View 2 Replies View RelatedSo this week MS released a critical update for IE6. The IE update failed on my machine.I submitted a trouble ticket via MS online portal which is free if a failure or anomaly occurs during a windows update. Yes, I gave permission for the MS portal to extract certain files. At the moment I am disinclined to download IE7 as my 99% preference4 is Firefox save for Windows and Office updates which require IE.Here is the response from MS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a very screwed up Win XP computer and am trying to reinstall XP from the CD. I changed the boot order to boot from CD and everything goes fine, files load etc. It asks a few questions during the loading which I answer and all goes fine. Then after it loads the files it finally asks 'are you sure you want to proceed' but at that point everything USB fails including the keyboard, so I can't tell it Yes to proceed. There is no other port to plug in an input device other than the 6 usb ports. Is there a way to get around this?

it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"

The funny part is that I downloaded the windows defender (Microsoft Antispyware) and to do so I had to go throught the windows validation and no problem it went through it and I downloaded it. View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using this laptop, and I have to deal with it for quite some time before I can replace my other one. Anyway, I've attempted to install Windows Service Pack 2 and 3 several times (I can't download or update Windows applications without it), but I haven't had any luck.
I almost get to the end of the installation when the "Extracting Files" box closes and an error message pops up saying "Setup Error: System cannot find file specified", then "Setup Error: Installation did not complete". It does this after the extraction stops on "i386updateupdate.exe"

I have a strange problem. Windows tells me "updates are ready to be installed". This is the update-Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-042 - Critical Vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (936227). I have installed this update at least 5-6 times in the last 2 days. I have just realized that this is the same update. I install, and 3 minutes later the icon is back telling me to install-Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-042 - Critical Vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (936227). I have restarted the computer after each install, but this has not solved the problem.I am running XP PRO/SP2. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem, but i recently activated Outlook 2003.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI now think a problem, that may have been a bug, could now be a winsock problem. What is happening, is I cannot connect to windows update. It is only anything having to do with and url dealing with windows update. When I get the screen, "unable to connect" and select to have I.E. run diagnostics, it doesn't come up with anything. I've run serveral virus/malware scans and nothing comes up. I have XP, a legal copy, but it does not have the diagnostics software. I have downloaded some sort of winsock "fix" software, but do not want to run this, in fear of totally messing something up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was browsing the internet (wink), and randomly my desktop background changed to an image of a fake virus alert. Also, many security-related sites were blocked, and clicking on any google results redirected me to various advertising sites. Only a couple weeks prior I had this same virus, which I believe to be Smitfraud, and resolved it by running the MalwareBytes program. When I tried to do this this time, however, the program froze immediately upon starting the scan.An additional symptom I had was when I would start up Windows, If I started up in safe mode I would get the same problem, only the problematic file would be services.exe. Also I had no taskbar in safe mode. The only attempt at fixing this I really made was downloading and running SmitFraudFix.exe, but all that seemed to do was delete my Firefox bookmarks which I promptly restored.
At any rate, I could not solve this problem, so I repaired(not reinstalled) windows. Upon completing repair I ran a windows update like any sane person would, but it was unable to connect. I downloaded the manual SP3 installer and ran it, but got an access denied error. I ran AdAware & MalwareBytes successfully(both were still fully updated definitions) and they removed stuff, and I was able to connect to Windows Update, but after attempting to download the WindowsUpdate file(not the actual windows updates, but the updated WindowsUpdate if you catch my drift) I got an "Access is Denied" error, with error code 0x80070005. I repaired windows again, but the same exact pattern happened.
I have just installed a new hard drive (80G), installed windows XP Home Edition on it, and activated it. Went to the windows update to get the latest updates, First is the SP3 update. So it downloads, and then I get the error message:
There is not enough disk space on F:/ (I have an external hard drive as well, so it put the C drive on the F spot, not a problem)WINDOWS$NtServicePackUninstall$ to install Service Pack 3. Setup requires a minimum of 1 additional megabytes of free space or if you also want to archive the files for uninstallation, Setup requires 1 additional megabytes of free space
This lady doesnt do much with her pc. Let her granddaughter download crap from bearshare and you know the malware virus issues galore. I ran a couple of programs to get rid of those issues. She had NO antivirus so I was going to download the trial version to Trend Micro for her. This is when I discovered she had never updated her pc. Trend says it will only work on SP2 and above. Tried to, and updates were disabled. Followed the microsoft KB articles related to turning on the auto updates, the BITS services, to no avail. Tried to register and reregister the DLL's, that failed also. Tried to go to the update site, tried to downloading the malicious removal tool, it will not let me run it. I ran housecall, a bunch of vulnerabilities show up possible related to just the SP1 issue.

I am running into a very annoying issue. We all work for a local PC repair shop and have had at least 10 pc's and laptops come in during the last two days with all the same issue. Customers have installed some windows update, rebooted and the systems will only display a black screen with a cursor. Some will get into windows if you leave them sitting after an hour or so, but no services are running, cannot run anything on the system (obviously without services running). Have tried repair installs, checkdisk's, and still no luck. Have also scanned HDD's on different systems with numerous anti- virus -spyware programs. nothing found.
Any one have any idea's?We literally had 6 or 7 day rushes for the issues from major VIP people that own local businesses, and our only fix has been to reload windows. Any insight would be great. And please understand that we are all Microsoft certified and have tried all of your run of the mill fixes for windows.
This morning it tells me it has recovered from a serious error, but after about 5 minutes of seemingly normal usage, it briefly flashed some kind of blue screen error (no way in hell I could read it)Now it is constantly asking for a chkdsk, I let it run and all appears OK... but when I get to the login screen the display starts to look weird like there are lines running through it, and it promptly flashes the same blue screeen and starts all over again.
I have been able to briefly get into safe mode, tried a system restore but when I went to reboot the processes started all over again. PLEASE NOTE that getting into safe mode takes some patience.... it hangs FOREVER when loading the agpCPQ.sys driver, and sometimes just goes ahead and reboots on it's own.. TWICE so far today I have managed to get into safe mode, but only for a few minutes before it reboots and starts over.
