I want to back up my files to an external hard drive using Windows Backup, but it is not shown as an option. The only options shown are the floppy and f: drives. Can you use this program to back up to an external drive? If so, how do you tell it where to send the data?

I'm looking for suggestions of specific folders ie. Documents and Settings, etc. as opposed to advice like "whatever can't be downloaded or replaced easily".

I also got this stop code last night when trying to do a disk check to correct errors. Stop 0X0000000A (0X00000188, 0X000000FF, 0X00000000, 0X804E35E9). I added a 120 gig Western Digital USB external drive and used Acronis to create a backup of my hard drive. I then used Windows XP to remove it as a USB device so I could power it off. Now, when I power it back on it is not recognized by XP and does not appear on My Computer or on Disk Management (where I originally formatted it for NTFS). All I get is a sound like a single "KERPLONK" when I power it on.

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

Then there is an extended partition at 5gb in size, which contains windows xp installation files. What I did was take my windows xp cd, make an ISO, and then extracted the iso and put the files into the extended partition of my external usb hard drive.The computer I want to install to has a cd drive that is not working and thus i cannot install windows xp from a cd. The BIOS of the computer DOES support booting from a USB device.I have partition magic software and have used it to create the 5gb extended partition on the usb external drive. However, I don't know how to configure anything so that it will acutally know to boot from this partition and what files to use to start the installation.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought a DELL labtop Inspiron 5052 over two years ago. It got XP Home version. A couple of weeks ago, a cup of coffee was spilled on my laptop. I took it to a computer shop. They contacted Dell and tried to order the labtop motherboard but to no avail as Dell has discontinued manufacturing this type. The warranty is only 1 year. So I decided to use it for spare parts. What 's an expensive cup of coffee ($3500.00). After removing the hard drive (60Gb) from the labtop, I made it as an external USB type hard drive. It was a perfect solution as at least I can save the data. But the fun was a short one as I now experience something to do with 'file access'. Connecting the external hard drive to my PC, I can see all the files and folders on it. The problem is on my Dell laptop I have 2 users setup under Document and Setting. One of the user logon (userA) enforces password while the the other (userB) enfoces no password for logging on. I can open files from userB with no problem but can not open files or folders from userA. It says "Access denied" or "file inaccessible". Is there a way to overcome this ?

When i try to just uncheck the "Encrypt contents to secure data" box i get the error

I'm planning to buy a 200gb external hard drive. Then what?
1) what software do you recommend?
a) Should I use the HP software that came with my computer? or buy something?
b) Ghost? is that Symantec?
(Can someone say more about the concerns with using that software?)
c) Does "ghosting" mean the same thing as "cloning" (in Stallcup's post--#2 above)?
2) how do I know if all my OS and programs are on one partition? (I have an HP and the hard drive is obviously partitioned into "HP_Pavilion (C)" and "HP_Recovery (D)".
After backing up on this drive for nine months (and with a reformating three months ago), now the backup will not recognize the E: drive. No error message is given. MY Computer shows that it is now 3/4 full with plenty of space (46 gig) on the Acomodate 160 gig drive under NTSF format. I am thinking of changing to a fire wire from the USB.I have been doing a complete system backup and maybe I'll change to just backing up my documents after we get it working.

I read somewhere you can copy your drive so that way is something goes wrong with your main drive you can still boot from the backup.I have a Biostar P4M80-m4 Mobo, Windows xp is installed. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 4 PC's all running WinXP/SP3 on a workgroup using simple sharing. All PC's had access to all other PC's shared folders and external backup drives. Norton Ghost worked successfully from each PC, writing to either of two external backup hd (one ea on two of the four PC's). Life was good. Then I moved two PC's and changed the Computer Name on each. Now I am able to access the My Documents shared folder from/to any computer, but I'm unable to access the external backup harddrives. I have admin privledges on all machines.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

Two times now, at a seemingly random times (both times round about 11:00AM), all of a sudden, loads (and I mean tens of thousands) of TMP files, looking like 0fb149fbcb12b2799cfd1c55fc08b4e9.TMP are pumped into my system32 folder. In a matter of 15 or 20 minutes, this may generated as much as 5GB of used diskspace. Some are 0K, some are 91K, but other than those tow, sizes seem to be constant.

In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI turned the PC off to reboot when I though I was going into safe mode and went into regular mode instead. Now, it thinks one of my external drives is the C drive. On boot, I am getting a message that it cannot recognize find the system 32 windows config file (I'm paraphrasing).
I used the repair utility to get to the C prompt (which is pointed at the external drive) and checked the drive letters. I don't think the PC bios knows the hard drive is there.
I tried going into setup and reverting to factory installed configuration and that didn't change anything. I could not get it to recognize the hard drive.
I have a usb external hard drive. Can I install windows os on this drive and use it.I am told that windows must be installed only on main hard drive 9i.e. drive 0).
