Is it possible for me to use the system repair tool (the one that comes up when you boot from the Windows XP CD and press R at the menu) to format only a specific partition on a hard drive, or do you always have to erase the whole drive.

Why can't I find an answer for this question...How do you re-format the C drive?It seems at least simple to me. That's all I want to so. I have two paritions, C and D. C is my system partition, and install Windows XP Pro on it. That's all. In XP setup, it will not let me format it, so to me in theory, I'm at a dead end. So I've installed XP on the C drive three times, all in the same folder, and now it has taken up 10 GB (why?) of space when it only should take no more than 4.

Was doing a Windows install and I mistook a drive for a different drive.In short, I deleted the partition, recreated the partition, but I haven't reformatted yet. The partition was the same size before and after so that shouldn't be a problem. the files should still be there but I don't know how to get at them. I've already tried Recuva, UndeletePlus, Restoration, and a Knoppix boot disk but none of these were able to do anything because of the lack of a file system/boot sector.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI believe strongly that you should have a partition only for the operating system and others for data.If you system gives you problems it is much easier just format the operating partition and reinstall, then trying to find all of your data and download scattered through the a mix partition.Give some thought would you rather have you data safe and way from the operating system?

I find that GPEDIT effects ALL user rights, so when I want to prevent my app user from being able to right-click on the desktop (for example), if I got to GPEDIT > USER CONFIG > ADMIN TEMPLATES , anything I do there dorks up my admin user as well.These machines will not connect to a domain controller so they have to be locally administered.

i know there's computer management menu here in winxp, my question is:on how to format then partition my second hd,into 2(40 gig and 40 gig).basically i need the correct steps or commands.
Although I am not a computer wiz, I did manage to format the harddrive on my old computer by writing format C:, after restarting in MS-DOS while running Windows 98.
With Windows XP I don't find that option. I can get to the Command prompt C:, but it won't let me format the harddrive.Any assistance with this would be much appreciated, I am trying to re-format and re-partition.
I had a ntfs file partition poo on its self. i moved the disk to another computer and it can see the disk but partition magic only sees it as an "other" partition. is there any way to repair it enough to get some irreplaceable files off of it. or is there a recommended program. i plan to wipe it after that and do a clean install
View 5 Replies View RelatedI change the hard drives from one computer CICERO to a HP pavillion , the Ciicero had 2 hard drives 20 and 120 MB , HP had 40 MB ok well , the fisical install was ok master and slave , jumpers set all ok , then when the time to power the Hp now with the HD's from cicero 20 and 120 mb. the screen give the " NTLRD missing press any key to restart" OOPSSsss!!! I did a search between the forums and found this link with this fix ; So now I'm in the screen for the Repair I press "yes" it told me that my C: partition was corrupted and the new bootsector was successfully written ok now what is the next step?? I got the C: waiting to type in some command but dont know which one , I try typing CD nothing then ATTRIB -H NTLDR it display that the system cannot find the file or directory specified.

He informed me that he could, for a nomonal fee, supply me with such a cd but with a different ket No. on it. I then asked the obvious question: If I use the key on the side of my machine, which I'm sure I must, will that cd then, work for me? He said he was'nt sure and would get back to me. I'm just wondering what are your thoughts on this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to install Windows XP from the CD onto my friend's computer, I get to the blue screen where you're able to format/partition the hard drive and then his keyboard stops working. I don't know how to get around this because I can't continue the installation w/o the use of the keyboard. Unfortunatly, he has Windows ME on his computer right now so this issue needs to be resolved.

The UI gets crowded to the point where I cannot click on what I need to, or type what I need to, and in some cases I have to use another program entirely. This has happened to over 10 programs that I recall, and the 'severity' of the bugginess runs from this: which isn't bad, mainly cut off unclickable words and boxes, to this. which is completely and literally unusable (I also need to get this particular one working soon, so if there's a quick fix it would be really appreciated). I see a lot more of the second type, I can provide more examples if asked.I enclosed the dxdiag in hopes that that might help. The one and only thing I might see that would cause this is I have a custom theme, but I've disabled it with no results.

When i start my windows XP proffessional a lot of programs are started like yahoo messenger etc and it takes lot of time for eac of these to load. So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system boots.But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which starts all the progs).I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.
1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ?
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives?
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ?
My brother just had a tech guy come to his house to fix a problem he was having with his email.Unrelated to that issue The tech guy recommended not using system restore My brother does not remember the specific reason for this but thought the tech guy said you can't trust system restore as it could lose things and make matters worse

Now a days it is insisting to install "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)" first to proceed for downloading update files.Is it a FORCE or I can bypass this tool. But, now i have the same problem with the new hard drive. After a while, i realize that obviously, if the disk was cloned, ONLY the information that can be copied was transfered to the other one.In conclusion, how can I resolve this issue without using system repair. the problem is that once i use this tool and then IE won't work. at last I had to format the drive.

It fails because MS backup could not make a full backup, since the administrator does not have access to any file in the system (some directories, files, etc. are not allowed to be read by the admin). Meanwhile, ghost and partition magic for instance allows to copy the whole HD partition.Does anybody know if MS backup can really make a full system backup (with different access rights, multiple users on the machine, etc.), and then to restore this system into a new machine (same model, same hardware profile).That is, is a system duplication la-ghost possible with MS backup ?Is MS backup allows only to copy and restore personal accessible files, I do not understand why such tool exist since any standard copy and compress method would make the same thing. The real backup is when the system can be restored.

It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Bought pc it came with something called RAID TOOL i have no idea what this is but, if i was to reinstall windows would it be crucial that this was reinstalled with it? or could i just reinstall windows xp from the disc and not worry about it?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI had some problems with my C: drive, and a friend who knew a lot about CPU's helped me a bit, here's what he did. He came over with a restore disk from his CPU, (even though we have different cpus) and it had Norton Ghost on it....when it booted up, it acted like a normal boot disk, and asked if I wanted to restore Windows XP, right along with Formatting my disk, we clicked yes and the Ghost program started. Only, it got done with about 16% of the format, the CD itself looked like crap, with a bunch of scratches on it...nothing really serious, but serious enough to stop the format. I tried cleaning it off the best I could, but to no avail. So thinking that the format failed, we could try something else, but the drive C: was already formatted, and when I tried to start it, this is what it said, "NTLDR is missing, press control+alt+delete to reboot.
