Backup Software Which Will Backup Just The Changed Elements Of The Past File
Jun 22, 2005
I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.

After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

I'm trying to set up a backup system where I copy changed files to a zip file or directory outside of the regular backup set.In other words,And that would replace anything in D that had been changed in C. Great. But what if I want to save those changed files in C to echanged/%date%? I can't see a way to do this with Robocopy. And in case it isn't obvious, the advantage of using this method is you get redundant backups using much less space. In my experience backups are used more often to recover corrupted files than corrupted harddrives. And the problem with simply mirroring a drive is if the backup runs after the corruption, your backup is now corrupted too. And I know I could keep multiple sets of the whole backup, but that takes mucho space.

basically what im looking to do is delete some old entries that the XP backup utility has created over time that i setup a while ago. Im using the "copy" option.so nothing has been appended or incremental.Im just looking to avoid deleting the setup i got, and maybe just delete a few "copy" backups so that theres not 8 gigs / 1 years worth of backups.i only need about 4 months I forgot about it.cuz i never neaded it. But it looks as if its the only way b/c i cant just delete selected backups.all or nothing?/ anyone know of a better backup utility that is simple and easy on a system BTW?

Before re-installing the XP operating system on my Dell desktop, a backup of the system (using the Windows System Utilities) was saved to an external hard drive. Then Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 Service Pack 2 was re-installed. The *.bkf on the external hard drive was accidentally deleted. There was a warning that it was too large to go to the Recycle Bin before it was deleted. I want to un-delete and restore this *.bkf or at least get as many of the *.jpg files (digital photos) out of it. Is there some file retrieve program that will deal specifically with .bkf files given that it is so large (many GBs)? One program we tried didn't locate any *.bkf files.

after doing a system recovery with a backup i found that the backup file is off no use to me anymore. The only problem is i can't delete it and it is taking up a large amount of space. I already tried going into safe mode to delete but it didn't work. i tried changing it from a read only folder but it says the file is either write protected or in use. i believe it may be somehow in use. if anyone knows how to delete this folder.

I got a WD "My Book Essential" 160gb external drive for Christmas, and as it does not come with backup software, I decided to try the Windows backup utility. I had to reformat the new drive from FAT32 into NTFS, and then I did a complete backup of the entire system. It asked for a diskette to create a boot disk, and then completed fine. However, when I looked at the .bkf file to see how large it was, it was 46 gb!! My hard drive on my pc that I backed up only shows 32 gb used. How could the backup file be larger than what was backed up? Is there some option/feature that I need to change?

I believe I have committed a fundamental eejit blunder. For reasons that are too complicated to explore here I cleaned my 140 gig Seagate C Drive (no, not that reason) with two wipes using the Kill Disk programme. I then re-installed XP Pro which also includes a formatting phase. All appeared well as I installed AVG anti-virus, Zone Alarm Pro, and Ad Aware; I then loaded Picasa, Adobe and all the bits and pieces that make for fun and utility.

I have a small problem with a couple of batch files that I'm using for a quick backup at work. When the batchfile has run I have noticed that there is a mismatch between the numbers shown for the original and the numbers shown for the backup. E.G my documents on the original might read :- 1500 folders / 13,385 files. Now if I go to the properties of the backup it might read for example 1500 folders / 13,357 files. Why the difference? Why does the batch not copy all files as asked of it.I am copying the documents folder on the file server to 2 other machines via a mapped drive as below

I'm using XP Home and have been backing up My Documents regularly to an external hard drive with the back up utility in XP. The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility

I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just, well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)

I have just done a fresh install of XP Home on one of my computers and had quite a bit of trouble getting some drivers. Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today. Any suggestions on how I should go about it and what software, free would be nice, that will allow me to do this? I hope I made myself clear as to my intentions.

On Drive C Used Space 11.2GB Free Space 137GB (NTFS)I am expecting this drive to fill up over the next 18 months. Drive D Not used at present condition raw 40GB (I got that from the properties tab - after I had tried to get Windows to format it). How do I change it from raw state to something that can be used? I also have Seagate Free Agent 250GB external backup - Not Used at present. I have some software called Spotmau Power Suite 2008 but I am not really sure how to put this whole thing together. At the moment when I start the computer (Drive C) it runs CHKDisk on drive D every
time.
1)What Im really trying to do is format Drive D. I tried to do that with Windows but it didn't work. I dint know how to do this so any advice would be helpful.
2)I would like to use the rest of the capacity for backup that is Drive D and the Seagate external drive, but Im not sure how to go about it. Can someone help please?
3)Am I right in thinking it would be better to use just the one operating system Windows XP on drive C and not put it on drive D as well?

I have had my Toshiba for 2 years and after reading a number of horror stories I decided to backup my information only to find that there is no "backup icon" in "system tools" and the microsoft website states that I should install it from my Windows cd rom! Unfortunately Circuit City didn't give me one when I bought my laptop.I have searched my programmes and have found that if I upgrade my Sonic Record Now I can get a backup function. I object to paying for something that I should have got as part of my purchase. My information consists mainly of photos, music and word documents.
