I had some problems with my C: drive, and a friend who knew a lot about CPU's helped me a bit, here's what he did. He came over with a restore disk from his CPU, (even though we have different cpus) and it had Norton Ghost on it....when it booted up, it acted like a normal boot disk, and asked if I wanted to restore Windows XP, right along with Formatting my disk, we clicked yes and the Ghost program started. Only, it got done with about 16% of the format, the CD itself looked like crap, with a bunch of scratches on it...nothing really serious, but serious enough to stop the format. I tried cleaning it off the best I could, but to no avail. So thinking that the format failed, we could try something else, but the drive C: was already formatted, and when I tried to start it, this is what it said, "NTLDR is missing, press control+alt+delete to reboot.
I have a gateway running windows xp. I had a virus and ran mcafee. It told me to reboot so I did and now nothing happens. hte gateway screen comes up and nothing after that it just stays on the gateway screen. I can't enter safe mode and it will not read my recovery disk. I called gateway and they told me that because my computer is out of the warranty, they would be happy to help me and then gave me three payment options. I have come to grips that I will need to format the hard drive, but I just don't know how to get it to that point. the only thing that happens is the gateway screen and the fan runs really loud.
I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

I have Vista,I have another drive, but it's currently not available to use. What I want to do is to get a Cruzer Micro 2GB,and format it to have a bootup for Windows XP. Would it permanently damage the flash drive in any way?
I tried to format my windows XP but it gives me the following message "windows did not find any hardisk installed in your pc" it is not the exact words but it is something close to it in other words windows could not find my hardisk

Laptop has become heavily virus infected and needs to be formatted. I do not have original operating system disk. It is out of warranty also. It does not boot up always. How can I format it in order to reinstall windows xp.
I did a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro on my Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop. My hard drive has a capacity of 11gb. After the clean install I only have 4.8gb left on the hard drive. I have followed reformatting instructions and installed again, but get the same result. It is taking forever to test different suggestions, since I have to keep reinstalling. File system is ntfs. A good portion of the gig being used is in Documents and Settings, but I thought that should get wiped out. I don't understand why I am still seeing folders for iPod, Lexar, etc. I have burned 16 hours on this.
Recently I found System Restore not working. It would neither restore to an earlier time nor create a new restore point. I tried doing a virus scan using Avast, rebooting, checking that it is (supposed to be) running and safe mode.Disconnecting from the Internet and turning off antivirus and firewall also made no difference. I also turned it off and on again. I noticed that initially it said it was monitoring drives C, D & E but after turning on again it only showed drives C & D. These drives are all partitions on my HD.On checking E I found that it had no file system and was advised to format it. On attempting this I got Format did not complete successfully.I also attempted to Defrag and got Disk Defragmenter could not start.
Can anyone advise me on formating or reformating my hard drive. I am running windows xp pro and have a 20 gb maxtor hard drive. This is formatted as NTFS as one partition. I tried from windows explore and from my computer. I also tried to change to 32 bit partition. Can I do this with fdisk, if so how?
Without going into too much detail. My hard drive has XP O/S on it. All I want to do is to format it. NTFS. So I have a clean hard drive with no operating system on it. How can I do it?
I have windows 2000, it is driving me crazy!! I have tried everything, but it is not responding correctly, and it is extremely slow. It needs to be totally cleared out, but I have never done it before.
Seeing a decrease in performance in my PC after a few months(as expected from wear and tear over time), I have decided to reformat my PC to bring it up to the new PC feel and speed. Before formatting, is there any programs that might give my PC the older performance that it once had? If not any one have any suggestions on methods of keeping performance high as long as possible, as in portioning the hard drive, or keeping my startup programs at a low, Um some one of constant clean program, keeping in mind I mainly do development with 3d max, flash combustion, and gaming.
I need to get my HDD reformatted with the help of a paid technician.Couple of weeks ago he used the quick format method & asked him if that would make any difference & he said really not.I have the doubts though. I kind of wonder why would Windows then give a choice if there really wasn’t any difference?
I have 65 Computers need to format and install new window for the deployment this weekend. But unfortunately, 3 of these computers cant format and install new windows using installation cd. It can detect and boot from cd but when I hit any key botton to boot from cd after a minute the installation screen turn black then stop installation but the machine is still up.
Okay, i have posted thios at heaps of forums and they wont give me any useful info. So now its your turn :P I have windows xp cd. But it will not boot up. The bios is correct, and the cd is in there etc. It says press any key to boot, and i do.It detects some stuff then restarts and loads into my desktop Doesnt do anything. I have tried another version of windows xp pro. Same thing.I want to reformat, i need to reformat. This dialer is costing me money.
I'm running xp home edition on my dell system. When I tried to boot up, the screen went black and I got the system error message. From there you can only click ok, the system reboots and goes thfough the same process. It also does it in safe mode. I've tried to use "the last known working configuration" from the f8 screen, same thing.I was going to try a repair install, but for some reason I have a xp pro disk, not home edition. Can I do a repair using this disk (it's a dell disk)? Or am i going to have to wipe everything out and install xp pro to get the system to work.
Is it possible for me to use the system repair tool (the one that comes up when you boot from the Windows XP CD and press R at the menu) to format only a specific partition on a hard drive, or do you always have to erase the whole drive.
I have WIN XP PRO SP2 on my system. I have a 120G Harddrive. is it possible to reformst to a dual partition, 50% WIN 98 SE FAT the other half XP NTFS ? I dont have my original XP disk So I dont know if I will be able to reinstall my XP off of my backup disc.
I think I need to change my operating system! I have a Compaq Armada E500 laptop, 4GB, 2.81 GB of used space, 1.18 GB of free space, running on "Windows 2000 Professional" ("Built on NT technology"). I'm having problems downloading certain softwares, it seems "Windows 2000 Professional" just doesn't let me do it. Plus, I've found there's other things I just can't do with it. I've been told Windows 98 is the best way to go for me + it'll free up some more space (you can see my laptop has very little space) + it'll let me download the softwares I need with no problem.
In a thread in security flrman1 11-Mar-2005, 06:03 PM #54 "If your computer is 3 yrs old and you haven't reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP, you're way past due."#56 "Typically with XP, it needs to be done after about 1 1/2 to 2 yrs, but there are a lot of variables there and there are those that do manage to go longer."
A friend of mine is having a really hard time figuring out why her computer keeps freezing so I said I would ask you knowledgable people here. She hardly ever uses it and has almost no programs on it but just surfing the net or even poking around the desktop will freeze the computer. Nothing to do but reboot Ctrl-alt-del won't even work. She's tried spybot, adaware, hijack this, housecall etc and I checked it out myself. I'm sure there is nothing like that on her computer. So we can rule that out. She's installed a couple of RAM and HD testers all came back fine. She does have a firewire card installed and if she attempts to use it (for transferring movies) it will freeze for sure. This could be lack of RAM even though you only need 64MB (she has 256MB) as per the box requirements. Could the firewire be affecting everything else even when not in use? Could a windows file be missing? A setting somewhere perhaps? Hardware or software conflict?
It has happened about 8 times. My computer will just . Is there anything I can do to try and figure out why it's doing this? All of my fans are spinning inside of my computer. I am running Windows XP Pro
Daughters PC hangs ever time you boot it up , but if after approx 3 - 5 restarts it is rock solidI suspect it is a motherboard failuer on the memory but not 100% su All so the fact that it is a 1GB ram but Windows only reports 512 seems odd OS = Windows XP with all updates I have treid memtest86 V3.3 as a boot CD and it did not report any error's at all.Tried various other diag's tools but all so no error's OS has been re-installed but again no joy.
Would like the forum's advice on how to fix this annoyance.Win XP Pro, SP2, fully patched, firewalled, protected, runs great and boots very quickly. Once booted up, should the user leave the machine and log off, that is when the problem shows up. Using the mouse or the spacebar, the logon screen appears, the PW is entered, and then 'blank desktop'. No taskbar, no recycle bin, no keyboard or mouse function. To escape this situation, a reboot, then everything is normal.
I had to perform an XP recovery because of various problems. My computer is now running fairly good except for a couple of things.1. Whenever I boot the computer I get a Windows Installer box pop up trying to load SFR. It tries to gather data, gets halfway and then disappears. It does this twice before it stops trying. Sometimes it will re-appear while I try to open files. Does the same as above then stops. How can I get rid of this?
OK I don't know where to start. When my system is rebooted I get a BSOD it goes through BIOS nothing is detected and it BSOD's. Now here is the strange part if I unplug it from power and try to boot again it comes up fine but if I try to shut it down BSOD WTF I have tried everything. BIOS has been re-flashed to latest version for my GA-7VAX MOBO and I have reloaded winXP.. I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening. Could it be my MOBO is going bad?
