Connecting Partitioned Hard Drive As Slave To Save Data

Mar 23, 2008

How do I most efficiently and with the least chance of data loss salvage the data from the partitioned hard drive? By using the enclosure or by hooking the drive up to the old box as a slave? And is the remaining OS on C: of the partitioned drive likely to cause any problems

Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no windows is displaying contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.". This happens all the time.

I reformatted, booted from my XP disc & installed the OS on the "new" 300G drive. Then I switched the jumper & cable so it was in the master position.and nothing.

It starts up, tells me to hit F2 for setup or F1 to continue. When I hit F1, it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, but no command line

C Drive Data Save Before Formating

The harddrive is partitioned into an C: and D: configuration. However, when I try to access the D: drive, a message tells me the drive is not formatted. IT then tells me formatting will erase all data on the drive. My question is this; if I format D:, will I lose the Data already on the C: portion of the drive? I am trying to figure out if I need to backup everything on my C: drive before I format.

STOP 0x00000024 Even When The Hard Drive Is Slave To A Known Working Hdd With XP

Jun 21, 2007

Multiple computers blue screen on him lately. the 4th BSoD-laden computer, but it's got me and the Sys Admin pretty stumped, so maybe I can find an answer here. The computer is a CSI brand with AMD Athlon XP proc & Windows XP. The problem hdd is a WD 400, and we also have another working WD 400 in another computer that I'll mention later. Both have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and were originally in separate computers (each was the only harddrive in its comp originally.

Trying to start a computer with the problem WD 400 alone results in a blue screen error right after the windows screen (if I remember correctly...it's not long after the hdd, etc is recognized anyways), and gives the STOP error 0x00000024, and mentions some problems with the NTFS. I found that the ..24 STOP error has to do with the NTFS.sys file, but that doesn't help me much. The computer does not let me do anything after this BSoD error, and upon restart, I just get the same error, no matter which Safe/etc mode I try...it doesnt load into any of the modes.

NTDLR Disaster - Could Make Corrupted Hard Drive As Slave

Mar 9, 2005

I had an NTDLR error, so I thought I could make my corrupted hard drive a slave on another computer so I could just get my stuff that way. Unfortunately when Windows XP started, it started checking the newly added slave and it took forever and started doing all this stuff, all I remember seeing is...deleting index entry yatta yatta. I don't know what it did!! But when I got into windows, all that was there what was originally on the root drive (c:/) like unzipped, My Shared Folder, and WINDOWS. NO MY DOCUMENTS, nothing..no way to even get to my user files with my favorites, documents etc. Yet, in the disk information when I right click it says the drive is occupied with the same amount as before - 80 gigs. I tried to defrag too and the files that I can't find otherwise were being defragmented! So how can I access these files? Windows xp recovery said it could not be fixed. I need this stuff, is there any other way to get it!? It's NTFS file format.

Corrupt Hard Drive Files: Save The Files And Reformat The Hard Drive?

Oct 18, 2009

I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.

Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.

How Do Change Default Hard Drive When Doing Save As

Mar 24, 2010

It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.

Transferring Data Off A Bad Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2005

I am new to this site and I come here today to ask a question, perhaps someone here will be able to offer a bit of advice.I have a toshiba laptop, running xp pro sp2, 80GB hard drive.Hard drive inoperable due to bad sectors. My hard drive was partitioned into several sections with the C: section containing the os and the D: section containing my data. I could not boot my system so I tried reinstalling os on C: section again, it required a format. I formatted the C: section and then attempted to reinstall os, no luck!Using a third party diagnostic CD I see that my data on the D: partition is still available and intact. The diagnostic disk creates a makeshift os which allows for very limited manipulation of information on hard drive. Since I can not install os onto bad hard drive section C how can I transfer data from the section D: partition to either a new hard drive or to a storage medium?
