I've had several instances where my system loads the devices from theWIN XP Home Oem CD-ROM and then when it gets to "Setup IS StartingWindows," the system hangs and doesn't continue with the install. I have no OS on the system to check any of the drivers/applicationsrunning other than the setup.

In order to make things easier, we want to be able to create a USB pendrive that contains all of the operating systems we want to use and some form of menu to start the installation of each. The problem is, I've not been able to find guides that explain how to do exactly what we want.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI need help with Xp freezing in normal mode.Problems I'm having Computer freezes at the welcome(choose profile) screen after 30-60 seconds.If I Immediatly login to my profile, the desktop boots up, but once again freezes.I think it runs for about a minute total before freezing either way.When it freezes the HDD light stops blinking and the scratchy HDD 'reading' sound ceases, but I can still hear it spinning this is constant, not hit and miss(since this began(last evening) I cant get xp to run in normal mode for more than a mintute before freezing)

I recently restored the operating system (3-4 weeks ago) because of a virus she got. She said she shut down her computer yesterday using start>turn off computer>restart. When the computer went to restart, it freezes completely on the blue "windows is starting" screen immediately before the login screen. The computer was restarted again and froze at the same screen. I tried to have her start in safe-mode and last-known configuration to no avail.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use XP Home on an AMD Athlon 1700 with 1 GB PC 2100 RAM and a 16 mb GeForce vid card on an ABIT KG7 mobo. The system is scanned clean with Norton System Works, AD AWARE, SpyBot Search, Window Washer, etc. but WILL freeze or lock randomly when I am typing a word doc or sending email with Eudora thru my DSL acct. The only way out is to hard reboot. I don’t know what other diagnostics to perform and I want to stop the “freeze” problem. Any ideas about what I can try next?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I just rebuilt my PC, installed XP Home edition and installed the SP2 upgrade. I also installed some basic programs such as Norton Anti-Virus, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender. Since this is a fresh copy, you would think no problems right? Well, for some reason, this operating system just freezes everytime I'm trying to either install updates and other programs. It even freezes sometimes after its booted into the OS! There's no spyware or viruses, so I'm thinking it has to do with the SP2 install. I'm also dual booting with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, which is running fine with no problems. I'm thinking about uninstalling SP2 if this solves the problem.

It freezes at the point where the Windows XP Home logo screen is displayed and always just after the keyboard lights flash (Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights). The boot freezes began happening shortly after I replaced my old CRT monitor with a new Acer AL2016W LCD 20-inch monitor.

In the last 6 months, the cursor started to freeze (not respond to mouse movement) and I had no keyboard or mouse control over XP. I have to hard reboot to regain control of the mouse and keyboard in XP. In addition, any downloads from the web stop as well.In short,the entire XP becomes inaccessible.I use Zone Alarm for my DSL connection and it too STOPS and shows no activity . I have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.
My primary hard drive recently went nuts, so I decided to make my second drive the master. I completely disconnected the former master drive and set the former slave drive as the master. The newer harddrive is 250G and had been added thru XP. I only had some folders with music, video and such saved onto it. I wanted to keep those files so I didn't format the drive. And since they are large I didn't move them off the drive.
Installation proceeded normally until it reached "32 minutes remaining" and showed that it was "setting up network." The system just stays there. (The "new features" messages on the right side of the screen continue to cycle thru their list, and the little progress squares at the lower right continue to flash in sequence.) I had read thru some forums that hardware may be the cause so I removed the following: phone modem card, NIC, graphics card and the sound card. This left me with just the motherboard, floppy drive and cd-rom drive. Rebooted and still freezes at the same spot
I have responded to a question in another conference which asks for help with a failing re-install whith 32 mins to go. and said I would ask in here This happened to me and was sorted by Microsoft help desk (using the last of my 2 free support calls attendant with purchasing a full copy of XP) - by a lady in India and lots of waiting Musak and a high phone bill! - but I can't for the life of me recall the keysrtokes the support lady took me through to "continue the process". After the installation reboots into device configuration and I "ok" the keyboard config, the product key entry page comes up and locks the system. I am befuddled. I have tried booting into safe-mode (can't boot into safe-mode during setup), restarting the installation, running repair on the installation and chkdsk /r. I was able to install a second image to a new system directory. I would rather not rebuild my entire configuration via the second image. Anyone have an idea why the original installation is freezing as indicated?

Let's see so far ive tried everything from different hard drives to taking out all hardware not needed. I've even went online and downloaded killdisk to reformat my drives so that they are completely reformatted. Let's see...every time I try to install xp pro this is what i do. First I go into the bios and redirect the the cd to main boot then my hard drive then my floppy, in that order. I reboot my computer with the xp disc in the drive. Following that I create a new partition and begin the install, it installs all of the files it needs to run xp setup, then it comes to the screen that says it has to reboot, it does and then it comes to "hit any button to boot from cd" I dont hit anything. It continues to the next screen, the loading xp screen, and it always stops loading there and freezes. If someone can help that would be great! Itz driving me crazy, and I really really want to fix this pc myself, instead of bringing it to a comp shop.

It was behaving funny, freezing on startup (after desktop icons loaded) every other reboot or so. I put the latest Via chipset drivers on there, and nVidia video drivers (to get out of 16 color mode) and then the freezing upon boot seemed to stop. Is something somehow messed up in Windows 2000? I'm not sure where to go from here.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

I then tried to install some not-so-genuine copies, but no matter what i use, its the same problem. I tried installing linux and it went fine.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI cannot seem to install SP2. Every time I try, it freezes up somewhere in the middle. I just tried last night, and it never made it past the first message. Something like "Initializing installation". It doesn't sound like the hard drive is doing anything. When I try to cancel the install, it will then freeze on the "Cancelling Installation" message. The only way out is to "End Task". The furthest I got was one time when it seemed to finish installing, but when it rebooted, my system was at 640 x 480 resolution, and still at SP1! I then ran a System Restore and got back to where I originally was, minus a bunch of security patches, even though the point I restored should have already had those patches
Notes:
-When trying to install, I let it run OVERNIGHT, so it has plenty of time to work.)
-System is clean of Spyware, Viruses, etc.
-System performance is pretty good, although I do get an occasional blue screen, hence the reason I'm finally trying to update.
Does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this?
All of the SP2 install guides at windowsreinstall.com link provided in the sticky state that XP Home CD is required, what if I don't have one, I have a Dell-provided "reinstall" CD for XP. Can I still use the same procedures to upgrade to SP2
