Need To Start Only Specific Programs When System Starts
Feb 6, 2007
When i start my windows XP proffessional a lot of programs are started like yahoo messenger etc and it takes lot of time for eac of these to load. So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system boots. But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which starts all the progs).I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.
1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ?
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives?
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ?

I'm having problems with various programs that I've had work on other computers fine. The UI gets crowded to the point where I cannot click on what I need to, or type what I need to, and in some cases I have to use another program entirely. This has happened to over 10 programs that I recall, and the 'severity' of the bugginess runs from this: which isn't bad, mainly cut off unclickable words and boxes, to this. which is completely and literally unusable (I also need to get this particular one working soon, so if there's a quick fix it would be really appreciated). I see a lot more of the second type, I can provide more examples if asked.I enclosed the dxdiag in hopes that that might help. The one and only thing I might see that would cause this is I have a custom theme, but I've disabled it with no results.

I find that certain programs show up blank boxes, instead of the icons which are supposed to be there. For example when I click on Mcafee antivirus software, it opens up a blank box. I can't remove it through 'add remove programs' because when i click 'remove' on it another blank box pops up,which is actually supposed to have the 'uninstall' icon. The same is the case with System restore. I cant do a system restore because nothing comes up when i click on it except a blank box. I do not know what other programs would have this kind of problem. Please help me resolve this issue.

I'm having an issue with a new laptop. several programs or just parts of programs will run painfully slow or take several minutes to load or when they finally do load they freeze. System restore and help files suffers from the same problem along with msn messenger 8, ares, and the dictionary in microsoft works. those are all that i've noticed with the problem i'm sure there are others. i've used registry mechanic tried reinstalling msn and ares with no solutions. also this problem seems to be profile specific. i created another profile on this machine and the problems seemed to dissipear but i would perfer to keep this profile. when i'm trying to load these programs if i open task manager the cpu will usually be low as if i'm not loading anything. also there is somtimes about a minute or 2 or halfway into loading the program loading will apear under the apps twice. one as itself ares.exe or whatever the restore exe is, and one at explorer.exe. i dont believe explorer.exe is a virus it seems to b normal. i assume that the problem has to do with the cpu right now but i have no idea how i would fix that. other than those few programs everything else runs fine. i defreg regularly and so on. i run avg 7.1 windows xp home. its a 64 bit lap i think so i assume it would be a 64 bit edition HP Pavilion.

My company makes products that deploy on XP, like Kiosks. I need to be able to lock down my "application user" rights nice & tight, but leave my admin rights wide open. I find that GPEDIT effects ALL user rights, so when I want to prevent my app user from being able to right-click on the desktop (for example), if I got to GPEDIT > USER CONFIG > ADMIN TEMPLATES , anything I do there dorks up my admin user as well. These machines will not connect to a domain controller so they have to be locally administered.

How do I exclude a specific folder from system restore? The solution mentioned here is wrong. http://www.tweakxp.com/article37472.aspx
That excludes the file from NTBackup.

When using system restore to back up your data, you might want to make sure that you are not wasting backup space by saving useless folders that may include temp file or other non-necessary files. To exclude folders, follow the directions below.
1) Open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_Local_MachineSystemCurrentControlSetControlBackupRestoreFilesNotTobackup2) Choose Edit, new, multi-string value3) Give a descriptive name4) Double-click the value and input the full folder path you wish to exclude and click OKSystem restore will no longer monitor this folder and backups will not be made of the files contained in it.

Sometimes when WinXP SP2 starts not all the start up icons show, but the programs are running. However, there is no access. I reboot and there they are. Once in a while a program will not start generally it is SpySweeper or PowerPanel. Just started recently. System has been swept with SpySweeper, Adaware Pro SE, SpyHunter, and Norton AV 2005.

Is it possible for me to use the system repair tool (the one that comes up when you boot from the Windows XP CD and press R at the menu) to format only a specific partition on a hard drive, or do you always have to erase the whole drive.

Like when I go to start an application the wrong one starts, or shortcuts taking you to the wrong file??? This has happened to me a few times in the last couple of days? I got a XP tweak tool from TotalIdea, haven't really tweaked much with it, just a few visual, speed related tweaks. Nothing that cant be done without the 'TweakXP' program, but I was just trying it out??? It seems that this caused the weirdness with the shortcuts???? Another strange thing when I start the Tweaker it tries to start an installer for a antispyware app?? Tries twice, both times I tell it to cancel, then starts up normally. Probably just uninstall, but I thought Id run it through the TSG mill, and see if any others have similar experience? BTW I have run Regmech, Adaware SE, And my System Mech5 cleaners, but prob still there???

I was checking my daughters pc for some usual maintenance. The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?

I bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago. It's a Compaq Presario (? if that helps). my grilfriend is Swedish so wanted the language in Swedish. No problem. But the computer keeps restarting a few times a day without any notice. I had a look everywhere on every forum (almost) and read about this Zotob worm that turns your comp off all the time. So, from the microsoft web page i did the PC check thing, and it says it found nothing, but i downloaded the patch or something just in case, and it said it won't install because the language is in Swedish, and i only works in English. So firstly, do i have the worm thing?

I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

You see the problem is that when I start up my computer to Windows XP i recieve an error before the boot screen appears stating:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."This is not my first site i visited to try to find a solution. I have been to many explaining all different types of solutions. Luckly I am a pretty experienced computer person and also a technician, so I have a fighting chance to try to restore my pc to the proper condition.

Every time I start up my computer and goes to the desktop, there are no icons, toolbars, or even the "Start" button, it only shows the desktop background, and all I can use is the Task Manager to access a couple of programs. I tried using Norton Antivirus, but did not find anything, so I uninstalled it. My "CPU Usage" is at 0 and 1% almost dead, I saw that the explorer.exe is missing. I ran it with the Task Manager, and it made the computer reboot the wrong way. When it did, it did not go to the desktop it just showed black screen with the little "-" on the top left and couldn't do anything and the buffer is barely doing anything, you know, when you open a program, the light flashes rapidly and making noises,

He took it home tonight because its being playing up over the past week and yesterday it refused to boot xp. He tried the recovery console himself and im not sure what he did but upon starting the computer up xp immediately jumps into "reinstalling windows" at the install stage. It gets down to 33 minutes and the computer restarts and repeats the whole process. I cant format the drive as theres important work on it and im not going to be able to take my computer home till next weekend. I was hoping someone could offer an alternative solution to a format?

Let's see... I'm running a Pentium 4 (1.7 GHz) on an Intel D845GBV motherboard, with 512 MB of RAM. As for the operating system, I'm running Windows XP SP1, build 2600. I generally make it a point to keep up with Windows Update. I have both a BIOS password and a Windows password on my computer. About one out of every ten times I boot I run into problems: I enter my BIOS password with no problems, but then when Windows starts up I lose USB support. Nothing I've done has fixed the problem, which includes unplugging the keyboard (or the Biopod USB biometric scanner I have) and plugging it back up, checking the drivers, making sure I have the latest updates, and scanning for viruses/malware. A restart is the only thing that resolves the problem.
