I have been running Windows 7 RC beta on a new 1tb harddrive and installed XP Pro on a partition in the D:drive. When I rebooted all that I could get to reboot was the new install of XP Pro. Is there a way to select which system I can reboot from or toggle between them? Hope you can help? Thank you. I am running a Pentium 4, 2 gb ram, 1 tb harddrive.

I have started to experience problems this started out being aload whinning noise that i have determined is either the hardrive or the a fan on the graphics card. I am worried that the harddrive is shot. The computer has started to tell me that there is a error speciffically "attribute seek error changes 100 to 200" so something is going on with the harddrive. I moved a couple of months back and am worried that the hardrive did not travel well. Also I have put in a new graphics card and wonder is it is producing much more heat. My sytem seems to be more and more unstable. I downloaded a trail versionof system mechanic and have used that to try and help but with little success. Every so often the computer would upon starting say that it had to check the Harddrive for systems intergity.
WinXP Pro sp3, IE 7 (Quick launch) Show desktop stopped toggling so I deleted the icon and recreated it. I've followed all the instructions: in administrator, used notepad, carefully followed shell instructions, hit enter after each line including last, saved as (all files) Show Desktop.scf to proper folder. Result = proper icon on taskbar that doesn't react to clicking. Also tried deleting icon and using Microsoft's (we'll do it for you) app and got same result.

I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive
View 2 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up

I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:
View 14 Replies View Relatedabout two yrs ago my dad made a massive mistake of making two partitions on my laptop, and giving the C: only 2gigs of the partition, and the D: 28-29gigs. I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. I have the formatting disks, but it never goes to a screen asking me about my partitions, it just formats everything on my C: (my default drive), but keeps everything on my D: intact (games, files, etc.).
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to perform a clean install on a older dell poweredge running Win 2000 server that i aquired a while back. What i would like to do is create a Acronis True Image of the current install and throw it on an external HD. (i want to keep the current install usable for a few weeks) Then wipe the disk and do a clean install of the OS and start fresh till i get everything running the way i like it. And also create a image of this new install and throw it on the external HD as well.
But during this span of a few weeks i would need to restore to the original install and go back to the fresh install quite a few times probalby....err toggle between the original and new install until all is well. (carry on with the fresh install when no one is in the office, when done for the night restore back to original install untill the next night i can continue with my work and toggle to the new install again and again and again.
I have always been able to put a check mark in toggle keys, hit apply and ok then I would have sound if I accidentally hit the caps lock button. I cannot get this function to hold the check mark and work period, what could be causing this?

I can't narrow focus to particular windows but I need a way to quickly remove and restore the desktop icons. I know about right-clicking the Desktop, Properties, Arrange Icons By, Show Desktop Icons. But this involves too many mouse clicks. It's OK for doing this every once in a while but I do lots of those in the course of the day. any way or tool to assign this to an unused hotkey on my keyboard?

I had to reinstall Windows XP Home on it, and I am now plagued with a NON-functioning wireless toggle on the front, and the blue light stays lit all the time. The wireless function seems to work fine. I have installed all drivers, and have also installed the HP One Touch application as directed by a HP Tech to no avail. The mute button works fine, and all other aspects of the laptop work fine other than the Wireless Toggle Switch and the Blue Wireless Status light. All worked fine before I reinstalled XP Home with a retail install disk.

I go through control panel and the accessibility options then put a check mark in toggle keys hit apply and ok, the check mark disappears and I have no sound when I hit the cap lock button on the keyboard, the way I have used it before.I also click on the sound tab and put a check in the use sound sentry check box so it will flash the screen when I accidentally hit the cap lock button. I've never had a problem with these functions before now nothing will stay checked or function at all.

Then I put the cd in a second time and my computer was reformatted and installed windows a second time. So when i start up my computer it gives me a choice to start one of two operating systems of windows xp. Any ideas on how i can get rid one version without reformatting again. I then found xp and installed it as a complete install not an upgrade. It is xp pro. Now when I start the computer it goes to a black screen asking which operating system I want to use XP or 2000. 5 comps in total.
All running XP Pro.
They all connect to the network and internet through a net gear router. My net gear router has only 4 ports so i connected a netgear switch to one of the ports to extend it and allow another 2 connections.
One of the computers would run a server application software, and the other computers would run the client application which would connect to the server thru the LAN.
All was working fine, with no issues at all.
The problem:
Recently we upgraded all of our computers to DELL. Optiplex 740's.
Specs are nothing special:

Memory : 1024MB (2x512MB) 667Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel NON-ECC
Hard Drive : 160GB (7200Rpm) Serial ATAII 3Gb/s
All running Windows XP PRO – Some have been updated fully, others no updates at all.
one of my client application stopped responding and was hanging.
How Do I Know if i can install 32 bit or 64 bit operating system in my laptop ?

I do on the other hand have a Win2K prof. disk that i would like to install on this comp so that it can be used again. I was wondering if someone might be able to either tell me or point me in the right direction of getting this machine re-installed with the win2k op sys. i.e tutorials etc. I also do not have the bios install disk so the bios will need to remain the way it is.

Windows 2000 is currently causing problems in that mouse movement is delayed, and also the shutdown process is lengthy, followed by a blank blue screen, sometimes not shutting down at all.As I would prefer to make a clean install of XP Pro it would be great to get rid of the former operating systems. Well she spent 6 hours on the phone with dell and all they did was a half assed restore which allowed her to keep her files but everything else barely worked. She brought it to me and I formatted the drive in xp setup and reinstalled xp pro. The computer runs great but when it boots up it asks me which operating sytem I want to run; the old xp home or the new xp pro. Then when you select the xp pro it boots up but that white line goes by real slow and it takes a minute or so to boot. Once it is booted it runs like a champ but how do I get rid of the old xp pro. I don't get it since I formatted the drive and removed the old partitions.
