Open Operating System Expanded Format
Jul 5, 2010Is there a way to get Windows to open windows in the expanded format rather than drag each window individually to the expanded format?

Open Dialog Box In Applications / Drop-down Won't Stay Expanded
Jun 4, 2008I have a fresh install of WinXP Pro, SP3. The dialog box opens up. The drop-down menu for choosing drives expands as expected for about 1 second, then closes back up. This happens no matter what. It just won't stay open/expanded. I must add, that clicking, My Computer, and using THAT drop-down to choose drives works fine. It's only in applications that this happens. I could swear I've seen this behavior before, but I can't place what it is or how to remedy it.

Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

Jul 31, 2005I did a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro on my Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop. My hard drive has a capacity of 11gb. After the clean install I only have 4.8gb left on the hard drive. I have followed reformatting instructions and installed again, but get the same result. It is taking forever to test different suggestions, since I have to keep reinstalling. File system is ntfs. A good portion of the gig being used is in Documents and Settings, but I thought that should get wiped out. I don't understand why I am still seeing folders for iPod, Lexar, etc. I have burned 16 hours on this.

Nov 22, 2006I would like to have windows explorer open with all drives showing and with c:Program Files fully expanded (as if the + next to Program Files were clicked) in the left pane. I am currently using the target, "%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n, /e, C:Program FilesAgent" which expands Program Files only to the extent that Agent is highlighted and expanded. How can I get it to open with all program files visible in the left pane? I must need another switch but don't know what it is or where to put it in the sequence.

But unfortunately, 3 of these computers cant format and install new windows using installation cd. I have a Compaq Armada E500 laptop, 4GB, 2.81 GB of used space, 1.18 GB of free space, running on "Windows 2000 Professional" ("Built on NT technology"). I'm having problems downloading certain softwares, it seems "Windows 2000 Professional" just doesn't let me do it. Plus, I've found there's other things I just can't do with it. I've been told Windows 98 is the best way to go for me + it'll free up some more space (you can see my laptop has very little space) + it'll let me download the softwares I need with no problem.

May 25, 2005After a format and opening My Computer which i have set to open as Explorer and selecting the view to List, i click tools>folder options>view > apply to all folders, then i change the my computer folder to view details but the thing is My computer shows detail but all other folders remain in icons. Why won't they be in List? I uploaded a 2 screens First one of how one of how everyother folder looks like the Second My Computer looks like when clicking on My Computer.Now after setting the option in My computer for view clicking tools>folder options>view tab>apply to all folders. Aug 2, 2005I was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?
Can Not Get Dos EMM / Expanded Memory
Sep 2, 2005I have a Compaq M2000 notebook computer (XP Home Edition w/SP2". I can't get DOS EMM (Expanded Memory)to load. I edit my config.nt file to to include this line also "EMM=RAM".Edit my PIF file for the command.com file to include Expanded Memory. Nothing seens to work. Talk to tech support @ Compaq, they do not have a solution to this problem.

Jul 5, 2005I had some problems with my C: drive, and a friend who knew a lot about CPU's helped me a bit, here's what he did. He came over with a restore disk from his CPU, (even though we have different cpus) and it had Norton Ghost on it....when it booted up, it acted like a normal boot disk, and asked if I wanted to restore Windows XP, right along with Formatting my disk, we clicked yes and the Ghost program started. Only, it got done with about 16% of the format, the CD itself looked like crap, with a bunch of scratches on it...nothing really serious, but serious enough to stop the format. I tried cleaning it off the best I could, but to no avail. So thinking that the format failed, we could try something else, but the drive C: was already formatted, and when I tried to start it, this is what it said, "NTLDR is missing, press control+alt+delete to reboot.

Sep 10, 2009Recently I found System Restore not working. It would neither restore to an earlier time nor create a new restore point. I tried doing a virus scan using Avast, rebooting, checking that it is (supposed to be) running and safe mode.Disconnecting from the Internet and turning off antivirus and firewall also made no difference. I also turned it off and on again. I noticed that initially it said it was monitoring drives C, D & E but after turning on again it only showed drives C & D. These drives are all partitions on my HD.On checking E I found that it had no file system and was advised to format it. On attempting this I got Format did not complete successfully.I also attempted to Defrag and got Disk Defragmenter could not start.

Jan 25, 2007I'm running xp home edition on my dell system. When I tried to boot up, the screen went black and I got the system error message. From there you can only click ok, the system reboots and goes thfough the same process. It also does it in safe mode. I've tried to use "the last known working configuration" from the f8 screen, same thing.I was going to try a repair install, but for some reason I have a xp pro disk, not home edition. Can I do a repair using this disk (it's a dell disk)? Or am i going to have to wipe everything out and install xp pro to get the system to work.
