When Fails To Restore From 3rd Party Backup Files
Dec 14, 2007Recently, Windows XP could not Restore the system to Restore Points created by it, OR even to Restore Points set by third-party anti-Spyware programs.I am using AVG Free Edition, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, and also Spyware Terminator, along with the Firewall of Windows XP, for on-line protection whilst surfing the Internet.Additionally, CCleaner and CheckLinks both Freewares are used, once a week or so, to remove unwanted cookies, dead links, temporary files etc.Since these Freewares also create Restore Points, I would like to know whether this affects Restoring of the system to EARLIER Restore Points created by Windows XP. To overcome this problem would it be safe to run the above-mentioned Freeware programs without allowing these to create their individual Restore Points and then create new Restore Points with Windows XP ?

it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"
After Backup Should Have My Backup Folder Or Backup.bkf File?
Aug 16, 2008After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

May 12, 2007I'm using XP Home and have been backing up My Documents regularly to an external hard drive with the back up utility in XP. The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility

Aug 28, 2008I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and wanted to upgrade to the SP3 that's out. It showed up in Auto Updates, and I ran the install, but it failed. The system still runs ok, but I can't figure out how to get past the error. It tries to install the update KB946648, but fails with an access denied error. The SP3 install then back everything out and quits. How do I get past this error? I checked my update history, and it says that update KB946648 is already installed. Apr 15, 2005I was given an old Gateway laptop computer with a 400 MHz Pentium processor and 256 kb of RAM, running Windows 98SE. I decided to upgrade it to Windows XP Home. The upgrade starts out fine, it checks the system, gives no error messages, and then begins to copy files. The hard drive and CD indicator lights flicker to indicate files are being copied, and there's the dotted scroll bar that scrolls from left to right on the screen to show you that there's activity going on. the hard drive and CD indicator lights stop flickering, it seems that files are no longer being copied from the CD to the hard drive. However, the dotted scroll bar on the screen keeps on scrolling from left to right. I have left it doing this for several hours; that scroll bar keeps on scrolling, but the installation process stops. The system doesn't hang, the file copying just stops. Win XP is never installed, and after reboot it reverts back to Win 98SE.
Instead of an upgrade, I tried wiping the hard drive, reformatting, and doing a clean install of XP, but it doesn't help. It gets to the same point in the setup, and just stops copying files. No error messages or any indication that anything is wrong. I have tried installing Win XP on at least 10 different occasions, but no success.

Jul 19, 2008I'm running windows XP a dell desktop that's a few years old. I was away from home for six months, and before i left i powered my computer down--and now that i'm home, it fails to boot. When i power it on, a few seconds after it will begin to continually beep. they're long, but spaced apart.. after a while, it will just hold the beep as a solid tone. It will normally get loading screen of windows XP (the black one that has the bar and shows the windows logo), and that's when the screen will just go blank and it holds the beep.
I don't get any errors or messages during the startup, and if i enter the bios settings as it's beginning to boot, it will not begin to beep or turn off.
Fails To Boot Up
Apr 26, 2008I am a new user to this site and I am moderately computer literate and have a basic knowledge of my system.
It's a Gateway PC running on Windows XP with a Pentium 4 Processor, as for the base specs I'm not quite sure, but I know they are lower than my laptops specs are.Just today when I got home from work my parents had started to worry about the PC, they would start it up and then wait for it to boot as usual, but this time it started to turn on and wouldn't do anything from there, it would just sit at the loading screen and not even get to the loading bar or welcome screen it's self.So I tried a couple of reboots to see if that would help and it did not, so I picked up my OS install disc to force a reboot or to repair the system, I can restart it but it does the same thing even with the OS disc inside the tower, it doesn't even read it at all.I'm not too sure what else to do at this point, if there are any other suggestions please provide them, if you have further questions to ask me, I'll try and answer them to the best of my ability.
Fails To Setup
Apr 10, 2008I'm currently trying to install a fresh copy of windows xp. everything goes smooth until windows enters its setup and the computer stalls at "approximate Time Remaining: 39 Minutes" then turns completely off. It did this to me the last time i reinstalled windows but removing one of my sticks of ram fixed it. This time that hasnt worked nor swapping out any pieces, only ones i havent are my hd, mb, and psu. No error is displayed before shutting off.

I have tried booting in safe mode and get the same problem.I have a recovery CD but wish to avoid reinstalling windows and all that entails. I have found reference and source elsewhere to booting from startup floppy discs but have no access to a PC with a disc drive to create them.Is it possible to create a boot CD for windows XP or can anyone suggest another solution?

(The remote assistance request is a file placed in a shared folder.) Jul 15, 2008Installing either Windows 2000 SP4 or SP3 on my Windows 2000 SP2 pc results in error that the Windows Installer is not digitally signed. Clicking the "OK" button results in "An unexpected error occured" and the setup fails. Thinking maybe it's an oudated Windows Installer - "Msiexec.exe" is the cause, installing Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2) results in error saying it needs SP3 and thus also fails. Downloading from Microsoft SP4, SP3 sites, saving it on my pc and then executing them results in "SP4 (or SP3) Setup determined that the following downloaded SP4 (or SP3) files are corrupt"- showing a whole list of of them.

Mar 27, 2008I recently somehow ended up with virusheat on my computer, but the real problem came when i got rid out it. I first tried using spybot and adaware to delete the virus, but that didn't seem to work and i eventually just tried to uninstall it. When I clicked uninstall, it seemed to also delete many of my other programs and scambled the locations of many links. now many programs, like mozilla, doesn't work. Everytime i tried to do something, i got the BSOD. I eventually got rid of Virusheat and the BSODs with malwarebytes', but I still do not have all of the stuff Virusheat deleted. So that when i tried to system restore my comp. That doesn't work, even in safe mode; I just get the "no changes have been made to my system" thing after the system restore reboots my comp. I don't have Norton on my comp, as far as i know (I can't really cheack because search stopped working). My system restore is definetly on and i have many different restore points prior to the virus. I need to know if there is a way to return my comp to the state it was in, before the infection

Nov 26, 2006I'm not sure this is a well-known problem or not but it does happen to me and it's bugging me all the time. I need help! Everytime I try to restart my computer from a perfect shut-down, the log-on screen won't appear and I'll be sticking my eyes to the loading screen. But after sometime maybe in 2 or 3 hours, the log-on screen will appear when u restart the computer again. The safe mode can be accessed and it's working just fine.

Boot Up Fails Early In Post
Dec 30, 2004When the comp is first turned on, everything powers up as normal then it stops at the first boot screen prior to the memory test and powers off the monitor. The computer stays on but does nothing.

The problem is intermittent and sometimes the computer will randomly shut down.
I initially thought this was video card problem so I have swapped out the video card for a known good one with no success.
Next thing I thought was overheating, I checked the system temps in the bios after a good boot and noticed the CPU temp was on 90 degrees Celsius, I thought this was extremely hot so I cleaned the heat sink and fan and the temp has dropped to the figures below:
Motherboard 38 �C (100 �F)
CPU 73 �C (163 �F)
Aux 45 �C (113 �F)
Seagate ST380011A 43 �C (109 �F)
The CPU temp still seems hot, however the system will run for days without a problem then out of the blue fail to start.
I then suspected a power supply problem and still suspect that this may be the culprit.
Once the computer has failed to boot, it will not boot fully again until the PSU power lead has been removed briefly.
If I unplug the power cable momentarily the system boots fine on the next boot, which seems to indicate something is being reset when the power is shut off totally.
Voltage Values:
350w PSU
CPU Core 1.68 V
+3.3 V 3.25 V
+5 V 4.73 V
+12 V 12.80 V
+5 V Standby 4.89 V
DIMM VTT 1.33 V
I have also run sea-tools which has detected errors on the hard drive, but I believe the problem is occurring before the system checks the hard drive.
I am receiving no bios beep error codes.

Jul 14, 2008XP fails to start in any mode. XP has been reloaded from an image with no change in situation. (I was reimaging the machines anyway.) I have not yet had a successful boot since reimaging, and hence XP (mini)setup has not completed (the image was prepared using sysprep to allow it to be rolled out to multiple machines. These machines are connected to an 2003 AD Domain). Currently I'm running memtest86+ from Knoppix. Knoppix booted with only one error about not passing in proper display information. (Perhaps the graphics card is going?). The last file loaded in a safe mode bootup is mup.sys, which leads me further to believe that it's a hardware problem (and that's backed up by Google).
I've opened it up, cleaned it out with a little (make that a lot) of compressed air. Boy, was it dusty. I forgot to mention, this computer is at a high school, if you want an idea of what the users are like . It's a magnet/gifted/selective enrollment (for you Chicago people) high school though. Any suggestions on things to try? I didn't see anything obviously wrong on the motherboard: that is, no exploded capicitors, disconnected cables, missing RAM, etc. I'm running memtest now, however we won't know the results of that until tomorrow. I'm going to swap out the HD with a different one and we'll see if that's any better.
