View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
Way for me to change the logon option setting to Ctrl-Alt-Del? In W2K there was an easy checkbox setting in users from the control panel. And upgrading to WXP kept that setting. With WinXP preinstalled in a notebook, the logon screen comes up immediately from power up. I would like to require the intermediate step of manually pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del keys before the logon screen appears. I'm willing to reinstall W2K first and then reinstalling WXP as I also want to replace the existing notebook hdd with another larger capacity drive if I cannot find an acceptable answer soon.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm going to create 30+ user accounts. They will be all running at the same time, running the same program. (the only way I've figured out how to dual-boot the same program) and I was wondering... Is there anyway to make it somehow use less resources doing so? Like, so far I've gone into Advanced > Performance and killed the switch on everything. I was just wondering, after days of running non-stop, it is bound to start eating up RAM or even cache to much, right? If so, what can I do to stretch the time this happens in? What else can I switch off/disable for each user to eat up less resources?

When I right click on the X and click the 'show picture option' in the popup nothing happens on basement computer which has a new hard drive and WXP-Pro SP2. Rarely happens on upstairs computer or laptop and right clicking usually brings up the pic. I am asking 'where to look for what could be causing this'.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm sure this has been posted on here before, but bear with me because I didn't know what to search under to find this answerDuring my system boot-up, I have the option to choose from 2 different Windows XP's. The one that I boot-up off of is on my smaller hard drive, which just has Windows on it. I have a now non-existent version of Windows on my main hard drive which was put on there when I was fooling around in college, and apparently I never properly got rid of the OS on my main hard drive.

My situation is a little unique so I have some questions. Here's what I want to do.I have 2 floors in my building, the first floor being the warehouse and the second floor being my office. I want to have a desktop on the 1st floor that will not move and a notebook in my office (2nd floor) that I will be taking in and out of the office, or working with when I'm not in the warehouse. The 1st floor PC will have Windows XP Pro (I'm buying it this week), the one on the 2nd floor has XP Home. Both should have identical copies of the software that I'll be using.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled win xp pro sp2 on my old desktop (dell optiplex GX1). The only problem (it's more of an annoyance than a problem) is that on the advanced tab of the Power Options Properties I do not get any power button options. In my previous installation I was getting those options and I had configured it so that pressing the power button for less than 4secs it would put the system in hybernation mode. Is anybody aware of any registry tweak that will enable the power button options? (I really wouldn't want to go through the installation all over again).
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter fighting with a sequence of problems seemingly caused by malware, I finally bit the bullet and reinstalled XP. Now Laptop will no longer give me the option of Hibernating on Shutdown. When I entered "POWERCFG /HIBERNATE/ ON" it tells me SYSTEM DOES NOT SUPPORT HIBERNATION! It did before the reinstall. It wouldn't be a BFD if I didn't run my HP pavilion only on batteries. It was very convenient to hibernate when one battery ran down, while I put the other one in. (Why do I only run on batteries? -- after spending $$$ to replace the HP DC jack, I decided not to do it again when the new one failed --- no I didn't ever yank the cord out and no one else uses the machine.)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got a new motherboard and wanted to reformat one of my hard drives so I could actually get into Windows but when I boot from the disk the Windows Setup gives me no option to format or install Windows. It just starts loading files, then it restarts the computer. If I try to boot without the WinXP cd it starts to load windows then blue screens because I got a different motherboard than my hard drives are used to, even in safe mode it will crash and restart. The new motherboard I got is an ECS Elitegroup GF8200A Black Series, the old one is an ASRock ALive NF6G-VSTA. My processor is an AMD Phenom 9650, I have a 650 Watt PSU, an XFX GeForce 9600 GSO, and 4 GB of RAM. The HDD I am trying to reformat is an 80 gb Maxtor, my main is a 200 GB Seagate but I don't want to reformat that one because it has all of my things on it. Any help regarding either reformatting the one hard drive or making it possible for me to boot into Windows on my main hard drive to install the neessary drivers for this new motherboard.

I'm using a fairly new install of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop.
Clicking on "New Connection Wizard", then select the "Connect to my
Workplace" option which would normally allow me to create a VPN connection,
is greyed out.
I've googled on this problem and found issues suggesting that
1. XP SP1 be re-installed (I'm upto SP2, which I've tried re-installing
without success)
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionTelephony be
deleted (have tried this, rebooted, no success)
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesRasManPPPEAP25
and 26 (tried this, rebooted, no success)
4. Find SR.INF and re-install (tried, rebooted, no change)
Having tried all of the above, I've had no joy at all. The VPN option in
"New Connection Wizard" remains greyed out.
The problem did appear to begin when I did a System Restore after a bad s/w
installation.
In addition - when I try to re-start the Remote Access Connection Manager
Service I receive Error 5: Access is Denied. I'm logged on as a Local
Administrator. I believe this is related.
On the Mozilla Firefox browser I have a blank toolbar right below the two toolbars that I specified. The deletion option is not there. How would I get rid of that extra toolbar
