Screen Definition Problem with Toshiba Satellite 4600 Laptop. I am wondering if someone can give me advice regarding my toshiba satellite 4600 laptop. I am running XP service pack 2 and the machine is around 6 years old, has a 733mhz celeron processor, 256mb ram and 30gig HD.
The problem is that it doesn't seem to want to change screen definition (which is necessary for a lot of games). In the display properties settings there is choice of either 800x600 or 1024x768, however it defaults to 1024x768, and if you change it to 800x600 all that happens is that the desktop gets smaller within the monitor's screen leaving a black border around the unused part of the screen (it's like when you resize a photo, the photo gets smaller) - the icons stay tiny, so really it's still 1024x768 but just a smaller version............
Can I totally remove a file association so that type of file once again has no association set? I set some dat files to open with WMP which was fine for my purposes then but later changed them to mpeg files and so don't need to keep that dat file association anymore. I want to get the dat files back to having no particular program assigned to open them. All I can do now is change it to other programs which isn't what I want. Any way to start with a clean slate again? (I guess I could change the dat icon so I can tell what they are if there's not a way to unassociate them.) Dat files have always kind of spooked me, I want to be sure people don't click them thinking they'll play a vcd.
On my pc, I had one drive with Windows 98 on it, and one drive with Windows XP on it Windows 98 was on drive C: XP was on D: They were set up so I could choose which one to boot to at start up I wanted to get rid of the 98 entirely, so I edited the boot ini, just removing the entry for windows 98 after restarting the computer, everything was fine....going directly to XP so I wanted to format the 98 drive so I could use it as additional storage, which I did using norton partition magic, I then shut down my computer......turned it back on.....and I get an error saying: NTLDR is missing.

My Problem: My modem can not be detected. I was attempting to load AOL 9.0 optimized on my laptop and it could not detect my modem. I tried using Windows' Modem and Internet Connection and could not Detect my modem. I installed the recommended driver from IBM and Lenovo from the MDCB3C2k, thinking my modem is a 3COM modem(I have no idea what kinda modem I have. Either 3COM or Xicro, I don't know how to tell), I installed the driver and it did nothing my modem is still undetected.note: I have used Belarc Advisor, and could not get a result for my Modem Model under Communication Devices.
My question is simple, is there a way to pick some of the files on the computer (40GB of them) and somehow back them up on the hard drive, and the format everything else.I'm using Win XP. If it helps I also have Nero 8 with Back it up but I'm not sure if that's the answer.

I am having trouble installing windows xp pro for a new computer. I have two WD Caviar SE16 250 GB HDD set up in a RAID 0 array. I set up the BIOS and installed the drivers and everything seemed normal. I partitioned all the disc space as one partition and chose to format using NTFS. But when formatting begins, it takes about 15 minutes to format the first 40% but it has been almost two days now and has only formatted 65%. Is this normal? I tried restarting my computer and redoing the whole process and the same thing happens.

I am running Windows XP Professional and have been having problems for several weeks now. I got the dreaded blue screen... was on the phone with Microsoft tecs for 3 hrs one day and then 5 hrs another and they thought that they had it taken care of. They didn't do a total replace, just a repair so that I could backup some information I hadn't backed up yet. I was able to run windows XP Professional again but the tec told me that I needed to do all the updates. As soon as I updated to SP2 I got the blue screen again. I did a repair with my cd and was able to get Windows XP Professional back up. As soon as I installed the updates and updated to SP2 and restarted I got the blue screen again. I decided to format and reinstall instead of repair. I followed the instructions and it is now stuck on the screen where it says setup is formatting... 0%. What should I do next?
After lots of installs, uninstalls, and other acquired crap after quite a few years of use, I'm planning on reformatting my computer (specs are in profile).I have a few simple questions which I hope you can answer. First, I have a single hard-drive that is split in two partitions: C: and D:. The D: has always been locked down as a "recovery" drive. Can I just reformat my computer from the D:?If not, a few years ago, I made a set of recovery disks using the recovery creator. I am unsure on this, but when I made the recovery disks, will it restore my computer to the point when I created them (hope not), or will it completely reformat everything (what I'm hoping for).I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications.Lastly, can I upgrade straight from SP1 to SP3? Or do you recommend that I use something like Project Dakota (or RyanVM) to bring me up to spiff with SP2, then make the final jump to SP3?
I am going to format computer so I can do a fresh install of XP. The computer is five years old and it needs it. The XP disc that came with it didn't even have sp1. Can I use a disc that has sp2 on it if I use his original COA? or do I have to use the original, update to sp2 then update with all the patches since 2002.
The harddrive is partitioned into an C: and D: configuration. However, when I try to access the D: drive, a message tells me the drive is not formatted. IT then tells me formatting will erase all data on the drive. My question is this; if I format D:, will I lose the Data already on the C: portion of the drive? I am trying to figure out if I need to backup everything on my C: drive before I format.
i just got my new computer and put it all tougther and went to formatt the hard drive and it wont formatt it just stops about 50% when u get to the formatting part and the screen gets lines throught it and turns all kinds of colors. i have a amd a64 x2 5000+ black eddtion, asus m2a-vm motherbord, with Hard Disk 160g sata.
I'm having a hard time formating my system. I recently got virus that was so bad i couldn't access my desktop, so i am now formating my hard drive. I go through the process of a clean install and i make the partition I hit quick ntfs and it goes on fine until it restarts the computer. All it does is it either loads up on the cd or it hangs on a - mark on a black background, and later tells me non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. I'm wondering if jumper settings may have something to do with this or if the hard drive is screwed up.
At the mo my Win XP 120 GB drive has about 26 GB left but i have a second hard drive in my PC ( which i only connect when i wanna do some thing in Win98) which is a 70 GB drive so im thinking of using that as a second drive for my PC , i have alwas been used to formatting W98 drives etc , ie using FDISK etc but im new to doing hard drive replacments / Hard Drive add ons in XP , so my question is whats the best way to add a second hard drive to XP ? i have been told i can format the drive etc while Win XP is booted up
