The harddrive is partitioned into an C: and D: configuration. However, when I try to access the D: drive, a message tells me the drive is not formatted. IT then tells me formatting will erase all data on the drive. My question is this; if I format D:, will I lose the Data already on the C: portion of the drive? I am trying to figure out if I need to backup everything on my C: drive before I format.
How do I most efficiently and with the least chance of data loss salvage the data from the partitioned hard drive? By using the enclosure or by hooking the drive up to the old box as a slave? And is the remaining OS on C: of the partitioned drive likely to cause any problems
my product activation key doesnt work for my windows so i have no way to log on to windows, so im just going to format the harddrive, but im having truouble with getting to MSDOS to format it. and when i go it says i cant because im running programs on the hard drive,
I am going to format computer so I can do a fresh install of XP. The computer is five years old and it needs it. The XP disc that came with it didn't even have sp1. Can I use a disc that has sp2 on it if I use his original COA? or do I have to use the original, update to sp2 then update with all the patches since 2002.
I'm having a hard time formating my system. I recently got virus that was so bad i couldn't access my desktop, so i am now formating my hard drive. I go through the process of a clean install and i make the partition I hit quick ntfs and it goes on fine until it restarts the computer. All it does is it either loads up on the cd or it hangs on a - mark on a black background, and later tells me non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. I'm wondering if jumper settings may have something to do with this or if the hard drive is screwed up.
I have been getting this error message pop up on the screen about once a day for the last week. its a random times, while doing different things on the pc. usually the error is trying to save temp files.Windows -delayed write failed Windows was unable to save all the data for the file c:$mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computet hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. No changes have been made to the pc, and the only thing new installed was the nfs carbon demo.
How do I save data files to a blank CD? Second question, if the blank CD holds 700mg. can I continue adding files to it (at different times) until the blank CD is filled to capacity? I asked this question a couple of days ago, but I only got one reply, but it did not answer the question I am trying to find out "How do I save data-files to a blank CD. Anyone out there who can help, I sure would appreciate it if you can give me some specific info on how to do it.

Explorer includes some great security features. For this tweak I will talk about enabling the feature to not save encrypted files to disk. This is a valuable feature. When you connect to a site that is encrypted the data sent over the network is encrypted. Your browser has the key to decrypt and display the information. Why give someone a chance to crack the encryption. If you don't allow IE to save it to disk then it is nearly impossible for someone else to be able to get that file and use brute force to crack it.

When I try to save something to disk it comes up with 'The parameter is incorrect', then when I close that one another pops up saying 'You do not have access to folder 'D:' see your administrator for access to this folder'Firstly D: is the removable disk drive and not a folder, secondly as I am the only one who has an 'account/user' then thought I was the administrator!
My computer started deleting files. A DOS window popped up and began systematically deleting programs and files. I was able to stop it by turning off the computer. When I turned on the computer again the random deleting had stopped, but I had lost my music files and my mail files. If this wasn't a virus, what else could cause this to happen?
I have recently added a 160Gb Maxtor 6 P160PO drive in an external hi-speed USB housing connected via a 4 port USB-2 card. I have tried copying large amounts of data (13-20Gb) but after a few minutes, I get "The drive is not ready" and it disappears from My Computer. If I disconnect it and re-connect it, it will reappear. The same happended with a 20Gb drive I swapped in, so it seems that it's not the drive. I have tried a different port to no avail.
It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.
I've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install uninstall restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work. When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.
A while back I had a program or a tweak that enabled me to change/add to the list on the left side of the window that opens when you want to save or save as. So, if I was saving a photo, instead of clicking on My Documents >> My Pictures, I was able to just click on My Pictures, ect. (See Photo) Does anyone know of a tweak/program that would allow me to do this?
I want to format a laptop, but I need the Operating system, I am not sure If I have everything I need to get the Operating system back, is there any way I can purge everything from the PC but leave it ready to go again?

Tomorrow I will be picking up a corrupt fat32 drive containing video files, an incident happened which would have been recorded on the drive, while trying to review the video the the dedicated software reported fat32 corruption, please re-format !I am going to try and mount the drive as a slave on my system if this fails I intend to run spinrite still no go then fsck (XP still has fsck for fat32 - right ?) If all else fails could you guys recommend any (preferably free) software to retrieve files from a corrupt fat 32 drive I have heard there is software that will scan the drive right down at a byte level and retrieve particular types of files ie jpeg or avi identifying them from their byte structure
Had to replace the hard drive in my desktop and installed SP3. No problems yet. Any ideas on how I may be able to pull my files off the old drive? Can't get into it from My Computer although it does show up and shows there is data on the drive.
My hard drive just changed to fat32 for some reason and all the data is gone? Does anyone know what could be wrong, can I get my data back? When I start it up it goes through a check, ive left the check running and its been going ages, im not sure what its doing. Says something about lost clusters and truncated?
I got a 2nd hand lap top from my boss yesterday. Took it home last night and formatted the hard drive, then installed Centos and Linux over it. Got to work this morning to discover that my boss hadn't copied all his files over! I need to recover all his Outlook files.
