I've always downloaded the "Windows Update" that pops up on the task bar, and it suspects that I'm using a non-genuine copy of windows. Can this be because I share the same copy of Windows with a couple other different people? Anyhow, my main point is, how do I uninstall those updates that I've installed so this "you may be a victim of a counterfeit copy of Windows" which appears at startup.I was going to try system restore, but if someone had a better solution, it'll be great.
I downloaded the new Windows Media Player 11 on my computer and installed it, when the "first time setup" thing asked me to chose my settings, i did, but then it told me that the program couldn't run because I'm not using a genuine copy of windows. so now i want to go back to using WMP 10, but when I run the installation for 10, it sais it cant be done because i already have a newer version installed.
Last year I had work done on my laptop and the shop replaced my old Windows 98 with Windows XP. Now I am told by MS my XP is not genuine and no updates can be sent to me. I get a message every 10 minutes asking if i want to "get genuine" or "resolve later". If I click get genuine, will I be charged a fee for a new XP? What should I do?
Trying to start my desktop but keep getting the message that says 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot device in selected boot device' The trouble is floppy disk is the only boot device selected and i do not have it.
I got my PC from someone with Windows XP already installed, now there is a pop up which says that my copy of Windows is not genuine. I am a student and have gotten a Windows XP Professional with SP2 (Single User) ISO Image which allows me install a copy on my PC. I've purchased new HP notebook with preinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2. When today I tried to update my copy of Windows using Microsoft update service the Genuine Windows Validation program told me I'm using an illegal version of MS Windows, I've tried to reactivate my copy of OS by changing registry key and running But when I entered the OEM license number (as per HP OEM sticker) and attempted to activate, I was politely informed that the key number was mistyped (message number 45128) and invalid, yet the activation works when I'm not change serial key, The guys from HP customer support say it is Microsoft's problem.
Hypothetically,if I have an'illegal'copy of XP Pro which fails Windows Genuine Advantage verification and then buy a legal copy,do I have to do a complete re-install or can I just type the 'kosher' number in somewhere?
A friend bought this computer at a yard sale for me. It did not come with any software, so the OS Windows XP SP1 was already installed on it. When I got on the Internet I went to Microsoft download.com and proceeded to do some of there many free updates. Then I wanted to upgrade to XP SP2or3 and it asked me to validate my OS. So I did and it came back with the message "This copy did not pass genuine validation" I've had one sugestion that was to go to Linux or Ubanta.
Odd windows genuine validation message The scan of your computer has completed. The Windows product key associated with your copy of Windows maps to one of the major PC manufacturers who purchase Windows product keys from Microsoft. The specific product key found on your computer maps to a major PC manufacturer that sells different hardware than the hardware found on your machine. This will not prevent you from validating now, but may cause you problems in the future. Please click Continue to complete the validation process.] I have change the hardware on the machine for your info. Should I change my key on the back of the machine?

I have a computer that I bought from Dell about one year ago. Tonight, an icon in the taskbar tells me that there are some updates ready to be installed. I click on it to have in installed and after a while the installation freezes. I tried to restart the PC... but could not do it. I had to cut off the power to shut it down. When I rebooted, I received a notice saying that my operating system was not genuine and that I would no longer be able to receive updates. I am one hundred percent certain that my operating system is genuine... but, what should I do now?
I'm using a computer that was built by a friend (really, I promise) who installed non-genuine XP in it. I've never been a fan of pirated software, but the computer was free, so what's a boy to do?
OK, so I've put up with all the "non-genuine" reminders from Redmond figuring it was my penance, but now I'm thinking I should move on up to Vista (mainly for Media Center). And yes, the hardware is up to it.
Meanwhile, I had installed a genuine copy of XP on my previous computer before receiving this one (I still have the disks). One install, one machine. So, can I just install that genuine XP over the non-genuine one?
I am running on a non genuine copy of Xp professional and would like to know if I install a genuine copy of Windows 98 will I then be able to take advantage of Microsoft .com upgrades ? Like could I upgrade to XP ?
I need the maximum CPU usage and memory space for 3d rendering. After I installed "windows genuine advantage notification" it became slow and with long rendering process +5 h. it crushes. So I looked at "add/remove programs" list, but it wasnt there.
I have a new Dell XPSl notebook. When I go to the MS download site for an ugrade or new download I am asked to validate my windows software. My Windows XP Media software is genuine and came pre-loaded from Dell. It will not validate. The Active X controls work in all other circumstances but not for validating Windows. I have tried resetting my Security settings but nothing works. I have tried removing my virus protection and all spyware apps but still no success. I have turned off pop up blocker and phishing filters also.
I recently got hijacked real bad. I cleaned most of it out of the pc. But i am still getting that message and I can't use internet explorer. When I try to boot my computer it says:"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file." I tried to boot my computer with the OS cd and got nothing.
After thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.
I have put another copy of XP onto my D: drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C: drive which is a lot of bother. I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.
I get an copy error, when trying to install windows components from control panel add/remove windows components. I have the right win xp sp2 cd in running and it says it cant find a specific file its looking for, but then when i click browse i see that its there in the cd the exact file i double click it and it doesn't recognize it or something again what can i do about this?
I have a desktop and a laptop but decided I needed to reinstall windows on the desktop. I backed up everything and started the re-boot. I deleted the partition and installed a fresh copy of windows. The first thing I noticed while it was installing was that it said it could not copy the files: presetup.cmd & setupORG. I skipped these and continued the installation but once the setup restarted my PC it hits an error screen saying that because these files were not copied setup has to abort.
Just wiped my hard drive clean and am trying to reinstall OS but get a Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. When i add the cd it just repeats Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. Have wiped my hard drive before and haven't had this problem. The boot order is correct in the BIOS and i havent touched any cables.
I've had XP installed 9 months and working great. Yesterday while looking at EBAY, the screen went black, and the computer locked up.Thru trials, I ended up reformating the HD and starting from scratch. XP starts the installation and at 37 minutes left to install, everything freezes. I have to restart and XP installation begins again at about 47 minutes left to install, then at 37 minutes left to finish, the system locks again, and again, again, and again, at 37 minutes to finish.
computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!
