when the system boots, many of the icons do not appear in the system tray. most of the time, only the Mcafee security center is running in the system tray, and the wireless network and local area connection icons are there, with nothing else appearing. what should appear is the battery meter icon (thats probably the most annoying thing), the volume icon, AVG free edition, nokia pc suite, dell quickset, dell support, microsoft spyware, and the winamp tray icon.

System boots fine to XP PRO. When I try and access files on C: drive ( OS is on F: drive), I get an error that the HARD DRIVE IS NOT FORMATED? I cannot access any file on C: drive at all. I tried running DEFRAG on this drive and get an error about 2 files that non readable, etc. How can I access the drive to delete the files, I tried SAFE MODE but same problem. Norton shows no virus?

This is a very serious situation for me. I have XP/sp2/608ram. 11 days prior to the problem I upgraded from 128 + 512 ram as well as upgraded to a LG 16x Super Multi DVD/CD rewriter. Everything ran fine. Just noting. Thursday I bought and installed a wireless router. When booting down there was a hissing/crackling noise from the subwoofer, and consequently the subwoofer died. Saturday afternoon, while listening to winamp media stream, the system suddenly informed me that windows was logging off. It then at random intervals continuously rebooted. Only by turning off my surge protector was I able to stop it from happening. While trying to troubleshoot the problem I have determined that it usually occurs within 45min-1 1/2 hours after turning on the system ( except for a couple of instances where it stayed on for 5 1/2 hours and a different instance in which it started to boot down after 7 min.) I also while attempting to post this the first time booted down my machine to off mode. Several minutes past and the machine booted up again to begin the cycle of hell. I have Freedom anti-virus, which detects nothing. In closing, I'm desperate for some feedback as I am new to Montreal and don't know any shops that I know and can trust and so I am therefore reduced to take it to futureshop.

every time I start my computer, system restore boots up. That is, the system restore page appears and thus I have to close it before I can do anything on my computer. So, my question is.. how can I get it to stop booting up as soon as I turn on my computer?

This all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.

I had some failure and have recovered everything and upgraded to SP2.However, now after the POST as we go to load windows it tells me tohighlight which O/S I want to use.I always take the first (Windows XP Home Edition) and it boots andoperates fine. However, the second choice is also Window XP HomeEdition and if I take it it tells me there is a disk hardware error and it cannot boot.

I recently upgraded my System from P3 to P4, also added a new 120GB SATA Hard Drive which I kept as a Primary Master.I also attached my old 40GB IDE hard drive which is the secondary master. I had installed Windows XP Pro on the IDE HDD and now have installed the same O.S. on the new drive also. In my old system which also had two hard drives (both IDE drives) I used to get a boot option. But with the SATA + IDE combination the boot option has disappeared and it boots directly from the SATA Drive.

I have 2 errors which are shutting down my pc several times a day. The only info' I have is that they are events 700 and 7023. After reading your answers to an earlier query on this subject, I tried to disable the reboot due to system failure option but with no success, it just ignored me.

Error on boot: we apologise for the inconvience but windows did not start successfully a recent hardware or software change might have caused this if your computer stopped responding restarted unexpectally or automatically shut down to protect your files and folders choose your last known good configuration: 1. boot in safe mode 2. boot in safe mode with networking 3. boot in safe mode with command prompt. Any option i choose it goes to boot screen comes up and restarts and the same error as the one above comes up.

I have some hidden files on my pc. To view these files I click on a folder (any folder does it) click on tools, scroll down to options and change the setting to 'view hidden files'.But he has left my pc in a state such that when I go to tools the only options there are: 'map network drive', 'disconnect network drive', and 'synchronize'. It's as if my computer is on a network but it actually isn't.

Running XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP 2 I created several CD on our old computer running Win 98SE using autorun.inf file to automatically open an *.html page containing an index of the contains of the CD(s). The autorun.inf on those CDs don't work on any of our XP computers. The CDs are recognized easily by these computers running XP but won't open the autorun.inf files.
Nowww do note autorun CDs that come with programs, that we buy, run with no trouble which means the autorun option is definitely on. I have even copied the autorun.inf files from program/purchased CDs and changed the file to open name to the *.html file on the CDs and still they won't work. Again do note these CDs with autorun.inf that I created easily run on all our Win98 computers.

All of a sudden, in the last couple of days, I find that I have to go through my Start>Turn off Computer > Restart twice in order for the computer to restart. Unfortunately, I've made a LOT of changes in the past few days (new programs, a system restore, windows registry cleanup, startup configuration changes, etc.) so I have no idea what caused this.
