Search Option Opens Up By Default Instead Of The Open Option
Aug 10, 2006
I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
i am using windows xp home edition, and for the past last 1 week, whenever i try to open any folder by double clicking a search page opens same as search in start menu, n when i right click the folder i found dat d first option dat should have been 'open' was now changed to search, n dis is d case with all d folders n my drive too.
When I open "My Computer" and then click to open one of the local or mapped drives, instead of opening that drive I get a "Search" window launched. I can open the drives by right clicking and selecting "Open", but I'd much rather just be able to open them normally! The strange thing (to me, anyway) is that this only happens in "My Computer" - not in any other folder or window...
when you hit start, there is the options on the right side (run, search, my comp, control panel, etc), and I seem to have lost the Search thing. I click on it and nothing happens...I click again nothing happens. I reboot, click again nothing happens Yet if I go into My Computer, I can search there but I want to search where it says Search. XP Home SP2 and I have tried "Right click on your start button choose properties then start menu customize.then advanced. Scroll down under the network settings and make sure the box for "Search" has a checkmark in it. Uncheck it reboot and then checkmark it again"
I recenlty got rid of a trojan virus; interestingly ESET didn't detect it at first; I got two aanti malware downolads from the forum that detected and got rid of them. One was super Malware and the other was MBAM< Both terrific.I am stil lleft with a pop up No Disk etc etc but will have to get you thta info later as now my search window is not functioning properly and I need to tade care of that.
All the folders on my computer are now opening into a new window with the Search function. I have to right-click and choose open to get into my folders. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
im having this two problems.search option in start menu is not functioning as well as my system restore.i wasnt able to fully explain in words so ive decided to attach it.
Dont know why but when i click or double-click de hard-Drive (C:, D:,) the search open automatically.. the only way to enter is right-click and choose open.i notice when i right-click the drive , the menu has the search in black and not the open. how can i edit and set the open the default or reset it.
Since I can "eject" the cd through right-clicking on the drive in my computer, i was wondering if there is an "open" feature, since my new case has drive cover, like the example below:[img]http://images1.chiefvalue.com/productimage/11-212-031-04.jpgp/img]since i have an old DVD drive the button is place differently from the button placed on the case, so i'm thinking of alternatives ways in opening the drive or if there's an easier way to approach this.what do all the function keys mean anyway? (F1-F12)
I changed a setting on the folders options to allow me to see program file extensions on power point files. After I did this, I tried to open a folder in my documents. Instead of opening the folder, it opened a search que. Now I can not get windows to open the folder instead of a search que. how to fix it?
when i double click on "My Computer" in the desktop it opens with the "folders" part open on the standard buttons i.e its just like right clicking and exploring. plus i also realised that right clicking on my computer has the explore option first, and then comes open. And also, when i double click on any of my drives in the "my computer" it pops up an error, and the right click option is again wierd, but different this time, the 1st option is autoplay, then comes open, then search then explore. The drive doesnt open with "open" and "autoplay" but only opens with exploring and not only , but the drive opens in a new window.
For some reason, the default choice for when I double-click any of my drives (C:, A:, D:, E:, F: ) (hard drives and removable) is search instead of openNote: This isn't the case if I am trying to Open... or Save as... in any executable.I only want to change the default option to Open again (or Explore if I am using Windows Explorer), but I have tried many things with no results (From folder options to drive properties to many things in the Control Panel
I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
I have a mapped drive on the network and when I access if from the My Computer window I get the Open With window asking me what program to use. But if I right click it and choose explorer then it opens.
Whenever i doubleclick on any of the Drives(C: , D: ) a windows search window appears, if i have to open i have to rightclick and select open...also i observed that when i right click on my c drive or d drive the first option i have is "search" in bold. and then the next option is open. whereas for anyother folder open is my first option when i right click and in bold!
I am having a problem starting my windows xp. Each time I try I get a screen with blk print and white writing that tells me windows was unable to open normally and gives me options to open windows in safe mode, etc. I scanned with hijackthis and it seems I have a lot of questionable files
i am having a couple of problems my help and support will not work say system service not running , i have some copy disks that you have to go to my computer and open the cd drive but all i get when i try to open it there is a key next to it saying safe mode and it will not open.
When I attempt to play or stream music from a web site, I no longer have the options of "open, save, cancel", I only have the options of "save" or "cancel." The dialog box indicates that "m3u" or m3ulist" files are an unknown type.. This wasn't always the case, at one point things worked just fine. How do I get my computer to recognize and "open" these files without having to "save" them and play them from the saved file? Once saved, they will play in Windows Media Player.
here a stumper for me. . . maybe one of you knows how to fix it...when in my computer, if i double click on any of the drives, it opens up a search window instead of opening the folder! its sooo annoying. I have to right click and select 'open' every time. if i right click, the menu opens there and 'search' is on the top in bold instead of 'open'.
I have accidentally changed the program a file opens with. It was a macro program and I went to delete it and it changed all of my files related to it, and now i can't open them. I downloaded it again but it still opened with the same program. How can i get it to open again?
Whenever I open my "C" Drive it opens to "Search" instead of displaying: Documents and Settings, Program Files, etc. Right click on your C drive and my guess is that "Open" will be in bold and at the top of the list. When I do this same thing, "Search" is in bold and at the top. What have I done and how do I undo it?

I seem to be getting more little boxes with a Red X in them when on the internet than I ever did before. When I right click on the X and click the 'show picture option' in the popup nothing happens on basement computer which has a new hard drive and WXP-Pro SP2. Rarely happens on upstairs computer or laptop and right clicking usually brings up the pic. I am asking 'where to look for what could be causing this'.
I don't know why, but every time I double click on a HDD, a device with removable storage or a CD drive, the search window comes up. Which means I have to right click it and go to 'Open
