We ran into a a clash with a bunch of viruses before, mostly recovered from those, but now when I try to open the c: drive i mean when i double click on C driver to open. It gives a window of "Opens Program With" I dont know what to do .

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file.There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server.What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.
What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior.Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.
I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department.
Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?

When I do this same thing, "Search" is in bold and at the top. What have I done and how do I undo it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a few years old now.It runs on Windows XP .Its a Sony Vaio PCV-LX2.The Cd drive has been playing up for ages now but i got some help on here with another problem so i thought id see if i could get any help on this.If i open the Cd drive then it will keep opening and closing on its own accord. So trying to burn a CD is hard. Even if i dont try and open it and the computer is on and no one is using it the cd drive will just open and close when it wants.

View 3 Replies View RelatedA while ago I posted on this group a question as to why the "C Drive" contents page opens whilst Windows Xp was booting up. The answer I was told was to do with SP2 and that a short trip round the registry would cure it. Well I did that, but the page still opened, so I thought I'd just have to live with it, but it is getting frustratingly annoying. It really slows everything down and it's the last thing to load up. Once that window opens I can then "use" the computer, as nothing will load until that opens.

Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
From what I can tell, some sort of weird security messure is in place. Whenever I try to open any programs the computer simply does not respond. When I right click on links/programs I have the option "Run As".Clicking that brings the attached dialog up.If I unclick "protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" I can run the program.Someone please tell me how to turn this #### thing off!!

When I start up my computer, everything's fine. afeter a while, when i go to open a prgogram, like Internet Explorer, an error message pops up. It says "Insuffecient System Resources Exist to comlete the requested service". Then i have to restart my computer to be able to run anything.When I go to shutdown my computer, and error message reading "MODSCONF.EXE - DLL INITIALIZATION FAILED" pops up. When i press "ok" another pops up reading "FXDXSSVC.EXE - DLL INITIALIZATION FAILED". Then, when i press ok on that one, the MODSCONF one pops up, and the whole thing repeats itself. So i have to hold the power button to shut it down.

The only problem is that it takes 5-10 seconds to open any program from a desktop shortcuts(AVG,Spyboot,Nero, Winamp).It is not a big deal but maybe somebody have some simple solution. View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a file with a non-windows extension (.LUP to be precise) which doesn't have an associated Windows-specific program. I have got a program called HexEdit (simple Hex and ASCII editor) which I didn't install (since it came from a colleague in a folder with just the .exe and files needed to run the program) and so Windows didn't populate the "Open With" programs menu with the program. When I try to add it (by Browsing for the .exe in the "Open With" menu) I click on the .exe, and click "OK" yet it doesn't get added to the list. I then tried to add the shortcut to the program to this list, but then I get the error message "[This program] is not a valid Win32 application". I've added the shortcut to the Programs folder in the Start Menu, yet still to no avail.So my 2 questions are: 1) How can I get rid of the shortcut which has now appeared in the "Open With" programs menu? and 2) Is there a way to get this .exe file to appear in this list (possibly by some Registry hack) without installing any 3rd-party programs (since IT at the company I work at gets really shirty about that sort of thing)?

It says something about it being from an unknown publisher and am I sure I want to open it. It's really annoying... I've been using these programs for yrs. Can't it at least remember my answer when I say yes and not ask every time I open them?
