Can someone give me some advice on how to remove the automatic restart on my XP SP3 based PC which is continuously rebooting without stopping at the error screen that indicates what the issue is?The error screen is only visible for a second before the reboot begins.Without Windows access to the startup options, is there a way to disable auto restart?
View 6 RepliesAll of a sudden, in the last couple of days, I find that I have to go through my Start>Turn off Computer > Restart twice in order for the computer to restart. Unfortunately, I've made a LOT of changes in the past few days (new programs, a system restore, windows registry cleanup, startup configuration changes, etc.) so I have no idea what caused this.

When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

View 7 Replies View Relatedit usually happens when im like working on it for about 2hrs or something. the pc would go dead, and reboot. or windows would hang, and from the hard disk led, i can see that it is all busy and unavailable. ta ta. its getting on my nerves. i just recovered my system from new.net, and now i have slower internet connection. no nothing wrong with the isp. i suspect there maybe reminents of the old virus still holding back windows. could my fears turn out to be true? i have had the liberty of posting my HJT log here, so do point out anything suspicious and also anything that could slow down the system..
View 1 Replies View Relatedxp pro sp2 automatic updates enabled. My computer restarts automatically after shut down. This happens sometimes immediately, sometimes after a delay of up to 10 minutes. I tried using third party shut down programs, but that did not help. However if I let the computer go into hibernate, it shuts down and does not restart. I do not have Roxio installed, and in the settings for startup and recovery the automatic restart is disabled.

First, I was running the windows disk defragmenter and it took a very very long time to complete. I try to defrag regularly and I know it is not an instantaneous process. But it seems to be unusually slow now and even when it says its completed, it also says there were files it could not defrag. I tried to run defrag in safe mode to see if that would improve the speed and defrag everything. But in safe mode, once it started defragging my entire system shut down. No warning, no nothing. Just all of a sudden a black screen and I had to physically turn the computer back on.

I have a desktop computer that I got about a year ago, it's running XP Pro on Pentium 4 3.2GHz system, has 512 ram and I think a 200Gb HDD. Lately it has been restarting, usually when I try to, eg: listen to music and surf the web, which is nothing strenuous, especially for a computer which I thought was pretty good. All of a sudden though, it has just restarted itself and, and as soon as it gets to the Windows XP loading screen, it restarts again and again. I can never get past the XP loading screen. I have a lot of valuable information on the computer and so I was hoping that someone would be able to help me fix this issue without formatting if possible.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour, so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even boot past the logo screen. I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work . It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact. Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though. I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'

First of all, I will admit to making a couple of mistakes, first I have not backed up ANY data on my hard drive (actually I have 2 on my laptop) and secondly I lost my patience when laptop froze recently and just pulled the plug. Lessons learned!
OK, on booting up the laptop, I get the "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start...blah blah" with the BSOD, which after disabling automatic restart, I could read. BTW none of the safe mode options work, the last known good config.

Whats weird is that I put a disk in my CD, Windows says device is working properly - but won't read the disk. Same thing happens with the floppy. Usually, when my computer booted before this problem occured, it went though normal boot sequence and I could see the light check for CD, and floppy...now it's not doing it. However, the longer I work on a task like a "find and replace", the slower the computer's processing gets and then I run out of virtual memory. When run out of virtual memory, I can no longer save the file.
Is there a way to reset or empty out the memory of my computer system without rebooting the system? I can copy and paste a small amount of text like a comma, but that does not help the memory problem. Edited to correct spelling error.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use XP Media Center, Avast AV, new computer, and I'm an intermediate user. Yesterday, after rebooting the desktop, start menu and taskbar began flashing with a system beep. What I mean by "flashing" is the taskbar and start button would go off, the system would beep, then they return and do it again and again. It is working right now but I'm lucky for that. I ran a virus scan and spyware scan and my system has been cleaned, defragged and a disk scan has been performed (no negative results). When I boot in Safe Mode, it's ok. I did the elimination process through MSConfig and when the services are stopped, the problem is not apparent. Turn them on, and it's there again. Here is my Hijack report below......
View 2 Replies View RelatedI go to start, control panel, click System, then click on Advanced, then Settings for Performance, uncheck Fade or slide menus into view, Show shadows under menus, Show shadows under mouse pointer, Slide taskbar buttons, Smooth edges of screen fonts, then I click on OK and OK again then re-boot and go back to look at the Performance Options and they're checked again :S anyways way to make then not checked for good and not get auto-checked open startup/re-booting?

When logging in, either to the domain or to the local system, the system reboots after the password has been entered. I've tried restoring to an earlier point without any success. I dont have much running when it happened and its only started happening these last couple of days. Its not overheating either. Its strange thou, when the computer locks up it seems like it hasn't, like msn will keep poping up with people and winamp still plays music, I just can't do anything.
