When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site
View 3 RepliesI had an NTDLR error, so I thought I could make my corrupted hard drive a slave on another computer so I could just get my stuff that way. Unfortunately when Windows XP started, it started checking the newly added slave and it took forever and started doing all this stuff, all I remember seeing is...deleting index entry yatta yatta. I don't know what it did!! But when I got into windows, all that was there what was originally on the root drive (c:/) like unzipped, My Shared Folder, and WINDOWS. NO MY DOCUMENTS, nothing..no way to even get to my user files with my favorites, documents etc. Yet, in the disk information when I right click it says the drive is occupied with the same amount as before - 80 gigs. I tried to defrag too and the files that I can't find otherwise were being defragmented! So how can I access these files? Windows xp recovery said it could not be fixed. I need this stuff, is there any other way to get it!? It's NTFS file format.

I think the HDD I have now is dying, and I would like to have a hard drive I can just pop in which has all the information I have now. I have heard horror stories about Norton Ghost, so I'm hesitant there. I also bought a product called Drivecopy...BEFORE I learned that it is not compatible with XP Pro. Ghost and Drivecopy are both PowerQuest products. I have been told that if you simply copy one drive to another it will not be bootable because of some hidden/missing files that Windows uses. I have also heard that most products which are SUPPOSED to do what I want will only work on drives the exact same size and will duplicate my smaller partition if I go to a larger drive. There MUST be an easy way, but I'm stumped.

Now the bios, device manager, and disk manager recognizes the slave drive but didn't assign it a drive letter. In disk manager it shows as a basic disk, NTFS, Healthy (Active), 18.65 GB,Online. When I right click the volume to assign a drive letter it is grayed out.

Now I find that I should have installed the new SATA hard drive for better perfomance with my new P4 dual layered processor. I have ordered the new SATA 80 GB drive and would expect that when I install the XP on it I will have to call microsoft to activate it on the hard drive (since it was originally installed on the hard drive that I got with the new system). Any issues here or just call and explain the upgrade during the activation? (Understood that I will have to reinstall my other software again) As a follow up to this, would there be any problem slaving the original drive on the same IDE ribbon as the new SATA drive?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

Is it possible that i can plug in my second hard drive as slave (by jumper setting) without turning off my computer, and beable to see and transfer data from my second hard drive to my first hard drive. View 10 Replies View RelatedI am running XP Pro on a rebuilt Dell PIII. The original hard drive is 7G, so I added a 300G slave for storage. My plan now was to change the 300G drive to the Master drive. I reformatted, booted from my XP disc & installed the OS on the "new" 300G drive. Then I switched the jumper & cable so it was in the master position.and nothing.
It starts up, tells me to hit F2 for setup or F1 to continue. When I hit F1, it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, but no command line
I've upgraded my PC from Win98SE to XP, and installed a second HD (as a slave) using an old Samsung SV3002H i had laying about. Bios detects it, and it shows in my device manager, but aside from that, i can't access it to either format it/see it in "my computer."
View 3 Replies View RelatedMultiple computers blue screen on him lately. the 4th BSoD-laden computer, but it's got me and the Sys Admin pretty stumped, so maybe I can find an answer here. The computer is a CSI brand with AMD Athlon XP proc & Windows XP. The problem hdd is a WD 400, and we also have another working WD 400 in another computer that I'll mention later. Both have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and were originally in separate computers (each was the only harddrive in its comp originally.
Trying to start a computer with the problem WD 400 alone results in a blue screen error right after the windows screen (if I remember correctly...it's not long after the hdd, etc is recognized anyways), and gives the STOP error 0x00000024, and mentions some problems with the NTFS. I found that the ..24 STOP error has to do with the NTFS.sys file, but that doesn't help me much. The computer does not let me do anything after this BSoD error, and upon restart, I just get the same error, no matter which Safe/etc mode I try...it doesnt load into any of the modes.
How do I most efficiently and with the least chance of data loss salvage the data from the partitioned hard drive? By using the enclosure or by hooking the drive up to the old box as a slave? And is the remaining OS on C: of the partitioned drive likely to cause any problems

I know, if it ain't broke don't fix it but my board is about 2 years old and the current BIOS revision is fairly stable and comlpete plus I figured if I'm ever going to do a BIOS update I should do it immediately preceeding a clean install Also, supposedly my ASUS board has some feature that will prevent you from being screwed even if you have a bad flash. OS with required serial drivers. not really sure what that involves but in another thread I was told I needed to have the serial drivers ready to go and push F6 when it asks for them at the beginning of the install (I've seen that screen on previous installs but I've never had to mess with it).

But when I boot the machine up. And select the slave drive, none of the files, such as pictures, word docs, etc. are there. The folders are blank. The jumper pin setting is correct because the picture is right on the label for the drive
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am priarily a Mac user, I do grahic & web design etc. I recently bought a cheap older PC to use for validating my work on the Windows platform. The computer came with 98, I need XP on it. I got XP installed (had to change the hard drive ribbon to an 80 wire ribbon) but now when it starts up, it freezes up after a few seconds. Before opening IE or doing anything. The computer has 64 MB RAM, which I would be upgrading if I thought this computer is worth putting any $$ at all into - 64 is supposed to meet the minimum requirements for XP so although I expect it to be molasses slow I do expect it to run the system software. I have it hooked up to a Samsung LCD screen (onboard graphics card - Compaq board) and Windows keyboard and USB mouse.
Also, the computer ran fine under 98 (tested it for a bit when I got it, and previous owner is a friend who swears there were no problems under 98). I don't get blue screen or anything, computer just totally freezes and doesn't respond. When I restart it goes through proper verification and then starts up, freezes again. So, I have no idea wher to start - hardware issue? Software issue?
I made some holiday videos and saved them to DVD. They are about 2.1 gigs each. Now I want to edit them I cant copy them to my hard drive. Loads of room but it just comes up with 49 minutes left and keeps going. If I look at the properties of the file on the harddisk it's the right size as if it's been copied. The problem is that it never seems to finish and if I cancel the file disappears.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

I've been using win 98se in the past and always backed up my drive using the "Drive Copy" software and that always worked just fine. I tried using it to copy my new Win XP drive and found that it has a different format called NTFS. My Drive Copy doesn't seem to work with the new drive. Any suggestions? Do I need to reformat the new blank drive I want to copy to?

Instead of burning as disc images, I just copied and pasted these 4 CDs to my USB HDD as 4 folders called "RecoveryCD 1", "RecoveryCD 2", "RecoveryCD 3" and "RecoveryCD 4". Now my laptop got problem and I lost my 4 recovery CDs. All I have now is 4 recovery folders in my USB HDD. I burned another 4 CDs as data disc from my USB HDD, but it didn't work out (it didn't boot because they are just data discs). I again burned my first recovery CD as a bootable CD, and it booted but didn't automatically install XP, drivers and other softwares. It just appeared some sentences on a black screen and cursor is waiting for me to type after the text, "A:>".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a hard time formating my system. I recently got virus that was so bad i couldn't access my desktop, so i am now formating my hard drive. I go through the process of a clean install and i make the partition I hit quick ntfs and it goes on fine until it restarts the computer. All it does is it either loads up on the cd or it hangs on a - mark on a black background, and later tells me non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. I'm wondering if jumper settings may have something to do with this or if the hard drive is screwed up.

From one moment to the other Windows loses sight of that second drive. Sometimes restarting (in every possible way) helps, sometimes not. Sometimes the drive disappears when I'm saving omething to it, sometimes I can save.

I have this idea however I don't know if you can do it. What i want to do is to make my Hard Disk Drive as my My Music folder: Whenever you click or go into My Music, it will act as a shortcut and head straight to the Hard Disk Drive. The reason for this is so I have a Hard Disk Drive full of music while my original HDD has all the other stuff. Also My Music is a special windows folder so I would like to keep that if possible when doing this.
