Computer Was Frozen - Continual Reboot

Sep 27, 2005

My kids computer was frozen and I forced a reboot by pressing the restart button expecting the error message about problem shutting down as it scanned the disk for errors. What happened instead was it continually gets partially booted taking me to the boot up options; safe mode, normal start up.I first chose safe mode and the computer started to reboot from the beginning, then normal mode-same thing, last good configuration.Every option I pick, the computer fails to completely reboot and continuously restarts with no intervention of my own.If I could get it to boot on any mode, I may be able to find the problem.

Restart And Reboot System Shutdown

Apr 29, 2008

I'm not too knowledgeable about the technical side of computing, so please bear with me.I'm running Windows XP Professional (SP2) on an AMD Athlon XP 3200+. My grandson showed me a game called Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which I fell in love with and subsequently bought for my own computer. As I only had 'on board' graphics, the game obviously wouldn't run, so I bought an Nvidia 6200 graphics card.Following the instructions which came with it, I installed the card successfully. The only thing I couldn't do was disable the 'on board' graphics, but as my computer recognised the new card automatically, I went ahead and installed the driver. The new card didn't need an extra power source, as there was no connector on it. Incidentally, I did find the 'on board' graphics in the System > Properties list, but nothing happens when I click on it, so I assume I can't disable it.

Everything appeared to work well and I got the Roller Coaster game up and running beautifully. Some time later, after I had closed the game and gone on to other things, I needed to restart my computer, so I went through the usual restart sequence.Things went well at first but some way through the Windows XP loading screen, where the little blue bars scroll across, my computer simply switched off, totally! I tried again (obviously from a cold boot this time), but the same thing happened. To cut a long story short, I eventually removed the new card, and restored my system to a safe point, and it's now running perfectly again, although I can't play my game now.I'd be really grateful for any advice you can offer as to what the problem might be, as I want to build some more roller coasters!

System Error 53 When Accessing Server By Name

Sep 22, 2006

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine. I can connect to remote shares by IP address, but not by name. If I do a Start, Run, \computer it says "The network path was not found."There is no server on this particaular network it's all peer-to-peer, and I've enabled NetBIOS for good luck. Nothing. I cannot ping the other machines by name, either. All other machines in the network run fine.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling components of Network Connections, and TCP/IP is the only protocol installed. I have confirmed that all of the computers are in the same subnet and same work group. There is no firewall software installed on the machine, apart from XP SP2, and I've disabled that.

Reboot Instead Of Shutdown

Oct 13, 2009

I would say about half a dozen times in the past few weeks when I tried to turn off my pc the computer rebooted and I had to tell it to shut down again. It always shut down on the second try.I did install an ATI graphics card recently, could that have something to do with it?Like I said it has only happened a few times so it's not that big of a deal, just kind of annoying. Anyone dealt with this before?

MCE 2005 Won't Reboot Or Shutdown

Sep 13, 2009

So I just reformatted last night and installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Since installing it, I haven't been able to restart or shut down. The computer gets stuck on the background (no icons and taskbar). I don't even get to the blue screen that says it's saving settings and shutting down. Is there something I'm missing? I'm going to try starting up the computer with nothing selected in the msconfig and see if that fixes it. I'm 99% sure the problem occurred even before I installed drivers and such, but I'm running a Dell Inspiron E1505 with ATI Mobility X1400.

Full C: Backup And The System State - .bat

I'm creating a .bat to run a backup job and it keeps failing. The event log says that no media was specified. The job works fine if I load it to the GUI. The 4mm DAT drive is specified in the GUI but that doesn't seem to carry over to the command line. In the end all I want is a full C: backup and the system state, overwriting whatever tape is in the drive. This is the command from the .bat

Restore System State From Bootable Cd

Mar 21, 2006

I have a bootable cd that contains a backup of my system state. It boots to a dos command prompt. I cannot find info on how to restore this should I need to in the future. Also, I wished to create a ERD but I have no floppy drive. Info I have found tells me to use regedt.32 (or regedit) but info on how to create, store, restore this is confusing (involves either a long bat file or refers to how to restore from within? a domain). All I wish to do is to have the cd equivilent of the ERD floppy that I can insert when asked to do so from the W2K cd. If this is not possible, I would like to know how to accomplish this using another method.

Multiple Player Slow Map Loads - System Error Shutdown Games

Aug 12, 2002

I ran into this problem in both WindowsME and XP. While in multiplayer mode in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I would get excessive page file activity which would get progressively worse. Map load times would constantly increase as each new map was loaded until the system reported WOLF.exe had caused and error and would shutdown the game. The solution for my system is to set both the Desktop AND game color to 16-bit. Also, set both to the same resolution. I like 1280 x 1024, but that may be too high for some systems. After this tweak, my map load times went from >1 min to between 10 and 20 seconds. Right where a P4 1.5 with 256 megs should be.

Desktop Blank After Bootup From Either Reboot/shutdown

Nov 24, 2007

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying there are updates for your computer(it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs. Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware.Just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.

Continual Boot Loop

Sep 4, 2008

Has been working fine for 3 days but it took a while to shutdown 2 days ago so I shut down with power switch. It now refuses to boot up. Goes through all usual till the 'start windows normally', run in safe mode' etc. The cursor will not move via any key on keyboard (although can use keyboard to access bios features) so I have no option other than to wait till 30 second timer countdown and it tries to start windows norally. After the 30 second countdown, the Windows splash screen appears half illuminated and it goes back to boot up again. Have tried to boot from CD (Windows disc) via Bios setting but the process continues as usual not allowing boot from disc.Have swapped Sata cables for new ones on DVD and HDD, tried to run windows setup with a brand new HDD but get BSOD after 2 minutes saying virus or HDD problem?Have tried swapping memory modules, removed graphics card and wifi card, nothing works!

Computer Keeps Rebooting - Recovered From Serious Error

My Computer keeps rebooting. It does this several times a day. It started about 2 weeks ago. When it reboots it says the computer has recovered from a serious error, and a few click here links, leading me to a .dmp and a .xls file. It doesn't matter what I am doing.
Sometimes I'll click a desktop icon .reboot. Then click a link from my email pop client.reboot. Or maybe I click a link in my browser.reboot. it's not one thing that I do, when it decides to reboot. I unchecked the auto restart button, and got this blue screen.
I have not added any new Hardware or software. I formatted and re installed new Windows XP Pro Sp2 3 days ago, hoping it was software virus related NOPE Is something wrong with my usb ports? The CPU fan is working goot and the temps are good, do it's not over heating.

Same thing happens with the floppy. Usually, when my computer booted before this problem occured, it went though normal boot sequence and I could see the light check for CD, and floppy...now it's not doing it. Empty Memory Computer System Without Rebooting

May 28, 2008

I do document conversions. I work with MS Word files anywhere from 6MB to 23MB in size. If I reboot the computer and start a processing task I get no hangs. However, the longer I work on a task like a "find and replace", the slower the computer's processing gets and then I run out of virtual memory. When run out of virtual memory, I can no longer save the file.

Is there a way to reset or empty out the memory of my computer system without rebooting the system? I can copy and paste a small amount of text like a comma, but that does not help the memory problem. Edited to correct spelling error.
