I am backing up data to an external USB hard drive. What should I backup? I don't have enough room to backup my whole hard drive onto the external. I'm looking for suggestions of specific folders ie. Documents and Settings, etc. as opposed to advice like "whatever can't be downloaded or replaced easily".

Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? I also got this stop code last night when trying to do a disk check to correct errors. Stop 0X0000000A (0X00000188, 0X000000FF, 0X00000000, 0X804E35E9). I have located online page for stop 0X0000000A codes which states could be driver problem... that last one parimeter 4 -- 804E35E9 how/where would I
find out which/if this is associated to a particular driver so I can possibly correct it?
My problem is a result of a long series of attempts to fix a corrupt Windows registry file. A few days ago I booted my laptop and received a blue screen error: c0000218, relating to a corrupt Windows registry file. Windows could not load. After a lot of searching online I found a way to manually replace this and four other related files from the c:WindowsRepair folder using the command prompt.
This process seemed to work and Windows began to load. I then received a lsass.exe error saying something about invalid passwords. My laptop began an infinite cycle of restarting itself. I looked up the lsass.exe error and people seemed to think it was unrecoverable. As my hard drive was reasonably small (100g) and had been showing some signs of problems I decided to just buy a new one. I went out and purchased a new 320g 2.5" hard drive along with a 2.5" USB drive enclosure and another 1g stick of RAM......
I need to learn more about backups. Bottom line is what do I do right now to make sure what I need is saved, because there's some indications that my hardware may be failing. But I want to do it right from the git-go so I don't waste a lot of time redoing things.

For example, if just the OS and programs are on one partition which is imaged, and data on another, then restoring that first partition it will not affect data."] I have ADD-like memory problems about when I back up what, and I can't afford to overwrite new data with old...

I'm planning to buy a 200gb external hard drive. Then what?
1) what software do you recommend?
a) Should I use the HP software that came with my computer? or buy something?
b) Ghost? is that Symantec?
(Can someone say more about the concerns with using that software?)
c) Does "ghosting" mean the same thing as "cloning" (in Stallcup's post--#2 above)?
2) how do I know if all my OS and programs are on one partition? (I have an HP and the hard drive is obviously partitioned into "HP_Pavilion (C)" and "HP_Recovery (D)".
After backing up on this drive for nine months (and with a reformating three months ago), now the backup will not recognize the E: drive. No error message is given. MY Computer shows that it is now 3/4 full with plenty of space (46 gig) on the Acomodate 160 gig drive under NTSF format. I am thinking of changing to a fire wire from the USB.I have been doing a complete system backup and maybe I'll change to just backing up my documents after we get it working.

Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.

Norton Ghost worked successfully from each PC, writing to either of two external backup hd (one ea on two of the four PC's). Life was good. Then I moved two PC's and changed the Computer Name on each. Now I am able to access the My Documents shared folder from/to any computer, but I'm unable to access the external backup harddrives. I have admin privledges on all machines.

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWell like alot of people I made the mistake of selecting safeboot in the boot.ini file in the msconfig file after my comp got a virus and would not boot into safemode. The hard drive is in two partitions: the C drive used to contain windows, and the D drive which has the data i am trying to save. I don't have a Windows XP disc because it was already on the comp when i bought it. I have attempted to restore the windows files with Bart PE bootup image disc but it wiped out Windows XP completely from the C drive in the process, but the Data drive is still showing up with all its files intact.

In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI turned the PC off to reboot when I though I was going into safe mode and went into regular mode instead. Now, it thinks one of my external drives is the C drive. On boot, I am getting a message that it cannot recognize find the system 32 windows config file (I'm paraphrasing).
I used the repair utility to get to the C prompt (which is pointed at the external drive) and checked the drive letters. I don't think the PC bios knows the hard drive is there.
I tried going into setup and reverting to factory installed configuration and that didn't change anything. I could not get it to recognize the hard drive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFound some very useful info on here so decided to sign up and post a recent problem i encountered with an external hard drive. the hard drive has a capacity of 80GB and came from another pc. there was a 25/55 partition already on it from the old pc. i tried to delete the partition that was 25gb. now i can't find that 25gb at all. when i plug it in to the usb slot i can only see the 55gb partition it used to appear as 2 hard drives in my computer and nothing else. when i use disc management to format it i only see 55gb.

Since Windows XP is supposed to have the drivers that are necessary, no driver disk was included, and none was needed.The problem developed when my Windows XP began to give me problems later. I had to re-install Windows XP. I did that, and I downloaded all Windows XP up dates (including Service Pack 2). Now, this Windows installation does not install the external hard-drive. I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. I've been using win 98se in the past and always backed up my drive using the "Drive Copy" software and that always worked just fine. I tried using it to copy my new Win XP drive and found that it has a different format called NTFS. My Drive Copy doesn't seem to work with the new drive. Any suggestions? View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm connecting a 30GB Travelstar Hard Drive via an external USB 2.0 case to my Thinkpad T40 with Windows XP (pro). Windows immediately recognized it. However, the hard drive does not show up under Windows Explorer. I can go into Device Manager, click on Disk Drives, and it does show the new drive there (along with my main hard drive, which is a 80 GB hard drive).
I cannot figure out how to make it show up in Windows Explorer with an Drive Letter assigned to it and thus, how to actually use it.
