View 7 RepliesMy question is simple, is there a way to pick some of the files on the computer (40GB of them) and somehow back them up on the hard drive, and the format everything else.I'm using Win XP. If it helps I also have Nero 8 with Back it up but I'm not sure if that's the answer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know what to do but i am bit curious on the formatting bit. I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive
View 2 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up

I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:
View 14 Replies View Relatedabout two yrs ago my dad made a massive mistake of making two partitions on my laptop, and giving the C: only 2gigs of the partition, and the D: 28-29gigs. I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. I have the formatting disks, but it never goes to a screen asking me about my partitions, it just formats everything on my C: (my default drive), but keeps everything on my D: intact (games, files, etc.).
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.

I set up the BIOS and installed the drivers and everything seemed normal. I partitioned all the disc space as one partition and chose to format using NTFS. But when formatting begins, it takes about 15 minutes to format the first 40% but it has been almost two days now and has only formatted 65%. Is this normal? I tried restarting my computer and redoing the whole process and the same thing happens.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Professional and have been having problems for several weeks now. I got the dreaded blue screen... was on the phone with Microsoft tecs for 3 hrs one day and then 5 hrs another and they thought that they had it taken care of. They didn't do a total replace, just a repair so that I could backup some information I hadn't backed up yet. I was able to run windows XP Professional again but the tec told me that I needed to do all the updates. As soon as I updated to SP2 I got the blue screen again.
I did a repair with my cd and was able to get Windows XP Professional back up. As soon as I installed the updates and updated to SP2 and restarted I got the blue screen again.
I decided to format and reinstall instead of repair. I followed the instructions and it is now stuck on the screen where it says setup is formatting... 0%. What should I do next?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter lots of installs, uninstalls, and other acquired crap after quite a few years of use, I'm planning on reformatting my computer (specs are in profile).I have a few simple questions which I hope you can answer. First, I have a single hard-drive that is split in two partitions: C: and D:. The D: has always been locked down as a "recovery" drive. Can I just reformat my computer from the D:?If not, a few years ago, I made a set of recovery disks using the recovery creator. I am unsure on this, but when I made the recovery disks, will it restore my computer to the point when I created them (hope not), or will it completely reformat everything (what I'm hoping for).I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications.Lastly, can I upgrade straight from SP1 to SP3? Or do you recommend that I use something like Project Dakota (or RyanVM) to bring me up to spiff with SP2, then make the final jump to SP3?

IT then tells me formatting will erase all data on the drive. My question is this; if I format D:, will I lose the Data already on the C: portion of the drive? I am trying to figure out if I need to backup everything on my C: drive before I format.

I go through the process of a clean install and i make the partition I hit quick ntfs and it goes on fine until it restarts the computer. All it does is it either loads up on the cd or it hangs on a - mark on a black background, and later tells me non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. I'm wondering if jumper settings may have something to do with this or if the hard drive is screwed up.

Set a sub woofer with no magnetic shielding right next to my computer tower for about 10 hours or so. I mean you can see the sub woofer effect the monitor when your holding it from about 8 inches away, so should I be worried about my hard drive? View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running windows xp pro with all updates on a intel III 1000 processer with 2 250gb hds. my ISP runs an antivirus and I run Norton antivirus and Spy Sweeper. Late yesterday windows did an automatic update and I installed them. This morning I cannot boot on the hd with the updates. I reach the window that displays system info in b/w. At the bottom of this screen are two sets of two symbols a Y followed by an infinity symbol. On this hd I do not reach the point of going to safe mode. I booted on the second drive but it is not up to date (luckily?). I cannot determine how to remove the updates from the first drive. I tried System Recovery, I get a message that it is corrupt and do I want to send a message to Microsoft.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm getting extremely frustrated with a problem I keep encountering trying to install a new SATA Hard Drive. I connect the SATA HD power & data cable I prepare a FDD with the necessary HD Cotroller Drivers from the motherboard utilities CD I boot the PC I insert my XP Pro (SP2) CD The PC boots from the CD I press F6 when prompted for 3rd party drivers When prompted, I install the necessary drivers from the FDD I then get to the bit where I chose to install Windows rather than do a Repair - when I select install, I'm told that no HD is present & that I need to exit by pressing F3 I've tried removing RAM to see if any is dodgy but still encounter the same problem.
I've attached the new SATA HD to a different PC & everything moves on perfectly but I quit before formatting the drive as I want to do a clean install on the other PC. I'm beginning to think that there might be a problem with the Motherboard but am open to suggestions (the old HD is stuck in an infitinte boot loop & am unable to slave it to another HD as it wont respond - maybe caused by a Motherboard problem?).
