Jan 7, 2006i am using windows xp home edition, and for the past last 1 week, whenever i try to open any folder by double clicking a search page opens same as search in start menu, n when i right click the folder i found dat d first option dat should have been 'open' was now changed to search, n dis is d case with all d folders n my drive too.

Mar 17, 2007In the last few weeks I have noticed that if I try to search for a file or folder by clicking "Search" on the start menu I am not able to open the search window. I used to be able to do it this way until quite recently. I can however, search by opening a new explorer window and hitting the "Search" button on the tool bar.I have looked on Microsoft KB for a solution and tried repairing it by following Article ID:913503, to no avail. I also tried doing a system restore but no help.The problem has occurred on both my Desktop PC as well as my Laptop.Has anybody else come across this problem, and more importantly found a solution.I'm running XP MCE on both machines, with Norton Internet security on my laptop, and Zonealarm Pro Security Suite on my desktop PC.

The Typical Problem would arise with the Search and Run icons (I have disabled the rest...)A small search in the registry and I managed to identify the "keys" that control the default icons.To change them you need to get in the registry, and that can be done by going to Start > Run (or WinKey+R) and typing "regedit" (yes, without the quotes...)

Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.

Jul 19, 2010i had Win xp sp2 on my hard-drive i installed windows 98 on my remove-able disk... after that i formatted my removeable disk now i just have Win xp but when start up it still shows the os choice menu. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.

Downloaded various virus removers on another computer. Stinger indicated clear as did Microsoft Malicious Sotware Removal Package (August version). Macafee's bremove and kremove both stalled out. Now what can I do?
