Search Option Opens Up By Default Instead Of The Open Option
Aug 10, 2006I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.

Mar 8, 2005My "Search" fonction does not start. I used it without problems for months but when asked I get now only the first window with the dog and nothing else.When I click ctrl + Alt + Suppr I get: "Search not responding".

Sometime after Windows Update performed an update, I noticed that when I try to run Search (Start, Search), the search app freezes after I type in the file search criteria and click the "search" button". Attempting to close the application results in "this program not responding." and ultimately "You chose to end the nonreponsive program, Windows Explorer." Please Tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report... [Send Error Report] [Don't Send] This is identical to a problem reported on 3/1/2005 but doesn't appear to have a resolution.

Jul 23, 2005when you hit start, there is the options on the right side (run, search, my comp, control panel, etc), and I seem to have lost the Search thing. I click on it and nothing happens...I click again nothing happens. I reboot, click again nothing happens Yet if I go into My Computer, I can search there but I want to search where it says Search. XP Home SP2 and I have tried "Right click on your start button choose properties then start menu customize.then advanced. Scroll down under the network settings and make sure the box for "Search" has a checkmark in it. Uncheck it reboot and then checkmark it again"

Sep 25, 2010Not sure whats up with it. very slow, freezes, stops responding, and when I change from one box to another. like from a title box to a message box I put in a few letters and then cursor stops and disappears. Some times I have to start completely over, some times I just have to left click. I can not watch any videos off the net like utube or any others.

Oct 15, 2008I recenlty got rid of a trojan virus; interestingly ESET didn't detect it at first; I got two aanti malware downolads from the forum that detected and got rid of them. One was super Malware and the other was MBAM< Both terrific.I am stil lleft with a pop up No Disk etc etc but will have to get you thta info later as now my search window is not functioning properly and I need to tade care of that.

Feb 23, 2005I am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

May 6, 2007I need help with Xp freezing in normal mode.Problems I'm having Computer freezes at the welcome(choose profile) screen after 30-60 seconds.If I Immediatly login to my profile, the desktop boots up, but once again freezes.I think it runs for about a minute total before freezing either way.When it freezes the HDD light stops blinking and the scratchy HDD 'reading' sound ceases, but I can still hear it spinning this is constant, not hit and miss(since this began(last evening) I cant get xp to run in normal mode for more than a mintute before freezing)

The system is scanned clean with Norton System Works, AD AWARE, SpyBot Search, Window Washer, etc. but WILL freeze or lock randomly when I am typing a word doc or sending email with Eudora thru my DSL acct. Oct 9, 2006So I just rebuilt my PC, installed XP Home edition and installed the SP2 upgrade. I also installed some basic programs such as Norton Anti-Virus, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender. Since this is a fresh copy, you would think no problems right? Well, for some reason, this operating system just freezes everytime I'm trying to either install updates and other programs. It even freezes sometimes after its booted into the OS! There's no spyware or viruses, so I'm thinking it has to do with the SP2 install. I'm also dual booting with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, which is running fine with no problems. I'm thinking about uninstalling SP2 if this solves the problem.
