The problem I'm having has changed over the past week, and every time I thought I was getting closer to being fixed, it got worse. Mcafee anti-virus did an auto-update, and right after that, windows lost all of it's file associations. I'm sure I can give more information upon request, and I look forward to working this out and maybe learning something.
View 5 RepliesI am losing only picture and video files my computer. I save a file off the internet it usually lasts a few days on my hard drive and then disappears. I have used windows 98 and currently use 2000 and have the same problem. I have tried an external hard drive and saved the file and then disconnected the USB cable and the same thing happens next time i connect it. I have formatted hard drive a couple of times and problem reoccurred both times.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn Friday, I allowed the computer to install a number of security upgrades as well as a malicious software removal tool from MS. Since that reboot, the following things have happened: Got warning about failure of write back cache Blue screen about kernel that MS reported was due to bad HD. Finally able to boot into safe mode and found no HD errors. Thought registry corrupted, so tried to redo with a reload on top of the XP Pro but the program said it is older than that on computer (probably SP2) and won't let me reload.

So I've been randomly disconnecting when playing games like WoW, and CoH & losing connection on the internet as well. It can't be the router I assume since the laptop upstairs which connects to the same thing never disconnects. I have a D-Link router and a D-link gaming router which connects to the PC. Any help?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe problem is the computer keeps losing its video display. Just went black. I reinstall the drivers and restart and the computer runs fine. Use fine, then after its been on for awhile it goes black again. Weird. I have the newest drivers and all the windows updates loaded. It just keeps going out. I have tried several screens as well to rule out the monitor freaking out.

Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove Files immediately when deleted is unchecked, and the maximum size of Recycle Bin is at 18%. I moved it to 100 to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I couldn't remember what it was at before, so I just put it to 18. Would anyone know what my problem is?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently added a 160Gb Maxtor 6 P160PO drive in an external hi-speed USB housing connected via a 4 port USB-2 card. I have tried copying large amounts of data (13-20Gb) but after a few minutes, I get "The drive is not ready" and it disappears from My Computer. If I disconnect it and re-connect it, it will reappear. The same happended with a 20Gb drive I swapped in, so it seems that it's not the drive. I have tried a different port to no avail.

When I tried to restart it, I got the error window that explains something went wrong, and offers to start it in normal mode or safe mode. I select normal mode, it'll show the loading screen, then shut itself off. Rinse, repeat, same result. This laptop is about 3 1/2 years old.

Device manager says all working fine. Soundman.exe checked in start menu, but no icon in tray. Oddly, on shutdown the sound will return and play the log-off sound. Any ideas?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo i was trying to make some room on y C drive and i guess i deleted some files that i shouldn't To make a long story short now my volume control thingy that stays on my taskbar has dissapeared.When i go to the control panel and to sounds and audio devices and i get in there and there is an icon with the option to place volume icon on the taskbar but when i click on that i get 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. After several tries i figured i deleted the windows file soundvol32.exe but how the hell do i get it back and put it in its right place?I have no idea where it would go? I tried using my windows cd but since i put service pack 2 on it it said that the version of windows i had on the cd was older than my current version.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has recently bought a new computer with Windows XP Home. Her old computer is a Window 98. She wants to transfer some files from her old one to the new one. I know that the Windows XP has a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, but though I've done a search for that on the Microsoft site, I've not found any real information about the process. It does mention how to use floppies or other removable storage, but can this be done with USB cable, or something? If so, how would I hook it up? Will I see an option to choose to use a USB cable for the transfer in the Wizard? From the information I found, it does not even mention using a USB, but I find it hard to believe that one could NOT.

When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. II have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, nothing useful.

I have reinstalled my system, both destructive and Partial, a number of times and still haven't got rid of them. Yesterday (11/19/07), after my last reload, my username and Administrator access rights were suddenly changed from the Owner/Administrator to just someone who has limited access. I don't know what my user name is because there isn't a Welcome screen.I haven't been able to find them under "Users" in the Control Panal. Unfortunately, the Control Panal itself disappeared as of last night.

I tried every option such as booting to safe mode, last good configuration...etc to get windows to boot but no luck...once I get the windows xp logo it changes to blue death screen.I purchased a laptop hard drive enclosure and pluged the laptop hard drive into it. Next I attached the hard drive enclosure via USB to my desktop but good not read the data on the hard drive. The laptop has a Recovery Partition and Operating System Partition. I am able to both partitions as drive letter "f" and "g" for example, with drive "f" being the Recovery partition and drive "g" the operating system. When I click on the drive "g" the system locks up and I have to unplug the hard drive enclosure and start over again with no luck.
