My computer started deleting files. A DOS window popped up and began systematically deleting programs and files. I was able to stop it by turning off the computer. When I turned on the computer again the random deleting had stopped, but I had lost my music files and my mail files. If this wasn't a virus, what else could cause this to happen?
View 2 RepliesI am losing only picture and video files my computer. I save a file off the internet it usually lasts a few days on my hard drive and then disappears. I have used windows 98 and currently use 2000 and have the same problem. I have tried an external hard drive and saved the file and then disconnected the USB cable and the same thing happens next time i connect it. I have formatted hard drive a couple of times and problem reoccurred both times.

When I tried to restart it, I got the error window that explains something went wrong, and offers to start it in normal mode or safe mode. I select normal mode, it'll show the loading screen, then shut itself off. Rinse, repeat, same result. This laptop is about 3 1/2 years old.

Mcafee anti-virus did an auto-update, and right after that, windows lost all of it's file associations. I'm sure I can give more information upon request, and I look forward to working this out and maybe learning something.

I deleted three seasons has about 4 gigs each. I only deleted one movie which was 1 gig. So why does it do this. When I tell it to delete it it immediately disappears so why does it go so slow and freeze?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install uninstall restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to figure out this problem that I have with Windows XP but to no success. My computer has been disconnected for about 3 months. And i've recently moved into another place and hooked up my computer. But my problem now is when I download new programs onto my computer, it does not save onto my computer. When I turn off my computer and turn it back on, the program I just installed is not there no more. Same thing when I add media files to my Windows Media library, it stays on there till the computer shuts down. And when I turn the computer back on, I have to load the files on the library again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP, and I've been having trouble with my Recycle Bin lately. Whenever I delete something some time later my recycle bin empties. Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove Files immediately when deleted is unchecked, and the maximum size of Recycle Bin is at 18%. I moved it to 100 to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I couldn't remember what it was at before, so I just put it to 18. Would anyone know what my problem is?

View 4 Replies View RelatedComputer is messed up. She has no idea what happened and called me over to take a look at it. So i went over and I started the computer and it goes to the first start screen where it says this at the bottom "Press [TAB] to show post screen; Press [ALT] + [F2] to enter AWDFlash Utility" Then it pauses there like it is actually going to fully start up but then the computer restarts and it goes through that all over again. I put in their Windows XP CD and ran the recovery program and it came up saying that it started and then it says type EXIT to exit the recovery utility. She says that when it first started doing this something came up saying "Deleting Orphan Record Files" then it listed a whole bunch of files and said "Deleted" beside it.. the list was kinda like what you get when you run a virus scan and it list all the files.. but it listed approx. 5,000,000 files. I find that a little hard to belive but she claims it happened. Is there away to fix this and get her back up and going or will I have to install a NEW/FRESH copy of Xp and like reformat the HD.

IT then tells me formatting will erase all data on the drive. My question is this; if I format D:, will I lose the Data already on the C: portion of the drive? I have a download accelerator called DAP. DAP has an option to send a file that you downloaded to the Recycle Bin. I used that today and then emptied the Recycle Bin.
