I just built a new computer and for now until I get windows 7, I was trying to put 32 bit xp home edition on my 64 bit motherboard.But everytime I try to install, it freezes.
View 24 RepliesI think my windows XP is corrupt. When I am in any browser my computer completely freezes and I have to shut the power off in order to restart. If I reinstall XP will I loose all of my programs, etc. I have never done this before and am a littled worried about doing so. I have done everything else I can think of. My system is clean otherwise, just locks up when browsing.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy names Neil and I'm from Washington state, Ive had problems trying to install xp pro on my computer. Let's see so far ive tried everything from different hard drives to taking out all hardware not needed. I've even went online and downloaded killdisk to reformat my drives so that they are completely reformatted. Let's see...every time I try to install xp pro this is what i do. First I go into the bios and redirect the the cd to main boot then my hard drive then my floppy, in that order. I reboot my computer with the xp disc in the drive. Following that I create a new partition and begin the install, it installs all of the files it needs to run xp setup, then it comes to the screen that says it has to reboot, it does and then it comes to "hit any button to boot from cd" I dont hit anything. It continues to the next screen, the loading xp screen, and it always stops loading there and freezes. If someone can help that would be great! Itz driving me crazy, and I really really want to fix this pc myself, instead of bringing it to a comp shop.

I have tried the CLRT/ALT/DELETE solution and this will not shut the computer down. The only way I can turn it off is pressing the ON/OFF button on the computer tower. View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen i put in teh Win xp disc its starts loading teh file etc.. and then when done after i press enter and "Setup is starting windows" its freezes andi get liek A black dot and a few like patterns on the screen or soemtimes teh screen just goes mad liek with different colourd patterns but ontop of the blue "Setup is starting windows" screen ive checked teh disc and made a copy both work fine checked teh CD rom works fine put a diffremnt cd rom drive in and made no difference cant check ram because my computer doesnt take DDR2. ive put diffrent IDE harddives in with and without a SATA convoertor and the same thing happens with the "Setup is starting windows" also when i start the computer up before i boot from cd or anything after all that without booting from CD i get a BSOD code 0x07B.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install xp on this good friend of mine's machine that took a dive last week. We replaced the motherboard, cpu, and memory. And afterwords for about 3 days, it seemed to function ok. Then it just quit booting. I told him we would need to reinstall windows. I was kind of shocked we did not have to in the first place. Anyways, So now I am trying to reinstall windows:I can get it to boot from the windows cd, it goes through the standard list of drivers, and at the end says, "setup is starting windows"... Then it just hangs there indefinately. Typically after this, you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install windows, then you hit f8 to agree to there stuff, then you get to partition ect. I mention these things so you will know what part I am talking about.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy primary hard drive recently went nuts, so I decided to make my second drive the master. I completely disconnected the former master drive and set the former slave drive as the master. The newer harddrive is 250G and had been added thru XP. I only had some folders with music, video and such saved onto it. I wanted to keep those files so I didn't format the drive. And since they are large I didn't move them off the drive.
Installation proceeded normally until it reached "32 minutes remaining" and showed that it was "setting up network." The system just stays there. (The "new features" messages on the right side of the screen continue to cycle thru their list, and the little progress squares at the lower right continue to flash in sequence.) I had read thru some forums that hardware may be the cause so I removed the following: phone modem card, NIC, graphics card and the sound card. This left me with just the motherboard, floppy drive and cd-rom drive. Rebooted and still freezes at the same spot
I have responded to a question in another conference which asks for help with a failing re-install whith 32 mins to go. and said I would ask in here This happened to me and was sorted by Microsoft help desk (using the last of my 2 free support calls attendant with purchasing a full copy of XP) - by a lady in India and lots of waiting Musak and a high phone bill! - but I can't for the life of me recall the keysrtokes the support lady took me through to "continue the process". View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??
I've had several instances where my system loads the devices from theWIN XP Home Oem CD-ROM and then when it gets to "Setup IS StartingWindows," the system hangs and doesn't continue with the install. I have no OS on the system to check any of the drivers/applicationsrunning other than the setup.

After the installation reboots into device configuration and I "ok" the keyboard config, the product key entry page comes up and locks the system. I am befuddled. I have tried booting into safe-mode (can't boot into safe-mode during setup), restarting the installation, running repair on the installation and chkdsk /r. I was able to install a second image to a new system directory. I would rather not rebuild my entire configuration via the second image. Anyone have an idea why the original installation is freezing as indicated?

On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. I have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.
I have made two clean installs of Windows 2000 Professional today trying to figure out a problem. It all started with my first install. It was behaving funny, freezing on startup (after desktop icons loaded) every other reboot or so. I put the latest Via chipset drivers on there, and nVidia video drivers (to get out of 16 color mode) and then the freezing upon boot seemed to stop. Is something somehow messed up in Windows 2000? I'm not sure where to go from here.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI would really appreciate some advice concerning a troublesome computer.A friend who was running Windows XP on a two-years old computer began to experience occasional freezes and blue screens without any apparent pattern in program or usage. It eventually got so bad that we removed most of his installed software other than the essential, but problems continued. We then made a repair installation of Windows XP from the Dell OS installation disk, after which the computer would fall over every time after initial boot up. With sinking heart (of course, he had no image, but had data backups) we then formatted the hard disk and executed a fresh installation of Windows XP.
Windows now boots but the Windows directories contain very few folders or files. The CD drive can only be read perhaps 50% of the time. Most program installation files refuse to run, but some do. One installation disk which will not run is his internet installation. The computer continues to display sporadic blue screens.Before it goes out the window can anyone suggest our next course of enquiry?

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy themes were all working fine but one unfortunate day i was installing one of the themes and it asked me to reboot from then on am not able to use any of the downloaded themes but i can use the themes i had installed prior to that i can use the themes i installed after that fatal installation. now the problems am facing are if i double click on a windows visual style file the themes (normally a window open with a preview of the theme) i dont get the preview of the new theme but the preview of the previously applied theme. If at all i save all the windows visual file to default themes folder and the go to properties->themes-> i just get a black box in center and if i apply that i get windows classic theme *the other problem is i get shrill noise which is unberable sometimes from the pc. i dunno how to rectify it.

I then tried to install some not-so-genuine copies, but no matter what i use, its the same problem. I tried installing linux and it went fine.

The freezing occurs randomly sometimes it occurs just after startup while other times i can play a game for a few hours before it freezes. Ive been in a repair shop a couple times and they havent solved the problem despite replacing the mother board and power supply. They also reformated the computer and still get the freezing problem. Also when it freezes i turn the power switch off on the back and then i get a noise from the speakers that sounds like someone tapping on a the desk. How can i discover the problem?

I also have no sound and in the control panel it isn't picking up any audio devices. I cant change the theme back to windows xp in properties either it says im using Windows XP (modified). The only computer that can see shared files is my moms with the windows 2000. theres 3 more computers all running windows xp. how do i fix this? File sharing is now available, but I myself believe the internet is being slowed down. THe Internet gateway that windows XP is picking up is reading 8.0 mbps. My connection has gotten as high as like almost 2, but it should not read that.

A few days ago it started having this problem where the entire screen freezes up and I have to turn the computer off and restart. It freezes anywhere from 2 minutes to 4 hours into a session, but it freezes up every time. I don't know if this is related, but every time I restart, I get a message window from an application called Button Manager v1.83, that says: "No INITIO External Storage Device Found" and it has two buttons to click on, either : LED ON or LED OFF. I ran a virus scan, and an adaware scan, but it didn't help. My husband wants to throw out the computer and buy a new one, but there must be a way to fix this. Is it a virus
