Restoring Hard Drive After Crash- Get Files On Back
Feb 18, 2006
i have a comaq presario computer with win 2k. Due to a virus ,my hard drive crashed . When i try and boot up i get the blue screen of death telling me there is an error and i need to consult manufacturer . Is there a way i can restore my hard drive and get my files on there back even though the hard drive has crashed, if so can you tell me the steps.
I want to back up my files to an external hard drive using Windows Backup, but it is not shown as an option. The only options shown are the floppy and f: drives. Can you use this program to back up to an external drive? If so, how do you tell it where to send the data?
I have a bad hard drive. I bought a new one and was in the process of re-loading Windows XP onto the new drive. I bought the computer with Windows ME on it and paid for the XP Upgrade. The only CDs I have are the XP Upgrade CD and the Comqaq "Recovery CD".The XP Load is requesting that I put in the old Windows ME CD to verify that I can load the Windows XP Upgrade OS, but I don't have the CD.
I am having a problem similar to this poster problem http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...cond-boot.html I made a mistake editing my second hard drive XP registry. Now it won't boot. My other hard drive will still boot (what I'm writing from) I have a backup of the registry I made in regedit.exe and I download regcool and erunt. Is there a way I can restore me second hard drives registry from another bootable hard drive?
I needed to reformat my Hard Drive from NTFS to Fat32. But in doing so, I managed to forget to back up my files. By reformatting, I erased everything on my C: drive. Now, since I'm not in Windows and cannot access it, I have no way of doing a System Restore. I don't own any XP Install discs, so that eliminates that option. The only solution I can think of would be to download the necessary files, but I don't know if there is such availability.
I have a Compaq Presario 2580US Notebook with an operating system Windows XP Home Edition. Previously I installed Windows XP Professional, and then after a few months something happened (I don't know what), and my computer would not operate. I charged up the battery completely and when I went to BIOS Utility to do a self test on the Hard Drive, it said no Hard Drive was detected and there was no IDE. I, then, had a friend look at it, and he pulled out the Hard Drive and noticed two prongs were bent. The prongs were then bent back staright and the drive put in. This still did not fix the problem. It says the command interepreter is missing.
I have windows XP, and a dell insiprion 6000. The last three times I have ran a defraged my hard drive it has become bad. After running my computer would act normal untill i shut it off, then windows xp would not load again. I get a blank screen with a blinking dash in the top left of the screen. They have been under replaced for free by seagate so i am wondering. Have i had bad luck with hard drives or could there be a problem with other parts of my computer?
I installed xp version 5.1 on my pc today after a hard drive crash and I have a few questions.explain it like your telling a 5 year old Do I need the SP2. I tried my best to find out if I had it and I don't think I do. The PC has a nvidia geforce 4200 video card and I don't think the pc is using it. How do I check.
I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
My hard drive crashed beyond salvage. I bought a new hard drive, installed it and used my recovery disks to get the basics back. It is a Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-Gr390, to be specific). It has Windows XP, pre SP1/SP2. When I installed it, I went through the formatting process and formatted it for the first time, being that it's a new HD. Everything worked as expected, but I have yet to update anything because I can not successfully connect to the Internet.
All efforts to create a connection were unsuccessful.Next to my laptop is a slow Dell desktop, runnung a fully updated XP operating system. Using the same cable modem, connection to the Internet was fine with the desktop for both wired and wireless, but not the newly formatted laptop. My ethernet jack and wireless card on the laptop are working (according to the device manager).
I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
I just deleted a partition and created a new one because I wanted to do a clean install of Windows Xp. Well everything installed fine except I'm supposed to have about 160 GB in my C: drive but now I have 130 GB. How do I get those 30 GB back Did I delete the partition wrong or something
my computer is running slow, i can recieve email but not send, i cant restore back to another date so im told by bt and others to format my hard drive any tips as boyfriends says it has to go back to shop to do that.
After messing around with some 3rd party software, my XP pretty much crashed¦missing task bar, can’t move files (paste option gone), F5 (search) only see that little dog on the bottom, cant install or uninstall programs (error saying something about Windows installer is not working), Safe mode doesn't work, and the list goes on.My only option (with my knowledge) was to re-install XP. Luckily, few days before the crash, I backed up All information in this computer” using Windows system tools.
My computer has been acting weird and slow since last couple week, I want to format and install new windows XP pro. But the thing i dont want to lose some softwares and drivers. So what should i do to backup them all and format my computer ? I used to format and install OS but not backing up anything. Now i am worry to losing some important softwares and drivers. My question is there any software or any way to let us backup software + driver to the CD then we can format hdd and install OS like normally?
I want to back up my entire system to an external harddrive and then reinstall windows on the internal one.My question is can I use a program to put programs back on to the internal drive from the external harddrive. I heard ghost copies everything even registry is this true?
i got somethin that is called ''A delayed writing failed''(my translation?) at E: S(with dollar tag over S)mft chkdsk manage to repair and delete the bad filepost-segement so i could acces the drive again. but now the problem is thath around 150 Gb of files has instead got hidden on the drive and can't be directley accesed with windows explorer..the files are recovered by chkdsk and the files works
however I can acces thoose files with Nero Burning Room LOL and R-Studio Data Recovery for example.first i tryed to copy thoose files to another hardrive with R-studio and back to orginal harddrive. the problem is that thoose hidden 150 Gb:s is still left on the drive.so my discspace is insufficient to succed to copy them back
I've looked at it infrequently, and never could understand what I saw, but today there was something relatively new and scary:...Further info under help and support said an error was detected during a paging file operation. The word "disk" scared me, so I checked the entire Event Viewer, and found 25 of these errors, from Aug 1 2005 through Sep 3 2005. If this event was cataloged earlier, I don't know, because the Event Viewer only goes back to Aug 1. I checked System Restore for Aug 1, 2005 and found a couple of things; 1) an accidental MS "update" to NVIDIA GeForce4 MX driver 5.12 -- but we've had the 6.1.7.7 driver for a long time now. The 5.12 screws up the display resolution, big time. I reinstalled the 6.17; resolution is fine; but I'm wondering if this could have something to do with the Event 51 warning. Also, on that same date, something called Software Distribution Service 2.0 is listed three times, and I don't know why. I don't even know what it is. I've researched the web, and can't find anything that seems to apply -- other than potential for a hard drive crash. Just what I don't need. Meanwhile, the entire system is working extremely well; fast and smooth; no glitches or twitches that I can detect
Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?
In winamp, all my songs that are in my music folder all have the same, incorrect album art unless they are in another subfolder with their own album art.I narrowed down the problem to the fact that when I put my documents folder into thumbnail view, the art appears on my music folder, rather than the default my music folder icon.I have looked everywhere in this folder for this image, which was originally on some music my brother was downloading and deleted a long time ago and cannot see a way of restoring it back to normal. This is what it is like in my document and the album art on the my music folder is on every song inside that isn't in a subfolder:gured out why. I had to turn on display system files and delete them manually. I guess I shouldn't have just tried show hidden files
I added a 120 gig Western Digital USB external drive and used Acronis to create a backup of my hard drive. I then used Windows XP to remove it as a USB device so I could power it off. Now, when I power it back on it is not recognized by XP and does not appear on My Computer or on Disk Management (where I originally formatted it for NTFS). All I get is a sound like a single "KERPLONK" when I power it on.
Now however, my hard drive seems to contain approx 13GB of data which I am unable to locate, even when viewing the "hidden files" option. I first noticed this increased used space when I wanted to defragment the hard drive and noticed that there was only 45% free space available (there is usually 75%).I have viewed the properties of all the folders on the C: drive and they do not add up to the 20GB shown on the C: drive properties...The defragment report states that "some files in the volume could not be defragmented"
computer's running a lil bit slow and wont allow me to install my new mobile phone software as c drive memory is full, i've tried my best to move things to the d drive hard disk but its still really full.is there any safe way of transferring most of the programs and files over to the second hard drive?
Just got a new machine and the primary drive is an SATA drive... but I still want to get old files of my old hard drives by hooking them up the the ide connections. Unfortunately, for one drive when I put it in the machine it gives me a missing hal.dll error and when I put the other drive in it gives me a ntrdl missing error. is there any way I can force the machine to boot to my SATA drive when the IDE drive is in there? I suspect it is trying to boot to the old drives when I install them.
I recently upgraded from Vista to XP because of incompatability issues with my hardware and software. Before I upgraded, I backed up all of my files and settings using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I placed the backup files on my external hard drive. Now when I try to restore from the backed up file, which is a SaveData.MIG file, the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard does not recognize it as being a viable file. Also, the file itself it write protected, but when I try to un-protect it, it reverts back to being protected.
Before my hard drive failed some files were copied to a CD-R disk with Roxio CD Creator 5.01 Basic. Attempts to open these files or copy them to a new HD has failed. Some error messages have indicated that the files are "Read Only". Others have suggested trying to open them with the program that created them. (Mostly MS Works spreadsheets and Word).
I have a computer that I need to take all of my existing files off of so that I can erase the HDD. I also have a 150gb external USB HDD. What is the fastest way to transfer all of my files on to my external HDD, and make them so that they are viewable by my other computers. I am running all Dell computers with Windows XP Professional on them.
I noticed lately that the files that are in the attached picture that have the numbers and then _backup just recently showed up on my c: drive and my d: drive. Now they have attached themselves on all my external western digital passport drives drives too.
I cant delete them, they say they are locked. I have also downloaded unlocker 1.8.7 and it wasn't able to delete the files either. I have run system mechanics, prevx malware, kaspersky nitvirus program and didn't find anything wrong. The haven't caused any problems that I know of except I wasn't able to format my d: drive.
