I want to update my external hard drive that I keep music and photos on, but I don't know how to do it with completly rewritting the file. There has to be a way to update it, but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm running XP, and I have and External hard drive that runs through teh usb.

I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to learn more about backups. Bottom line is what do I do right now to make sure what I need is saved, because there's some indications that my hardware may be failing. But I want to do it right from the git-go so I don't waste a lot of time redoing things.

I'm planning to buy a 200gb external hard drive. Then what?
1) what software do you recommend?
a) Should I use the HP software that came with my computer? or buy something?
b) Ghost? is that Symantec?
(Can someone say more about the concerns with using that software?)
c) Does "ghosting" mean the same thing as "cloning" (in Stallcup's post--#2 above)?
2) how do I know if all my OS and programs are on one partition? (I have an HP and the hard drive is obviously partitioned into "HP_Pavilion (C)" and "HP_Recovery (D)".
After backing up on this drive for nine months (and with a reformating three months ago), now the backup will not recognize the E: drive. No error message is given. MY Computer shows that it is now 3/4 full with plenty of space (46 gig) on the Acomodate 160 gig drive under NTSF format. I am thinking of changing to a fire wire from the USB.I have been doing a complete system backup and maybe I'll change to just backing up my documents after we get it working.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have 4 PC's all running WinXP/SP3 on a workgroup using simple sharing. All PC's had access to all other PC's shared folders and external backup drives. Norton Ghost worked successfully from each PC, writing to either of two external backup hd (one ea on two of the four PC's). Life was good. Then I moved two PC's and changed the Computer Name on each. Now I am able to access the My Documents shared folder from/to any computer, but I'm unable to access the external backup harddrives. I have admin privledges on all machines.

I read somewhere you can copy your drive so that way is something goes wrong with your main drive you can still boot from the backup.I have a Biostar P4M80-m4 Mobo, Windows xp is installed. I was wondering if I backed up to an external enclosure could I boot from that in case something happened to the main drive?The program I plan on used is R-Drive Image Since it has a 15d trial. I'm using the copy disk feature.

I have been trying to transfer my "favorites" from my old computer (windows 98) to my new one with windows XP. When I copy the favorites onto the floppy I can see that they are all there. BUT, when I put that floppy into my new computer it changes the favorites contents to those on the new computer. For instance: I had probably 100 sites to copy and my new computer favorites only has about 10 sites. Now those 10 sites are on the floppy and not the 100 I placed there.....I'm confused.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a WD 250gb external HD, i have since switched to a mac and still want to use this HD.however there are 3 files on this drive that seem to be microsoft updates, not sure how they ended up on this drive....i did not place them there....id imagine it was thru one of the many microsoft auto updates i want to try and delete these files, but i get an error saying that i either dont have authority to delete these files , or they are currently in use. they are two folders that are 0 bytes....and have long random numeric and alpha titles such as e7e4e1d6bbb6349...etc.

I can see those HDD's through "My Network Places" on the secondary computer, but I get an error stating that I must see the administrator for access permissions. I split it into 3 drives C:, D: & E:my C drive consists of XP Pro Operating System my D drive consists of a Operating System BACKUP file (I created it when I successfully installed XP Pro on my system) my E drive consists of some important documents & downloaded software files.Now I want to restore my C drive with XP Pro initial stages (from the Backed up file).If I do that will my documents in D & E drive exist and accessible? View 2 Replies View RelatedBefore re-installing the XP operating system on my Dell desktop, a backup of the system (using the Windows System Utilities) was saved to an external hard drive. Then Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 Service Pack 2 was re-installed. The *.bkf on the external hard drive was accidentally deleted. There was a warning that it was too large to go to the Recycle Bin before it was deleted. I want to un-delete and restore this *.bkf or at least get as many of the *.jpg files (digital photos) out of it. Is there some file retrieve program that will deal specifically with .bkf files given that it is so large (many GBs)? One program we tried didn't locate any *.bkf files.

The only problem is i can't delete it and it is taking up a large amount of space. I already tried going into safe mode to delete but it didn't work. i tried changing it from a read only folder but it says the file is either write protected or in use. i believe it may be somehow in use. if anyone knows how to delete this folder.

I had to reformat the new drive from FAT32 into NTFS, and then I did a complete backup of the entire system. It asked for a diskette to create a boot disk, and then completed fine. However, when I looked at the .bkf file to see how large it was, it was 46 gb!! My hard drive on my pc that I backed up only shows 32 gb used. How could the backup file be larger than what was backed up? Is there some option/feature that I need to change?

For reasons that are too complicated to explore here I cleaned my 140 gig Seagate C Drive (no, not that reason) with two wipes using the Kill Disk programme. I then re-installed XP Pro which also includes a formatting phase. All appeared well as I installed AVG anti-virus, Zone Alarm Pro, and Ad Aware; I then loaded Picasa, Adobe and all the bits and pieces that make for fun and utility.

E.G my documents on the original might read :- 1500 folders / 13,385 files.Now if I go to the properties of the backup it might read for example 1500 folders / 13,357 files.Why the difference? My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. When the computer has restarted I run a disc analysis, but the external drives have no paging file.I notice that many people move their paging file to an external drive, so why isn't it working for me?

Cannot access data all of a sudden, I am getting an error message, "file system corrupt and unreadable." In disk management, the drive is listed as healthy, 160G, but no NTFS listed. I shut it off when I am done to save power, and just the other day I notice a file on it that is quite large isn't allowing me to open it any longer. It keeps saying that the 'file or folder is corrupt and unreadable'...Weird. I was just looking at the folder yesterday. Is there absolutely anything I can do to get that data back?? Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just,well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)
