Boot Up / Get Screen Where Select The User Name And Enter The Password

Jan 27, 2005

When booting up (XP), I get to the screen where I select the user name and enter the password. Then I get my usual wallpaper screen but no icons, start button, task bar, tray etc etc. I can't right click on the screen.

I CAN do Crtl+Alt+Del and get a run prompt up and browse the various drives (and even run software through this, e.g. internet) but the desktop is always completely blank. I have tried Safe Mode and restore last known good etc but neither works both same result, get to wallpaper but no icons.

Users Enter User Name And Password To Use Computer

Sep 8, 2006

If you want to go straight to the Desktop, go to Start>Run and type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes. Then select your account from the list, and uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". I tried to the user enter a username and password I unmark it but it couldn't type anything on it. Bob Augello isn't highlight either.

Logo Screen - No Users Available To Select

Apr 21, 2007

I boot my computer up and its fine till it reaches the logon screen. There are no users to select to logon let alone the shutdown button. Now I have changed the logon screen from its default one, however, It worked fine for almost a year... so i really doubt thats the problem.
Due to this problem I Installed XP Home [running as dual boot] so that i may fix the problem. XP Home works fine and i tried to replace the XP Pro Logonui.exe with the XP Home one. I also went into the recovery console and replaced the ntldr and ntdetect files. None of these worked and i still have the same problem. I would like to avoid reformatting simply because I have vital information that i would like to keep.

Cannot Select Standby Icon From Shutdown Menu

Jul 19, 2005

I am running Windows XP SP2 on a Toshiba laptop. Recently, I cannot select the standby icon from my shutdown menu (i.e. it appears, but is not highlighted). While this does not seem like such a serious issue, I am concerned it may be a sign of a larger problem. I have not had a crash however, so I do not know why the sudden change. I would prefer not to do a system restore, if there is another option. I also could not see any simple solution in the power management settings.

Reboot Or Select Appropriate Boot Device

Jan 11, 2007

I just changed cases for my computer and now when I start it you hear 1 beep (i have AMI BIOS) It then goes to what looks like a command and then the message Reboot or select appropriate boot device or insert boot media pops up. I have checked all my connections and tried it every which way. I have went inside and out of the BIOS and still no luck. I have also tried reinstalling Windows XP, but it says restart the computer and when I do it doesn't continue the installer. Instead it says reboot or select appropriate boot device or insert boot. I also get the error of Overclocking Error.I have a 2.79 Pentium 4 HyperThreading processor, ASUS P4S800D-X, ATI X800XL AGP, Tech-link 425w PSU, 3 sticks Kingston 512mb 333mhz PC3200 RAM, Samsung Spinpoint 120GB ATA hard drive, LG DVD-RW-DL burner, and a standard floppy.

System Late Boot Up After Select User Account

Dec 9, 2007

Hallo. Time going by, I have noticed I have installed quite some applications on my computer.I have Win XP SP2, Intel Pentium4 CPU - 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM (SSD), ATI Radeon X300 Series. I notice that booting is taking really long after I select my user account and I hear a lot of hard disk activity. I believe this can be because virtual RAM is activated, but, before going to buy some extra RAM (and SSD memories are not so cheap), I wondered if I could have fixed the issue through some start up software, or some better organisation of the user accounts (e.g. one account for gaming, one for video processing) so that only the requested processes would be loaded each time.

Option Of Hibernating On Shutdown

Nov 22, 2009

After fighting with a sequence of problems seemingly caused by malware, I finally bit the bullet and reinstalled XP. Now Laptop will no longer give me the option of Hibernating on Shutdown. When I entered "POWERCFG /HIBERNATE/ ON" it tells me SYSTEM DOES NOT SUPPORT HIBERNATION! It did before the reinstall. It wouldn't be a BFD if I didn't run my HP pavilion only on batteries. It was very convenient to hibernate when one battery ran down, while I put the other one in. (Why do I only run on batteries? -- after spending $$$ to replace the HP DC jack, I decided not to do it again when the new one failed --- no I didn't ever yank the cord out and no one else uses the machine.)

Reboot Instead Of Shutdown

Oct 13, 2009

I would say about half a dozen times in the past few weeks when I tried to turn off my pc the computer rebooted and I had to tell it to shut down again. It always shut down on the second try.I did install an ATI graphics card recently, could that have something to do with it?Like I said it has only happened a few times so it's not that big of a deal, just kind of annoying. Anyone dealt with this before?

Users Change Password?

May 16, 2006

I currently have windows xp home addition. The one that came with my Dell computer. I put an account on for my friend. I know him very well and trust him. I just have issues with people on my computer due to things happening in the past. Just by this alone I should have not put him on then. I gave him a limited account. But he has blocked me from seeing what he has downloaded and such. I don't really care too much in the nosey sense but I like to know all of the goings on on my computer. I don't think that is unreasonable. I just want to make sure that nothing goes wrong with this computer. Porn is ok on here I just want to make sure that nothing illegal is going on. Is there anyway to look into his account without deleting it or changing the password. I am not looking to go through all of his files. Just check on the downloads and such.

Find Or Bypass Limited User Password W/out Reset Or Adjust User Screensaver?

Dec 27, 2005

For security reasons, Microsoft does not allow parents (computer administrators) to check on, maintain, adjust or otherwise enter their kids' (limited users) XP profiles without either resetting their passwords or waiting for them to come home and being confrontational about it.Ideally I would like to be able to log on to a limited user account from my administrator account without tampering with anyone's passwords-resetting them or otherwise. Actually, I have little interest in the (step) kids' personal life and stuff. Alternately, perhaps you may help me with my ultimate goal: limiting screensaver activity:

MCE 2005 Won't Reboot Or Shutdown

So I just reformatted last night and installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Since installing it, I haven't been able to restart or shut down. The computer gets stuck on the background (no icons and taskbar). I don't even get to the blue screen that says it's saving settings and shutting down. Is there something I'm missing? I'm going to try starting up the computer with nothing selected in the msconfig and see if that fixes it. I'm 99% sure the problem occurred even before I installed drivers and such, but I'm running a Dell Inspiron E1505 with ATI Mobility X1400.

Restart And Reboot System Shutdown

Apr 29, 2008

I'm not too knowledgeable about the technical side of computing, so please bear with me.I'm running Windows XP Professional (SP2) on an AMD Athlon XP 3200+. My grandson showed me a game called Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which I fell in love with and subsequently bought for my own computer. As I only had 'on board' graphics, the game obviously wouldn't run, so I bought an Nvidia 6200 graphics card.Following the instructions which came with it, I installed the card successfully. The only thing I couldn't do was disable the 'on board' graphics, but as my computer recognised the new card automatically, I went ahead and installed the driver. The new card didn't need an extra power source, as there was no connector on it. Incidentally, I did find the 'on board' graphics in the System > Properties list, but nothing happens when I click on it, so I assume I can't disable it.

Everything appeared to work well and I got the Roller Coaster game up and running beautifully. Some time later, after I had closed the game and gone on to other things, I needed to restart my computer, so I went through the usual restart sequence.Things went well at first but some way through the Windows XP loading screen, where the little blue bars scroll across, my computer simply switched off, totally! I tried again (obviously from a cold boot this time), but the same thing happened. To cut a long story short, I eventually removed the new card, and restored my system to a safe point, and it's now running perfectly again, although I can't play my game now.I'd be really grateful for any advice you can offer as to what the problem might be, as I want to build some more roller coasters!

Users Password Error - Cannot Get Command Prompt

Aug 9, 2007

I have looked at the answers you have given for this subject, and none seem to apply to me. I lost my boot disks in the hurricane, and my son has somehow changed all the passwords, including the administrator one, and then locked the computer. When I reboot, even in safe mode, I come immediately to the "Control-Alt-Delete" screen. We have tried every password we could think of, and the users now just get the error that we've been locked out. I have tried every Administrator password I would have set, including no password at all, to no avail. So I cannot get to a command prompt even from Safe Mode.

Honestly, I would be happy to just reformat, but I can't even get to the DOS prompt, and I don't have a DOS reboot disk for this computer (lost too!). No other computers are running that version of XP, so I can't make one from one of those either.

Desktop Blank After Bootup From Either Reboot/shutdown

Nov 24, 2007

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying there are updates for your computer(it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs. Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware.Just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.
