Start Programs Dont Open - Freezes Up - Programs Unstable
Jun 5, 2005
I was checking my daughters pc for some usual maintenance. The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?
I have been having a problem and nothing seems to fix it. This is a little hard to explain, but here goes: When I uninstall something the folder is still in the All Programs Menu. It contains that generic type of icon that means the program is not there. If I attempt to click on these empty folders, the sound mutes and the computer freezes. This can also happen if I click something on the desk top a certain way (sort of too fast) but this is rare.
After launching Start Menu and then All Programs button my PC will freeze up if I move my mouse off of the Program columns to desktop on the right.I did not have this problem when the PC was new. I believe it happen after a automatic download
I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?
All programs like wmp, winamp cd rippers, cdburnerxp pro3,ect do not work when it comes to playing or ripping cda music files. I think there is a problem with the mci cd audio driver.I cant figure out how to change it or where to load the cd audio driver for windows xp home.
I have Xp and i just installed a bunch of new programs and when i go into the start all programs menu there all highlighted in that orange tint and even after clicking the shortcuts they still stay like that is there a way how to get rid of it
on starting up pc the task bar freezes for approx 15mins & only the egg timer is showing, can access desktop icons, however not all programs launch on task bar. what appears to be the issue, is it hardware or software
recently have had issues with the system freezing. It's usually when I have Trillian running, with another program or two at the same time. Like Office or Napster or both. The entire system freezes, where I can't even hit ctrl-alt-del to close on of the programs. I am on Windows XP on an HP Pavilion Laptop. This is a very recent development...and I'm not sure if somehow something has been downloaded to cause this. The only new program installed was The Sims.
From what I can tell, some sort of weird security messure is in place. Whenever I try to open any programs the computer simply does not respond. When I right click on links/programs I have the option "Run As".Clicking that brings the attached dialog up.If I unclick "protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" I can run the program.Someone please tell me how to turn this #### thing off!!
When I right click on a file and select "open with" there is a program on the list that I do not have anymore which is adobe acrobat reader 5.0. I have XP home.
When I start up my computer, everything's fine. afeter a while, when i go to open a prgogram, like Internet Explorer, an error message pops up. It says "Insuffecient System Resources Exist to comlete the requested service". Then i have to restart my computer to be able to run anything. When I go to shutdown my computer, and error message reading "MODSCONF.EXE - DLL INITIALIZATION FAILED" pops up. When i press "ok" another pops up reading "FXDXSSVC.EXE - DLL INITIALIZATION FAILED". Then, when i press ok on that one, the MODSCONF one pops up, and the whole thing repeats itself. So i have to hold the power button to shut it down.
I can't open any programs in do home. I can open Task Manager but no apps ever appear. I can run programs in safe mode. I have run safe mode. I ran chkdsk /r. Emptied the temp folder. Any suggestions on how to make my programs open again?
I've got xp sp2 and it's running just fine. The only problem is that it takes 5-10 seconds to open any program from a desktop shortcuts(AVG,Spyboot,Nero, Winamp). It is not a big deal but maybe somebody have some simple solution. This had been happening for the last couple of years and a few months ago I reinstalled Windows(clean install) but nothing changed.
I have a file with a non-windows extension (.LUP to be precise) which doesn't have an associated Windows-specific program. I have got a program called HexEdit (simple Hex and ASCII editor) which I didn't install (since it came from a colleague in a folder with just the .exe and files needed to run the program) and so Windows didn't populate the "Open With" programs menu with the program. When I try to add it (by Browsing for the .exe in the "Open With" menu) I click on the .exe, and click "OK" yet it doesn't get added to the list. I then tried to add the shortcut to the program to this list, but then I get the error message "[This program] is not a valid Win32 application". I've added the shortcut to the Programs folder in the Start Menu, yet still to no avail. So my 2 questions are: 1) How can I get rid of the shortcut which has now appeared in the "Open With" programs menu? and 2) Is there a way to get this .exe file to appear in this list (possibly by some Registry hack) without installing any 3rd-party programs (since IT at the company I work at gets really shirty about that sort of thing)?
After using Dr.Web Cleant it to clean up my xp laptop, it got worst. The laptop loads up but all that i see is the desktop background. No Start bar, not programs on desktop, shortcuts don't work .e. "windows"+R, "windows"+E) ONLY TASK MANAGER OPENS with CRTL+ALT+DEL.
I admit it...I moved my startup folder from C drive to D and now I am dead in the water. The computer is a Sony PCV RS420 with Windows XP Home Edition with all the updates. When I start the comp. I get "SONY" on the screen and thats it. Unresponsive to all F commands.
I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?
Thought I'd clean up my system by getting rid of programs I no longer want or use. Only problem is Add or Remove programs refuses to open. I did get it to open once but even after 3 minutes the screen stayed blank. So I thought close it and reopen, except I cant't get it to open.
We had a virus. We believe Norton cleaned it. Now, it seems as though many Windows components are gone. The backup we did with Norton most recently won't work to restore. We don't have the original discs that came with computer -- we didn't know that we should have paid Best Buy extra to get them. I can't seem to find anything on the Microsoft site to help. I'm running Windows XP Media Center edition Version 2002 SP3
I am running Toshiba Laptop with XP Home Edition (with SP2 added on).I have 2 programs (PowerQuest Drive Image, and Partition Magic), that I have tried to remove via "Add/Remove" programs, problems is they won't remove! How do I do it and get rid of them? I want to use Acronis True Image instead of Drive Image and also their Disk Director suite if necessary to repartition
For the last few weeks, I get a security warning msg when I open certain programs. It says something about it being from an unknown publisher and am I sure I want to open it. It's really annoying... I've been using these programs for yrs. Can't it at least remember my answer when I say yes and not ask every time I open them? Anyway, this has only started happening recently, so I'm sure it's the result of some setting that has been changed by a Windows update. I looked in the Control Panel under Security Center, but that only seems to deal w/ internet security. So how can I turn this off?
Running Windows XP Pro SP2... I don't know what happened, but when I click on any shortcut to a program, Adobe Reader tries to open it and then tells me it's not a supported type. I wanted to do a System Restore to go back to before this started happening, but Adobe is trying to open System Restore as well! I wanted to remove Adobe altogether to try to fix this, but I can't open Add/Remove Programs in control panel, because Adobe tries to open this
We ran into a a clash with a bunch of viruses before, mostly recovered from those, but now when I try to open the c: drive i mean when i double click on C driver to open. It gives a window of "Opens Program With" I dont know what to do .
About a month ago, something strange began happening on my computer. After the desktop icons and the system tray icons have loaded (they havent been updated or changed for a long time), it's seems like some other process is being loaded or run which I cannot see. When this is happening, I cannot open any programs including IE for several - maybe up to 30 or even 60 - seconds while my computer does "something".
For the first couple of weeks, I could open IE after systray progs loaded, but as soon as opening IE something invisible would steal the focus of the IE window. This behavior then turned into it's current state a couple of weeks ago, which is that I can't open anything at all for quite some time after systray loads. If I try clicking on any programs to open them, then after my computer comes back from whatever it's doing, all the progs will open up for as many times as I clicked on them. I would like to clear this up for convienece sake but more importantly to make sure there's not something invasive going on with my computer.
I am using Windows XP Pro,IntelP4,1gig DDR memory and 160gig HD. After returning from a 45day Vacation my system is doing odd things. It dosen't matter whether I use Outlook or Outlook Express, I can not open or go to any links in the body of the message. I get an error saying I do not have permission and should contact my administrator. I am signed on as the administrator.
Media player is trying to open all programs on my computer, how do i reset defaults for this. I can't even get to add remove programs it tries to open this also. all i can do is get online.
I am working on my mother in laws computer so I am not sure what happened when the errors first started happening. She has a Dell and is running XP home edition. When I got the computer and booted it up, I got the following errors:
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal and iastor.sys address F861A25F base at F860B000 date stamp 42b2df42. At this point I could not boot up at all, not even in safe mode.
Using Windows 2000pro.. Add/Remove Programs will not open in control panel..Tried the fix suggested by Microsoft to no avail.. Also tried letting Windows Setup repair itself. Still no go
