I got my PC from someone with Windows XP already installed, now there is a pop up which says that my copy of Windows is not genuine. I am a student and have gotten a Windows XP Professional with SP2 (Single User) ISO Image which allows me install a copy on my PC. I would like to reinstall with this new product without losing all my data and software

OK, so I've put up with all the "non-genuine" reminders from Redmond figuring it was my penance, but now I'm thinking I should move on up to Vista (mainly for Media Center). And yes, the hardware is up to it.
Meanwhile, I had installed a genuine copy of XP on my previous computer before receiving this one (I still have the disks). One install, one machine. So, can I just install that genuine XP over the non-genuine one?
I have Windows XP X64, and I absolutely hate it. I want to downgrade to x86 (32-bit) so that I can run my stuff properly. Is there any way I can uninstall Windows XP X64 without losing my data, so that I can install XP x86 without any issues?

I have used windows 98 and currently use 2000 and have the same problem. I have tried an external hard drive and saved the file and then disconnected the USB cable and the same thing happens next time i connect it. I have formatted hard drive a couple of times and problem reoccurred both times.

I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
Last year I had work done on my laptop and the shop replaced my old Windows 98 with Windows XP. Now I am told by MS my XP is not genuine and no updates can be sent to me. I get a message every 10 minutes asking if i want to "get genuine" or "resolve later". If I click get genuine, will I be charged a fee for a new XP? What should I do?

Mcafee anti-virus did an auto-update, and right after that, windows lost all of it's file associations. I have tried copying large amounts of data (13-20Gb) but after a few minutes, I get "The drive is not ready" and it disappears from My Computer. If I disconnect it and re-connect it, it will reappear. The same happended with a 20Gb drive I swapped in, so it seems that it's not the drive. I have tried a different port to no avail.

View 6 Replies View RelatedToday I copied a large folder containing multiple Access databases, Excel workbooks, Word docs, etc. to a totally blank jump drive like I have done 100s of times before. But for the first time in my 'computer life', which started in 1980(!), a file appeared on it with the name EA DATA.SF. Googling the file told me that it was a system file and had something to do with Extended Attributes (whatever that is). But the file is protected; attempts to delete it, even using the command prompt and first removing all attributes (attrib -h -s -r ea*.sf) does not allow it to be deleted.
The Google search showed many cases like this, but none where there was a clear, easy way to delete the file. My questions are:What is this file for/what does it do? Why am I seeing it for the first time in 30 years? How can I delete it. or SHOULD I delete it?
I have a laptop with a partitioned HD. All of the data (operating sytem, documents, etc...) are on the small partition, and now I'm out of space. What's the easiest way to:
1. transfer everything on the smaller partition (operating sys included) to the larger partition and boot from there - OR -
2. make an exact copy of the smaller partition, reformat the drive without a partition, and replace the data. I'm running Windows XP Professional.
I recent had to install a new disk drive on my computer (Dell) and had problems installing Windows XP from their support CD so I used an illegal copy instead. Now I've been identified as having a non-genuine operating system and need desperately to get my legal copy installed. Do I use the Dell provided system CD and act as tho' I was repairing Windows? It was either during ZoneAlarm or ATI's display drivers (from the CD, until I could download the latest off the site). After that things have been a bit unstable. I managed to uninstall ZoneAlarm. I turned off auto-rebooting and tried launching GAIM as it was affected by the ... mess. gaim.dll wouldn't launch, and I got the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen. I scanned with NOD32 and I didn't find any viruses, but everything inside driver.cab is, well, see for yourself.

I'm having this problem with windows xp pro fresh install onto sata HD. Pressed F6 and installed sata drivers for the mobo etc. Now i hasten to add that i have tried this 3 times now, set up runs smoothly windows installs however when i have finished windows will only boot up with the CD in the CDROM. Been into Bios and changed boot sequence but still if no CD it just gets to boot from cd in the boot up screen and> stops, put the disk in and windows boots straight up and away we go.
