Full C: Backup And The System State - .bat
Jul 21, 2005
I'm creating a .bat to run a backup job and it keeps failing. The event log says that no media was specified. The job works fine if I load it to the GUI. The 4mm DAT drive is specified in the GUI but that doesn't seem to carry over to the command line. In the end all I want is a full C: backup and the system state, overwriting whatever tape is in the drive. This is the command from the .bat
ntbackup backup "@c:ackupserver.bks" /m normal /v:yes

I'm using Windows 2000 SP4.After a major meltdown and reformat I am resolved to implement a backup and restore plan.I have a basic set up I like - it rarely changes - of certain software and documents/files structure. Is there a way to completely backup a Windows 2000 installation - with full program, registry and file support - so that if need be it can be restored with one fell swoop?I have heard of Norton Ghost but some reviews I read on Version 9 have me a bit skeptical of trying it.

I just installed Paragon Exact Image 7.0 and sent a full image of my C Drive to a partition on my slave drive. I also created a recovery boot CD made from the same software. Is there a way to use my new recovery CD to boot to my slave partition to see if the puter will boot and to see if the "full image" really is a full image?

I have a bootable cd that contains a backup of my system state. It boots to a dos command prompt. I cannot find info on how to restore this should I need to in the future. Also, I wished to create a ERD but I have no floppy drive. Info I have found tells me to use regedt.32 (or regedit) but info on how to create, store, restore this is confusing (involves either a long bat file or refers to how to restore from within? a domain). All I wish to do is to have the cd equivilent of the ERD floppy that I can insert when asked to do so from the W2K cd. If this is not possible, I would like to know how to accomplish this using another method.

I am sole installer and user of my XP Home SP2 machine. I have Administrator rights; (I checked to make sure in Safe Mode as the actual default Admin). In trying to backup my System State, it "fails" 75% into it saying I don't have permission on certain sensitive files and that restore will fail.

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:1. Open the Control Panel2. Double-click on system3. Click the System Restore tab4. Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"5. Hit Apply6. You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure.

I just performed a full system scan on my computer using AVG Spyware. The process (doing nothing else and having no other programs running) took 35 minutes and scanned 245,000 + "objects". My question is simple, and may leave me looking foolish, but I have to ask...is it "normal" for a computer used by only 2 people for only 3 months to have that many "objects"?

I am in big trouble. I have an hp pavilion a206x- and oldie. The kids gunked it up and it was so slow and running out of memory. Add/remove programs did not help. I decided to use the recovery disks and start with a clean slate. I backed up what we needed on cds and did a full recovery after doing the ctrl backspace option 6 to erase the hard drive. (oh, btw, it is XP) After all six disks, it freezes. I get to the screen that says "Recovery in progress." with Finalizing recovery highlighted in red on the left. Chatted with HP tech and there are no other recovery disks available because it is so old. I don't want to put any money into it. She says repair or retail OS purchase only options.

After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

I just had Win XP Pro installed on my machine. Primary HD is 80 GB. The drive previously ran Win 98 SE. The tech formatted it and installed Win XP Pro. System runs fine and all appears to function OK. However, the drive capacity is not accurately displayed anywhere in the system (other than BIOS). I'm trying to find out how I can have the drive space accurately displayed.

Could anyone tell me how to change the name of a user account so thatthe folder in 'Documents and Settings' for that user changes also, aswell as any other system references to that user. The chimps at thecomputer store made the account name 'sihdigc', which is justridiculous. I've set everything up on this account and don't fancyhaving to make a new one, I'd just like to know how to change the username properly.

For some strange reason my Start Menu items/shortcuts have been deleted (in both my Documents & Settings folder and 'All Users'), except for a blank shortcut (no name, no link) with the 'My Computer' icon. The weird thing is the Start Menu folders and their contents are in tact.Initially I thought I accidentally deleted them so I manually created a few shortcuts back to some of programs, but after restarting Windows, they were gone again and only that mysterious blank shortcut appeared again!I did a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus 2007 and AVG Anti-Spyware and they didn't find anything.

I have a high end Dell system (XPS Gen 2) and am running XP Pro, SP2. While I'm in "Full Screen" mode playing games, it crashes on me, no matter which game I play. I get a blank blue screen and hear a competitive "thumping" sound. The only way I can continue from there is to hard boot. I have more than enough memory and processor speed to handle the games I play.

I have just reinstalled WinXP to try to get rid of this problem but it still persists. Basically, my computer is booting itself up from a powered off state but only when the phone line is connected to it (I have dial up internet access). If the phone line is not connected to it, the PC stays off. (Note the PC isn't dialling out - at least i don't think it is). I guess the easy answer is just to remember to unplug the phone line

My PC has upon startup has reverted to state before a hard drive format that was done July 2007. I checked a restore point and only today's Oct 21 was there and the next previous month was not Sept 2008 but July 2007.
I tried booting in safe mode for the most recent configuration that worked but no change. All folders and files since july 2007 has disappeared.

I am about to purchase a laptop and if there is anything I've learned over the years, it's that these companies like to cram laptops with useless software, most of which expires after a certain amount of time thus making it even more useless. What I would like to do after purchasing the laptop is completely format the hard drive and then install my own copy of Windows along with software that I do use. If anything ever goes wrong however, the originally installed version of Windows along with the manufacturer's software / utilities will most likely be needed for warranty. So my question is about how to make a perfect copy of the hard drive before formatting it. I have Partition Magic which has an option called "Copy Partition" which I imagine is what I am looking for, but I would like to make sure I don't do anything wrong.
Would I install Partition Magic, make a hidden partition that is large enough for the currently installed version of Windows and the extra "bundled" software, and then copy Windows and the software to it? After which I would then format the rest of the hard drive and then install my own version of Windows there. If anything ever goes wrong, I would format the partition I was working with and copy the hidden partition back to it. Is this the correct thing to do, and if so is there anything else I should be aware of before doing this. For example, will the original version of windows still function correctly if I ever did have to restore it? I always hear about people doing this and I assume this is what they do.

I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.

I recently tried reformatting my hard disk and reinstalling windows to do a "clean-up" and start anew. Upon reinstalling Windows, I tried to download and install SP2.
Once SP2 is installed, the first time this happened I received an error message that said "SP2 Instlalation failed - Systme is in a fragile state please go to Control Panel and uninstall" After that I tried reinstalling the service pack. After this, I received the blue screen of death after bootup, with a big message that I couldn't read (It was distorted by the monitor and only on screen for a little bit).

I would like to restore my old computer to its original state, but can't figure out how. Gateway won't help me because it is out of warranty. I have both the original DVDs I made when I bought it as well as the Recovery drive it came with. I can't figure out how to use either one. I thought the DVDs would boot from the first one and go from there, but they don't. Can anyone walk me through this using either medium? If it makes a difference, it is Windows XP home media center and a Gateway GT5220.

the S3 sleep state to work on the Tyan Thunder K8N motherboard running WindowsXP Pro x64? When I check my sytem from within Windows, it only says it supports S1 and S4 sleep states... I have the most recent motherboard bios and all other 64-bit updates installed... but for whatever reason, no utility, test programs or even Windows itself sees that this motherboard supports the S3 sleep state. It's a logo'd desktop motherboard, so it is supposed to support S3, but I can't for the life of me get WinXP Pro x64 to recognize that it does.
