed advice on Microsoft site and invoked Driver Verifier Manager and used Standard settings.
system won't reboot at all. I can get into BIOS area but once it continues past that the wireless keyboard is disabled and therefore I can't select Safe Mode or Last working config mode. It continues into Windows XP and then crashes and reboots again.Ideally I need to be able to make the wireless keyboard work so I can get into Safe Mode, uninvoke the Driver Verifier somehow at the BIOS stage

I recently had a computer crash and die, it was an old computer, I don't know what went wrong, I don't really care now because I realize it was old and got a new computer. Anyway I knew my hard drive was still good and I have important data on it that I needed, so i removed it and bought a hard drive enclosure. I hooked it up to my new computer and everything is coming up fine, but my "e://documents and settings/owner/" folder. That was the administrative account document folder that I used for my work. When I try to open it it's giving my an 'Access Denied" error. I can access all the other accounts just fine.

I remember seeing this posted a few weeks ago and wondered if anyone else has come across the problem or a solution. After using MSCONFIG and applying changes I get the message "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service you may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes".
I've searched high and low and can't find any real reason.. And I'm the only account on my pc. Now for a new twist.. Today when I went by to do some maintainance on a business network out of curiosity I tried MSCONFIG on the computers there and lo and behold they all did the same thing.. These computers have nothing in common with mine as far as firewalls, antivirus, etc. (which I had read might be the culprit). The only thing I know that all have in common is they have all recently have had all Windows updates installed

this morning i went to use my desktop computer, and much to my chagrin, apparently I have been denied access to all my programs and files. I suspect that it may have to do with the windows updater, because when i try and log into my user account, i get an error message mentioning registry issues. My computer was runing fine last night when I went to sleep. 'my efforts thus far'= I can run safe mode, and have done a system restore, a malware program sweep, checked user accounts and various programs; and all allow full access to the 'trouble account' according to safe mode. In short, My main account is in lockdown, my safe mode works. The majority of error messages refer to 'denied access' and upon trying to log iin a get the error message '0x80070005'. I have googled my heart out trying to solve this myself, and apparently Microsoft wants 60$ to even hear my problem,

I was trying to run the Trojan Vundo B removel tool off the Symatech web site, it told me to put my computer into safe mode. When I restarted my computer it went to my log on user menu, I hit the administrator one, then my screen went to black, all black except it says safe mode in the four corners and it says:
Microsoft (R) Windows XP (R) (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519: Service Pack 9) It may not be a 9 on the last part. I can't really read it because it is overlapping the S in Safe Mode that is in the corner.I can access the task manager but not sure how to bring up the desk top
