Jan 25, 2007I have three hard drive C, D & E. D & E's icons are fine, but my C drive icon is not the normal icon for a Local Hisk icon.How do i get it back?

Restoring New Hard Drive - Upgrade OS
Jul 1, 2005I have a bad hard drive. I bought a new one and was in the process of re-loading Windows XP onto the new drive. I bought the computer with Windows ME on it and paid for the XP Upgrade. The only CDs I have are the XP Upgrade CD and the Comqaq "Recovery CD".The XP Load is requesting that I put in the old Windows ME CD to verify that I can load the Windows XP Upgrade OS, but I don't have the CD.

My other hard drive will still boot (what I'm writing from) I have a backup of the registry I made in regedit.exe and I download regcool and erunt. Is there a way I can restore me second hard drives registry from another bootable hard drive?

Jul 18, 2006I have a Compaq Presario 2580US Notebook with an operating system Windows XP Home Edition. Previously I installed Windows XP Professional, and then after a few months something happened (I don't know what), and my computer would not operate. I charged up the battery completely and when I went to BIOS Utility to do a self test on the Hard Drive, it said no Hard Drive was detected and there was no IDE. I, then, had a friend look at it, and he pulled out the Hard Drive and noticed two prongs were bent. The prongs were then bent back staright and the drive put in. This still did not fix the problem. It says the command interepreter is missing.

Dec 23, 2007OS is windows XP home. In my computer folder I doubleclick on the (C hard drive, but it doesn't open like a folder but as a search tool. I have to right click and choose open from the menu to "open like a folder".I accidentally was doing something weird in the control panel>folder properties(not sure if its called folder properties in the english xp).And now I would want it again to open like a folder, but I just don't know how.

Jun 2, 2007I needed to reformat my Hard Drive from NTFS to Fat32. But in doing so, I managed to forget to back up my files. By reformatting, I erased everything on my C: drive. Now, since I'm not in Windows and cannot access it, I have no way of doing a System Restore. I don't own any XP Install discs, so that eliminates that option. The only solution I can think of would be to download the necessary files, but I don't know if there is such availability.

Mar 5, 2010I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

Aug 5, 2010My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .

Jan 28, 2008At times Cd drive Icon not visible in My computer. Then I have to restart the system to get it back. I m using Windows 2003 EE SP1 in newly assembled server.
WHile browsing the contents of the CD and if I choose back option it says D: or CD drive is not accessible and I have to restart the system to get it back.
-This is a fresh installation. Please let me know what could be wrong.

And this morning this came up:My hard Disk Icon(The One in My Computer when you open it, showing your computer contents, your hard drive, etc) was replaced by the one that windows shows when it does not recognize a file.When I tried to fix it, it became worse. Now when I double click one of my hard drives it will now not open but goes directly to the search function for that drive.My hard disk icon or whatever it is called, and b.) Double clicking the hard drive will now open it instead of the search function.I wanted to print screen the problem, so that you guys could see it but I don't know where the print screen image is located.

My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

What I actually ended up doing was to reinstall windows xp again and now my pc is back to the day it was made, well almost. None of my other programs are installed but they are still on the "C" drive. Everything is still there.

Oct 18, 2009I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.

If one doesn't already exist, create a new KEY called "DriveIcons". Under this key, create a new key with the letter of your drive. I.e. C for your C: drive. To change the icon for that drive, create a key inside that one called DefaultIcon and set the path of (Default) to the location of your icon eg CDefaultIcon hen (Default) = D:DocumentsC Drive Icon.ico To change the name of that drive, create a key in the drive letter one (eg C) called DefaultLabel and set the (Default) to what you want the drive to be called.This is useful if you want to assign a long name to the floppy drive.
